I think this was a popular motif at the turn of the last century. I remember seeing a late-Victorian history book on Rome that depicted a map the empire like this (Gauls, Huns, Persians etc). I also remember seeing a cartoon once (Punch?) of a map of the Russo-Japanese War also in this manner.

MeFi post: Some papers
Cool post. The region has always fascinated me since I came across a copy of Byron's Road to Oxiana at a thrift shop when I was little. As an aside, I always wanted to name my Kraut Rock/Prog Rock power trio Transoxiana

MeFi post: Brief books in style
There is the 33 1/3 series. Some are fascinating, some are, well, crap.

It seems books have become like cds, that we must cram as many pages/minutes into them as possible.

I received a copy of spartacusroosevelt's (who I thought was named SPASTICUSroosevelt for a while, but that is a different story) cd in one of the early MeFi swaps and can confirm that it truly did rock my world.

Yup its back. Would love to know more about where these came from. Many of the covers look similar, like they were available to purchases in their PX, which makes them all that more creepy to me.

Pretty sure scumbags are found in all of societies stratas.

That said, the picture of Colby on CNN is pretty dorky looking. Maybe the women thought if he looks like Howdie Doody he can't be a bad guy

MeFi post: "She gave me two choices, and five days to decide. Either Britta would leave Luna or I would pack my things and move out."
I count myself as a big Gal500/Luna fan, but sometimes I really don't care what the artist actually thinks. I wonder if this is a complete extract or there is some text missing in between as it reads rather poorly.

MeFi post: Coelho gives out pirate copies of books... reaps benefits
This is an interesting idea.

I have often wondered whether having even just the first few chapters of a book online helps with sales. With a big name author I would think the increase would be not be so great, but a new author I am sure it would only help increase real sales.

Has someone created an authors version of MySpace (not so bloody ugly) where authors can post links to a couple of chapters or the whole damn thing if they want? Plus would... [more]

MeFi post: Eat me.
Thank god there are still people who are willing to spend ridiculous amounts on wedding cakes, as it keeps my wife employed. When she saw this online, she said "bet they charged her the bridezilla tax" as well.

MeFi post: You're just too, too obscure for me... so take me away, I know not where.
Two of my most memorable shows have been The Chills and The Clean. Though I have to say of all the excellent kiwi rock I am still the most partial to Robert Scott and the Bats. Fear of God is an almost perfect dark pop creation in my books.

A couple of Mefi Cd swaps ago I did a Kiwi sampler. I think atleast one recipient still listens to it.
posted to MetaFilter by Razzle Bathbone at 12:44 PM on January 6, 2008
It always fascinated me how much interconnection there was between the NZ bands. When I made the Kiwi Sampler, I also did up a chart for each band/song showing the inbreeding/cross-polination. I remember it was messy and pretty sure The Clean were roughly in the centre.

Just came across a 5-part Radio New Zealand program on the Flying Nun Records that is downloadable. Looks interesting.

My favourite obscure FN band is still Snapper. When I first... [more]

DU, the Library of Congress is not a depository library for all US publications.

I really hope that someone at the BL starts a blog where they randomly pick a title every week and give a bit of info on it.

MeFi post: Classic post-punk music videos
There is a whole sub genre of post-punk for stamp collector groups as well, philatelic-punk.

Also, I highly recommend "Rip it Up & Start Again" as mentioned above. The authors site has an excellent and extensive discography as well

Cool. I would love to see some sort of QIki for the episodes with links to more information on the questions and facts they discuss.

For whatever reason, I can't imagine these types of UK comedy/quiz shows (Buzzcocks, HIGNFY, QI, Mock the Week) translating to US tv. I remember the VH1 Buzzcocks copy, and it sucked terribly.

Interesting, I read a slightly different version on the International Herald Tribune site the other say. But a few nit picks.

The title of the NYT article is very terribly misleading, it maybe should be something like "Libraries Shun Corporate Deals to Place Books on Web".
