Six hours in Vancouver airport
How desperate do you think he will be to get out of the airport? If he wanted to go somewhere like Stanley Park he would be looking at about a minimum 30min cab ride, at atleast $30. Plus he will also need time to reclear customs. He might be able to go out for a meal in Richmond, as there are many excellent Chinese and Asian restaurants and food courts to be had for a quick (10-15min cab ride) trip.
Not that it is the funnest place in the world, but the secure gate... [more]

Books that grab you and don't let go
I really enjoy Stephen Pressfield. I have just started reading "Killing Rommel" which is set in North Africa in WW2, but his previous books have been set in the ancient Mediterranean. I loved his book The Afghan Campaign, a grunts view of being in Alexander's army. I really like Pressfield's books because they are extremely well written and researched but not over long (300-400p).... [more]

divx? DVD? what?
Pretty much all has been said. I use DVD Decrypter to copy everything (movies or tv shows). If I just want to load up a bunch of episodes on my laptop for a trip I use Handbrake to convert them to a small size. If I am backing up a movie to an actual disk I use DVDShrink.
I am not bothered by disc switching or menus (bathroom breaks), but you could use DVD Decrypter to copy all the episodes to your computer and then use Handbrake to convert them to a smaller size (AVI),... [more]

Endnotes! Help? Please?
I might be reading your question wrong, but what about in text references and then just a 'works cited' page at the end without any numbering? Something like this:
Text
A recent study showed the moon was in fact made of cheese (Jones, 2007)...
Work Cited page

Depending on how much work you have already done and how soon the paper is due, using a citation manager (even this late in the process) might be easiest.
Does your school subscribe to RefWorks? That would be free at least and has all the major and minor citation styles built into it.
The other option would be to create it manually. In the text itself you can add a superscript number and then create the endnote page with the numbers yourself.... [more]

"Mark As Unread" Doesn't Work For Me Anymore
I agree with everything that has been mentioned already. Make use Gmail labels, I find them to be a real time saver. Once you have set up labels, you can apply filters for them so they are automatically applied. Plus when you are in am email it is real easy to remove a label.
Even if you don't want to drink the Get Things Done kook-aid, using the @ symbol when naming labels keeps that item close to the top of the list. When I am working on a project that will generate a... [more]

A lengthy commute would be a serious bummer for an exciting move
According to the Translink site the trip from Kootney Loop (in Burnaby, at the intersection of Franklin and East Hastings) should take about 15 minutes. If your main focus is your partner's commute, looking in that area is your best bet. Renting in Vancouver can be pretty pricey but it has been a while since I have had to do it.
Not sure if this link will work correctly but it shows the route from Kootney Loop to Cap College on Google Maps.

How to stop young dudes from taking over library ‘puters
Envisionware is not a great piece of software, but it sounds like it has not been configured at all to allow the kids to do all these exploits. It sounds like the Admin module has not been password protected properly as well as I have a feeling that the patron number dump does not work correctly. It is probably set up to read any Xnumbered digit as 'valid' (how ever long your library card numbers are) so typing in 123456789 and then next time using 987654321 works for them.... [more]

Which artists release both vinyl + mp3 downloads ?
Several recent releases on Merge have this option, I picked up the last Robert Pollard on vinyl and did the download. Not sure if they do it for all their artists and it seems to be a limited time only thing. As an aside, I just noticed that Merge also makes newer material available in FLAC.

OutlawedYeomen: agreed, I would also pay a few bucks more for the vinyl+mp3 over the cd. It is strange that labels don't advertise this more (but knowing how some are run its not surprising). Matador seems to be pushing this quite a bit on their website (very excited about the MoB reissues)

Two Cats are Better than One?
We have two 3yo olds. We adopted them from a kitten rescue at 8 weeks. Other than the first year they have been very healthy. They are holy terrors, but usually with each other. Their favourite pasttime is play fighting. Knowing their personalities now, I cannot imagine the destruction they would have caused to our condo if we just adopted one of them.
I also think by being together, they have actually kept themselves healthy both mentally and physically which cut down... [more]

Creating aliases in Media Monkey etc?
Probably wouldn't be pretty, but in iTunes you could add all the other album titles into the comments field and that way if you did a search for say "The Essential Clash" it would bring up Train In Vain, even though the ID3 Tag has it belonging to London Calling. This would of course only work when searching, not in the music library itself. Like I said, definitely not pretty.

