I think this was a popular motif at the turn of the last century. I remember seeing a late-Victorian history book on Rome that depicted a map the empire like this (Gauls, Huns, Persians etc). I also remember seeing a cartoon once (Punch?) of a map of the Russo-Japanese War also in this manner.

As a slight aside. I used AskMe the other day answer a reference question. The person wanted to find how to easily convert a dvd to watch it on an iPod.

But Taz, if you resort to a SLUT then you just end up with a nasty dose of Contested License and Access Protocals. And those things take months to clear up

Ask post: Six hours in Vancouver airport
How desperate do you think he will be to get out of the airport? If he wanted to go somewhere like Stanley Park he would be looking at about a minimum 30min cab ride, at atleast $30. Plus he will also need time to reclear customs. He might be able to go out for a meal in Richmond, as there are many excellent Chinese and Asian restaurants and food courts to be had for a quick (10-15min cab ride) trip.

Not that it is the funnest place in the world, but the secure gate... [more]

MeTa post: Oh shit, it's a walk-off!
A looks better, but has scaling issues

B looks a bit dated but loads faster.

That said I never used the tag cloud and will probably never use either of these pages.

Now if you can do some sort of better smart grouping or stemming (jobs/job, wifi/wireless, apple/mac, gift/gifts to name just a few on the sample page) that is something I could really get behind.

Ask post: Best places to go in the Canadian Okanagan
Not sure if Sorrento might be out of the way for you, but if not definitely look into dropping by Crannog Brewery. They grow their own hops (organic) as well as having a 10 acre fine. Plus the ales are yummy.

Ask post: Books that grab you and don't let go
I really enjoy Stephen Pressfield. I have just started reading "Killing Rommel" which is set in North Africa in WW2, but his previous books have been set in the ancient Mediterranean. I loved his book The Afghan Campaign, a grunts view of being in Alexander's army. I really like Pressfield's books because they are extremely well written and researched but not over long (300-400p).... [more]

Ask post: divx? DVD? what?
Pretty much all has been said. I use DVD Decrypter to copy everything (movies or tv shows). If I just want to load up a bunch of episodes on my laptop for a trip I use Handbrake to convert them to a small size. If I am backing up a movie to an actual disk I use DVDShrink.

I am not bothered by disc switching or menus (bathroom breaks), but you could use DVD Decrypter to copy all the episodes to your computer and then use Handbrake to convert them to a smaller size (AVI),... [more]

Ask post: Endnotes! Help? Please?
I might be reading your question wrong, but what about in text references and then just a 'works cited' page at the end without any numbering? Something like this:

Text
A recent study showed the moon was in fact made of cheese (Jones, 2007)...

Work Cited page
Jones, S. (2007). The moon is made of cheese. Some Dubious Journal, 123, 691-699.

Depending on how much work you have already done and how soon the paper is due, using a citation manager (even this late in the process) might be easiest.

Does your school subscribe to RefWorks? That would be free at least and has all the major and minor citation styles built into it.

The other option would be to create it manually. In the text itself you can add a superscript number and then create the endnote page with the numbers yourself.... [more]

Ask post: "Mark As Unread" Doesn't Work For Me Anymore
I agree with everything that has been mentioned already. Make use Gmail labels, I find them to be a real time saver. Once you have set up labels, you can apply filters for them so they are automatically applied. Plus when you are in am email it is real easy to remove a label.

Even if you don't want to drink the Get Things Done kook-aid, using the @ symbol when naming labels keeps that item close to the top of the list. When I am working on a project that will generate a... [more]

Ask post: How can I run a successful bookclub?
Sadly SFPL does not seem to have any resources online, but both Vancouver Public Library and Seattle Public Library have information on how to start and run a book club. You also might want to see if SFPL has book club sets where they will lend you multiple copies of the same book along with background information on the author, etc.

Ask post: A lengthy commute would be a serious bummer for an exciting move
According to the Translink site the trip from Kootney Loop (in Burnaby, at the intersection of Franklin and East Hastings) should take about 15 minutes. If your main focus is your partner's commute, looking in that area is your best bet. Renting in Vancouver can be pretty pricey but it has been a while since I have had to do it.

Not sure if this link will work correctly but it shows the route from Kootney Loop to Cap College on Google Maps.

Not to second guess anyones choice of tags, but after these tags are cleaned up maybe somesort of front-tagging project may be a good idea.

Maybe a script that pulls 10 posts that have only 1 or 2 tags and then MefiMails a tagging posse member. They could then go in and add more tags if necessary or tick a box saying the tags are fine.

It was funny, I think probably atleast half of the last 50-60 that I did were broken links - single link posts. I know I counted on one of the last batches of 10 that 7 posts were broken.

When it came to those 2000 or 2004 election posts, thank god for auto-complete. I would just start typing algore or johnkerry and hit enter.

Ask post: How to stop young dudes from taking over library ‘puters
Envisionware is not a great piece of software, but it sounds like it has not been configured at all to allow the kids to do all these exploits. It sounds like the Admin module has not been password protected properly as well as I have a feeling that the patron number dump does not work correctly. It is probably set up to read any Xnumbered digit as 'valid' (how ever long your library card numbers are) so typing in 123456789 and then next time using 987654321 works for them.... [more]
