Ask post: Coffee, anyone?
Coffee press. Add hot water and ground coffee and wait 2 or 3 minutes, press and pour. Nothing to break or learn, easy to clean and store.

If you refuse shipment, they'll get it back and it's the same as having cancelled your order.

Then just reorder when the new ones come out.

What's the review tool? Is it an in-house product? What are the specific problems / error messages you're running into?

You can use Pastie to save some sample error messages to show us to help get you going.

You can with SIFR, which is not super easy to set up but does allow this sort of thing, with graceful fallback to showing regular text if Flash or Javascript is not available.

Ask post: Where's the great Mormon novel?
The Jewish culture has always been strongly linked to urban environments, trade, and arts -- and tended to be interspersed as 'outsiders' throughout a larger society. Mormon culture is centered in Utah where they are in a strong majority, just part of the mainstream culture. Normalcy is what Mormonism is all about in day to day life, despite how foreign it might appear to those of us on the outside when you just hear theological differences. At least, this is my experience being from Utah, and a... [more]

Ask post: Internet Sales Tax?
My understanding, which comes from talking to accountants in the process of creating several online stores for various companies, is that you must collect sales tax and remit it to any state which you have a physical location.

Are these employees operating offices in those other states or just telecommuting? Is the business itself registered to operate in those states? Here's an article with an overview that also matches my experience of what's required.... [more]

Ask post: Blinded by the (fluorescent) office lighting
In your situation in the past I've waited until I was the only one around, and removed the light cover and twisted one or two of the lights in the bank to be just slightly off contact. I did this because I figure it's better to ask forgiveness than permission since I didn't want it to take weeks for a request to go through and I wasn't damaging anything.

Just remember: the light is there so that you can do your work. Don't feel bad either asking them to take care of this... [more]

Ask post: Help us coat our floor in something deliciously hideous!
Looks like you can get linoleum/marmoleum for a bit less then $7.50/sqft. This site it's listed at around $3.50/sqft, and I didn't shop around that hard. If you have an old house it would probably go with it better then vinyl, and the squares are nice and bold, and you can either be really graphic laying down contrasting colors or just do solid colors.

Ask post: Is there a Bible for liberals?
I'm quoting a friend of mine, who I asked about your question and who is a pastor:

The short, smart aleky answer is that liberals don't need the Bible to be annotated to make it liberal. A good translation is, all by itself, a very progressive book.

I don't know of any particular editions that are marketed specifically toward liberals, mostly because the Christian publishing industry, on the commercial side at least,... [more]

Additionally, he says if you are hardcore liberal you'll want a Jefferson Bible. Thomas Jefferson went through the Bible and took out anything that was supernatural, and just left core moral teachings. But also he says that Jefferson didn't have authority to take stuff out of the Bible.

As an aside, I'd love to see what would happen today if a president or major political figure took it upon themselves to edit the Bible, wow.... [more]

Ask post: Obligation to Reservists?
It might not be voluntary any more once you've agreed to it. The same way that it's voluntary to sign up for the reserves, but once you are in there are many involuntary things you have to do -- so too with training, you sign up for the training and then it becomes your duty to go and do the training. He couldn't stay home the day the training starts without getting in trouble.

Ethically, these laws are meant to protect reservists so that they are free to train and... [more]

Ask post: bah humbug
Just gracefully decline to participate if it bothers you, and don't worry much about it otherwise. Family traditions always start somewhere, and now that both of your sisters have families of their own they're reconsidering how they spend the holidays. That's just life - things change, they're not out to make your life worse, but make their own life better. Be happy for them and wish them well, and don't try to stop the hands of time from turning.

Ask post: What is a better investment between Nikon D80 and Canon Digital Rebel XT and which one do you enjoy working with more?
How much is the warranty?

You are probably more likely to have the camera dropped or stolen instead of malfunction in the next two years, so I'd say unless its pretty cheap to extend it, don't bother.