How do I remind my professor to write that letter of recommendation?
When I was applying for grad school a few years back, about a month prior to the deadline I sent out a blind copy email to all my letter writers reminding them. My thinking at the time was that way it didn't seem like I was singling out anyone in particular. I just mentioned that the deadline was approaching and I think I just asked everyone to quickly reply with whether or not they had sent in their letter. Mind you we did not have a fancy online system to keep track of what letters were sent.... [more]

What's an RTS game for me?
It has been a long time since I played it, but the old Close Combat could be played in Campaign mode. The troops you had left from one mission often was all you started out with on the next (often a counterattack). And I seem to remember that whether you won or lost affected which mission you had next.
I also recommend Hearts of Iron, though turn based and not an RTS.
I also have been on a similar quest. I prefer more squad based type games,... [more]

Big BIG Books
Here in Vancouver, the large local children's bookstore sells some and will pretty much special order anything in for a customer. Possibly something like that exists in Chicago. I came across one store called Children in Paradise, not sure how big they are or if they do special orders for customers.

Help a future cheater to never exist
The university where I was a librarian for a while tried a different tact. In one of the programs we tried to de-emphasize that 'plagiarism bad' aspect. Instead they thought that explaining why ALL researchers need to correctly acknowledge other research. We tried to emphasize the positives. Anecdotally, the honey method seemed to sink in a little better than the big stick scary method.

Speaking as someone who would be on the other end of the pop-up. It would be damn annoying to be in the middle of a long reference interview, several tabs open and multiple searches in progress and then to discover that a pop-up is in the middle of the screen and messed up what you are typing. exceptinsects: Is it a multi person desk or single person desk? A public library where I worked that had a multi person desk had one person designated as 'rover' on the schedule for an hour. The idea was if they were not busy they would rove around for 10 minutes or so (though it quickly become dubbed 'pornpatrol'). But it was still hard for people to remember to go do it.

Not sure of your access to a good public library, but there is a series of excellent books published by Gale called Novels for Students. They cover Mrs. Dalloway in volume 12 p148-167. I often recommend this series to high school students.
Gale publishes other books on literature as well and Mrs Dalloway is also covered extensively in Vol 20 p390-432 of "Twentieth-Century Literary Criticism" though this may be a bit advanced for your daughter.... [more]

Will you marry me (even if I don't spend 2 months of my salary on a ring)?
Bought my fiance a cheap silver ring from a street vendor as the proposal was a whim. She lost it in a couple of months. We have never bought wedding ring and have been married 11yrs now.
smackfu may be partly correct. We could definitely afford one now but since she is a chef, she would have to take the ring off fairly regularly and we are both quite sure she would promptly lose it. Me, I am just to lazy and cheap to get one for myself.

how do I know if a book/article is peer-reviewed?
There has been already a lot of great advice. I will echo the one about using library databases, some of them will be only academic/peer reviewed (like JStor). Often the page that you connect to the database will indicate if it is all or some peer reviewed journals (my library does this). Also in many of the citations for the individual articles will indicate journal type.
I teach a lot of library skills/information literacy classes and it can be tricky... [more]

Why is 9th ave called Broadway?
According to "Street Names of Vancouver" by Elizabeth Walker, the name was changed in 1909 with by-law 676 but for pretty much the same reasons as stated in Wikipedia. It was a real estate boom and "the name was changed in anticipation of the area becoming the centre of a great metropolis a la Broadway, New York.
Not sure where the Wikipedia date comes from, but the information in the book comes from the City of Vancouver Archives.
