MeTa post: Not About Tim Russert
You make pot pie after you've roasted a whole bird for an earlier, more formal meal. You pick the carcass and make pot pie. It really doesn't matter if it's chicken or turkey or something else. It doesn't really vary by bird, but it does vary. In my family, it's made in a big pot with (sometimes also leftover) veggies and potatoes, and with buttermilk biscuits floating on the top which makes the crust.

MeTa post: Why the gender discrepancy?
So, suddenly I'm in this politeness obligation trap with mister grumpy-wavey-hands to please get on with it and cross the road that he has so graciously backed up traffic on (only) half of for me. Pickup trucks whiz by going the other direction.

Unless there is bumper-to-bumper traffic, I do not and will not succumb to grumpy-wavy-man if he legally has the right of way. I have several techniques. Sometimes I slowly shake my head while keeping my... [more]

MeTa post: Everyone Knows Something
Well, it took me to age 20 before I knew that Whoopie Pies were not well-known outside northern New England. And today, at age 26, I find out that some people DO know what they are, but they call them gobs.

So I learned something from this.
posted to MetaTalk by lampoil at 11:40 AM on April 25, 2008
What? A moon pie is totally different from a whoopie pie. A gob looks exactly the same as a whoopie pie, to me.

A moon pie is more like a scooter pie.

I like this quote from the moon pie wiki page: "In New England, a similar item is known as a "Whoopie Pie," though chocolate cakes are used instead of graham crackers, the pastry is not dipped in chocolate and the filling is sweet cake icing and not marshmallow cream.... [more]

Ah, I see. Then I guess in your case, a moon pie is similar to a Moon Pie except that every single element is something completely different.

Both delicious, though, if you ask me. In their own way. I mean, Scooter Pies (as they are known where I come from) are delicious in a "this tastes vaguely like squishy cardboard but somehow I like it!" way, but still.

They're so huge that you'll want to share one with a friend.

HA! Fat chance.

And we use Marshmallow Fluff for a lot of things (most deliciously, and teeth-rottingly, peanut butter fudge), but not whoopie pies as I know them.

Thanks, alicesshoe.

I humbly admit that when I saw that comment right after mine in my recent activity, I thought, huh? I got that he was picking on my word choice, but as someone who's read a lot about polygamy, I couldn't fathom what even a joker would think a hypothetical naughty or inappropriate polygamy blog would look like. Obviously the SLTribune's polygamy blog is journalistic, but I also do read pro-polygamy blogs, and they are even less sexy. (Well, they're... [more]

Speaking of the new Old School Sesame Street collection, this seems like a fine place to point out that a few weeks back I updated this question when I realized the sought clip would be on it. Unfortch, it looks like the Sesame Video site only has the updated Lost Dog clip, when they use a computer to make the flyers.

I love the thing that someone up there ^ pointed out which was a disclaimer about vintage Sesame Street not being suitable for toddlers today. If it was good enough for my mental health be sure and certain that I'll be passing on the madness to the next generation. My kids love this because it is very weird. All kids love weird.

I think the disclaimer is silly, too. But I think it's less about it being weird and more about modeling behavior. I think... [more]

No, it's not. All weblogs are websites where entries appear, dated, with the newest entries on top. You can complain about flickr theft on any kind of website, or you could use any other form of communication in the world to do the same thing.

MeTa post: 11: Music Challenge, TravelFilter, and the Party
For the first time, I listened to this podcast on my ipod with headphones. Two new things happened:

1. I fell asleep. But that's probably because I was on a bus and had taken a Dramamine. So I listened again.

2. There were times, when I was just zoned out enough but still paying attention (and also probably a bit groggy from the drug-induced nap), when I felt like Matt and Jess could hear me too. Maybe it was because having it right in my ear... [more]

For me, it's not the content that bothers me about Huck Finn, maxwelton. I think kids should be able to read whatever they want, and if a 12-year-old girl found and read that book, and it spoke to them, then that's wonderful. But it's another story when compiling a list to specifically recommend to 12-year-olds. If it's really a list for 12-year-olds, I'd want a list where anyone at about a 6th grade reading level can pick any book and trust it's going to be at least readable to them. If you... [more]

It just seemed, to me, like a question that 1) an internet community has little chance of actually answering, and 2) is very likely to provoke passionate answers derived more from the answerer's political ideology than from the information in the post.

I think that both of those things are true or at least potentially true. I just don't see evidence that she fabricated the story to purposefully provoke controversy. Her story seemed totally normal and... [more]

Speaking of bad advice, I laughed at this:
Wait until you have about 3 or 4 weeks of vacation and sick time saved up, then quit.

In every entry-level job I've seen (in the U.S.), that would sentence the asker to at least eight years at the one he's got. Since he's already told his boss that he wants to move to a different city, I kind of doubt he's going to reach that vacation/sick time goal.

Obviously, I didn't see yours, which you admit is "a pretty sweet deal." Agree, nursegracer.