For wedding photography, an external flash is essential. You'll be taking lots of shots in dim reception halls with no chance do-overs. Lighting a large group of people with the on camera flash is hard, and the externally attached flashes sit higher above the camera and are usually more flattering. Especially if you get a flash bracket or diffuser (like this).

Nothing wrong, just you'd pay a bit more. If you go to the store you can try the camera out first though, which is a plus. And don't let them upsell you on expensive accessories that you didn't plan on buying before going in.

Marxchivist, I tried one out and like it and am planning to get one someday when I am back taking more photos (been too overwhelmed with work lately). If you look through photos tagged with lightsphere on Flickr, there's lots of nice examples. Just seems to mellow out the light nicely and take out all the harsh edges.

Ask post: How do secularists deal without the comfort of religion?
It sounds like you might like Zen Buddhism, which can be fairly ritualistic but at the same time empty of much of the superstructure of theology that other religions have (this is what I do).

Also, Unitarian Universalism is full of agnostic members, and pulls in elements from many faiths and rituals. The UU church largely does not take positions on what you should or should not believe, and still provides services and community and probably like minded people to yourself.... [more]

Ask post: 2.2Ghz vs. 2.4 Ghz. Can it possibly be worth an extra $500?
No, it's not going to be enough of a difference to matter much if it's increasing the cost of the laptop by 15 or 20%. Also, you may want to wait until the middle of January (Macworld), they might update the whole line and you'd get the processor increase for free. It's only a few weeks away.

I like matte screens, I hate reflections. If you have windows behind you while you work avoid glossy, otherwise it's not likely to matter.

3rd party RAM does not violate the warranty. Just keep the original memory, and in case you have a problem and they try to accuse the 3rd party RAM, swap in the original RAM and you're good to go. If you get memory from a reputable source you're likely buying the same stuff apple is putting inside anyways (Samsung, for one, if I remember my own). And instead of paying $800 you're paying $200. Enough of a difference to buy a giant 24" screen from Dell with the money saved.... [more]

There is virtually no chance that you will be unsatisfied day to day with a matte screen, and a small but significant chance that you will be annoyed daily by the glossy screen. To me, if you aren't sure which you'd like, then the default choice should be matte.

Yeah, it's because we're gay and should anything happen there are religious family members who may try to take over, so I'll need to probably go to some length to make sure everything is set up right. I was hoping for some easy answer or ready to fill out form like there are for medical directives. Our wills and medical proxies were easy enough to set up on our own with software that's out there.

Thanks again, everyone.

What's his relationship with his boss? Your question reworded into a statement seems to cover what you'd want to communicate.

If you create a new position which merges both of these current jobs, it will save the company $YY,YYY in in salary and benefits. This weekend make up a resume and a nice cover letter asking to be considered, highlighting why you'd be good for the position. Give this to your boss. He'll know you are serious, and he'll have a formal sort of notice that you are seeking this out, and he'll have something to give to his higher ups or HR.

Since you've already talked to him about the position, this is a neutral and natural way of furthering the process. It will prod him into doing or saying something, at... [more]

Ask post: Apply for a loan to help my credit?
Your current credit cards should be enough. If you have a high credit score like you say, and you've got income enough to show you can afford a loan, no lender is going to turn you down when you want to get a car or home. Keep in mind that lenders want desperately to loan money to you, it's how the make their money. You don't have to do take out unneeded loans to prove yourself to them.

Ask post: Dust in my digital eye
I got sand in one of my lenses, and took it in to a local shop - they were going to send it somewhere to get cleaned, but would not guarantee that the lens would come back functioning or clean, and the charge was going to be just about what the lens cost new ($300), so I just bought a new lens. Just an anecdotal story, of course, and I didn't shop around for a better rate. Now I know a bit more and would have called up the maker of the lens and inquired about factory service.... [more]

Pursue other job offers as though you have no chance of being hired back at your current job. This place let you go... your boss can't be mad at you for taking care of business by assuring yourself of a position in case she can't get you your job back.

If they end up offering you a position before you find a nice new job then you'll be happy, but otherwise you'll be prepared.
