anybody recognize this alphabet?

anyone familiar with the language/alphabet used in this WWII-era document from western China? my best guess is something related to the Yi language, but that could (of course) be totally wrong.

squeezing grad school notebooks into a digital realm? is iphoto the way to go?

i'm about to embark on a document-imaging and archiving project. i have dozens of handwritten notebooks, a 7 megapixel camera, tripod, macbook, and large external drive. is iphoto going to be useful for this? (or sketchy i may use a separate iphoto library on an external drive?). are alternative software/strategies preferred for managing all these document images? (in case it matters, i'm not interested in putting them online at this point).

what does it mean, the shooting with/of the lights out?

what's the origin / meaning of the phrase "he's shooting [playing?] lights out"?

where would tupac *not* go to collectively mix music online?

i'm looking for a site like jamglue, but one more focussed on the indie-rock/acoustic stuff, and way less consumed by hip-hop? what are similar web-based, track editing/mixing alternatives?

Anyone still speak 2-D barcodese?

Help me solve the mystery of an obscure 2D barcode, indexing historically valuable documents from the Vietnam war!

Is 80s MIDI gear still useable now?

i happened upon an old Korg Poly 800 synth (vintage 80s!). i understand it is one of the earlier MIDI synths--but i don't really grog MIDI. what additional cables/equipment will i need to use it to control the many possible sounds i see in garageband on my macbook?

help me convert a mini-fridge into a foot-rest/fridge?

will a mini-fridge ("cube") still function if turned on it's back (cooling coils downward-facing)?

are they even called "jersey's"?

i'm wondering if there are hidden dangers for a non-soccer fan to buy some soccer jerseys and start using them for both casual wear and exercise (this dual-use of the shirts is particularly appealing--less clothes to worry about)?

should i start ritually cannibilizing ibooks?

broken ibook conundrum: help me come up with an affordable and sensible replacement solution?

moonlight

an egregiously lo-fi and unpolished acoustic recording. the song was once designed to 'woo' a girl of my fancy. it worked, for a while anyway.

are slow motion dream disasters a new thing?

do dream sequences set in slow motion (as in horrific-but-un-stoppable-accidents) pre-date the use of slow motion photography? specifically, are there pre-film literary references to dream events taking place in slow motion? (yes, a question similar to this one, but i'm interested in slow motion in the dream-scape here).

Shiny Faucet Envy

FaucetFilter: I'm in a rental apartment, and my heavy cooking and homebrewing proclivities have me pining for a better kitchen faucet. Do you have any advice for finding, installing (and then when I move out), uninstalling a higher-end sink faucet?

did i miss something?

what are these circular stickers i see on everyone's cars that show a blue hat and eyeballs underneath (which, when seen from afar, resembles a car k-car profile with the eyes as wheels)?

sallie mae (you suck)

complete lark! fueled by a bottle of chianti and deep sympathy for a friend smitten with that pesky grad-school-student-loan-debt, i seem to have concocted an acoustic lament on the subject. in an attic, (ok, horrible acoustics, i admit).

do plastic skid-plates on cars actually do anything?

the plastic netherparts under the engine of my jetta have finally fallen out, after some altercations with those concrete front-tire stops in parking lots. is it important for the future of the engine/mechanical bits to get these replaced?

humans can't be this random, right?

could there actually be a reason why so many of the bad drivers in the 'hoods around here make a particularly dangerous move so often: left-turns from the far-right lane, and vice versa?

i know a guy, who has a friend, who knows this other guy, who heard about someone maybe wanting to talk to a pro about...

i'm curious if anyone has experience getting counseling or therapy (for career-advice/depression/whathaveyou), *without* losing the security clearance (and hence the job)? or scotching chances to get another job where a clearance is all-too-assuredly-required (here in d.c.)? how is that done? alternatively, where could...my friend...go to read about the policies attending to such a quandary? kthxby.

name that song? it's killin' me...

what's the name of that song, couple years back, cello, acoustic guitars, male and female duet, b&w video with the camera slowly spinning from the inside of a circle of singers/musicians and a portion of the lyrics go something like "hurricane come knock me down" (or maybe it was 'tornado'?) is it just me or is it impossible to search for song lyrics on the intarwebs!

Is my bank account filled with kryptonite?

How do I find a competent human at the IRS? Or will my refund get spent by someone else, whose account number was mistakenly used (by my incompetent preparer) on my return?

help a historian out?

PhotoshopFilter - I need to bring two map images together, one of a map, the other of a map overlay that was traced on top of the map. Is there a trick to somehow automate this in photoshop?
