You should write that on beautiful parchment in nice calligraphy and send it to your mother.

You ran out of insults, plexi. You need to fight more pirates before hitting the Swordmaster.

MeTa post: Enough Ebert
serazin...

I don't what to say...

The man's not just a fixture, he's THE movie reviewer. Being young, I never remember a time when he wasn't around, and reading his collected work more or less introduced me to movies as art. Mefi, collectively, has just been giving the man his due.

There are always other reviewers. But as for me, make mine Ebert.

But I was too afraid to pipe up and voice my opinion in that thread for fear of getting my ass handed to me. I guess it's not too late though, I'm going to be tarred and feathered now. *barricades himself in the storm cellar*

I'm in there with you. Two words: Short People. I get it. I get the ironic humor. But I've met people who take the song at face value, and it's understandable why. I didn't find it terribly incisive, and it's hardly funny haha... [more]

MeTa post: Mefi Made Me See The Light!
Reading Mefi has gradually made me more authoritarian...in a good way. I've seen how a benevolent dictatorship (triumvirate?) can work in practice, and gradually less sympathetic to libertarianism after being exposed to more in-depth discussion and background here. (Before I joined Mefi, I might've considered myself libertarian-leaning, but now I'm sure that was more a misunderstanding of terms than anything else.)

MeTa post: Learning to resist the dismiss
This is not just about Australia either - if you are wondering why there are fewer posts recently about China or Korea for example it's due to the same dismissing attitude.

Wait a second. Back up. Is there really anyone else feeling this way? Even you, gomichild, did you think "well, here's something great that's also Austrailian, but I'm not posting it: it won't be worth the anti-Australia bias."?

Would another MeFite like to enlighten me as to who markkraft is? This seems to combine the worst sort of net-based surveillance nightmare (...make some determinations as to the nature of the security around the house...) with the cloudiest of motivations. I think something is wrong here.

Okay. So then your answers are:

1. It's not because of live preview.

2. It's not redundant, because it helps make sure this displays correctly.

I think, among other differences, that Scientology is not a faith, per se. Its leaders and founder wouldn't have kept it alive if they didn't make money. You can find parallels with the worldly Renaissance church, or to the modern televangelists, but that certainly wasn't the whole point, as I gather from Operation Clambake.

MeTa post: Raising the level?
SCDB, I'm surprised you'd treat "The Left" as a monolith when you know full well both left and right are differentiated many different ways. There's a libertarian streak here that informs many people's views on both sides, for instance. I'd call myself a liberal, but I certainly don't think dios is evil, and although I disagree with him, his comments have given me many things to think about. Other avowedly conservative posters have irked me, but so have liberals, and I for one am not... [more]

You're identifying outspoken social liberals with libertarian.

Fair enough. I've seen contrasting definitions of what "left-libertarian" signifies, but I'm not as equipped to answer the question as others might be. I can see dios' point, though. (I don't want to derail here.) I wouldn't mind heavier moderation across the board, but as for less Statist (Modist?) solutions, I like cgc373's idea.

I'll pick up here. LiveLurker, I'm confused. You consider yourself a valued and loyal member of Metafilter, and yet your contributions are extraordinarily limited. "Geo Bush or Matt"? What do you mean? I have no idea. All I get is that you don't really know very much about this topic, and you don't care terribly much about it either. As for issues that are "WAY MORE IMPORTANT", perhaps you can mention them so someone can help you learn more about those.

I really really don't like to derail, but I have to let it out. I saw markovich's "Redemption Camp" question before..it's a one off, I said. But I have this image of a sadistic prison warden in my head... then I read this question, found it slightly odd in terms of word choice, till I saw this:

I basically echo grumblebee above, but I have faith in the moderation here, so I think things will work out well in the end.

So, too, do I also not understand the anger upthread directed against jenny diski.

I dislike her. Why? Two words: hey ho. A bastardization of a perfectly useful work song pacing phrase, every time I've heard it used nowadays, it carries with it connotations of supremely arrogant, nonchalant dismissiveness. Hey ho.

I thought a libertarian wouldn't care about any law restricting peacetime freedom of movement. Isn't it the logical endpoint of libertarian principles to allow freedom to people as much as markets? (Not snarky, just surprised.)
posted to MetaTalk by StrikeTheViol at 10:52 AM on October 21, 2007
Let me tell you what real freedom is. Real freedom is obeying the Lord and His anointed ministers on earth. You're free to obey the laws of this Christian nation and stay out home where you belong. Happy?

I'll play: I thought it was supposed to be something more like "Cuba would be a great place to ship those parasitic invalids stealing decent Americans hard-earned tax dollars." How many points did I score?

Probably thinking of the goyim expression "futzing around" which is a minced oath version of "fucking around", so oddly, it is surprisingly close. Although, if my grandmother heard me say "putzing around", she would probably give me a zetz.

CPB, I think you missed loquacious' point by focusing on it's hyperbole to the exclusion of substance. I think some of the people who run the NFL, like their less wealthy counterparts promoting Ultimate Fighting, would happily bring back bloodsports if they could find a societally acceptable way to handle it. I've spoken to libertarians that have no problem with that possibility. I have little confidence that the people running the NFL care for the the abstract values of sport, while recognizing... [more]

Well, polyhedron. Scientology is a transparent attempt to make money. If you look at the history of a whole bunch of current religions, you don't see them becoming wealthy until many generations on, which indicates the first adherents believed in something other than simply marketing their beliefs for cash.

davy, I'm almost certain it's been brought up before, but for the benefit of the inexperienced, if you chafe so much under the yoke of the mods, why post something like this to metatalk? Do you expect people to rally to you and overturn mod decisions? I just don't follow.

I'm not trying to bait. I mean, I was a bit surprised it stood, but the thread itself doesn't seem to be too bad. I'm not quite sure what it is you would want. It seems perfectly normal to want to experiment from time to time. If there was a contract of sorts outlining mod behavior I could understand, but there isn't. Would you want one? (I'm not trying to aggravate you, and I'm sorry in advance if I sound obtuse.)
