Tokyo mefites to meet for a drink
Lady Gratishades and I are going to be in Tokyo the last weekend of the month (tourists, no concrete plans). If last Saturday night of the month suits fellow Mefites I'd love to meet up (Lady G ain't a MeFite but given the fact that she hears so much about the place I reckon she's an honourary one at least). I'll keep an eye on the posts and if possible be great to meet up.

Argh! Disregard above message as OP is talking about the week after and don't want to hi-jack thread. May be about the following two weeks so will follow thread with interest.

Above should have read 3/29 - 2 of
mai- as OP could you clarify if gen's suggestion of 29th is good with you (apologies if I'm misinterpreting comments but 29th seems to work for most who can make this window)?
If so I can post to the front page of Metatalk as Meetup.

Please indicate confirmed attendees in thread to get an idea of numbers...
Confirmed- Gratishades, 2 of.

Well fellow mefites this looks as though it is dying a death- just arrived in Tokyo after fairly nightmarish journey (lost luggage and delayed.
As we seem to have nothing organised may I suggest that you are free to join me for a soccer game at Paddy Foleys 9.30 pm Saturday evening if in the slightest interested or no better things to do. It is a big game (well for Scottish folk like me) and one of Japan's favourite sporting exports, Shunsuke Nakamura, will be playing so... [more]

Raising the level?
JimmyJames, regarding the "snark" flag; I really don't think this would help. As officially the most level headed and objective guy in the world (according to me and my mum, OK not even my mum) even I do find myself filing people under B for bad if I disagree with their political viewpoint.
dios raises a good point. I can't remember reading a (previous) comment by dios that I agreed with. Used to think that he was either insane or just out for a troll but a lot... [more]

Search me!
Bug Report (I think) ; I searched for words- 'look around you', filtered by Metafilter and got 90 odd Posts. Cool. Read through the first page of results then clicked for page 2 and it reverted to 'All Sites' as opposed to just 'Metafilter'- giving me page 2 of hundreds of results rather than subset of Metafilter I was looking for. Am I doing something wrong or is it a bug?

sambosambo- are you talking of changing your name or the world? It's fairly old fashioned (I was going to say quaint, but am sure that some would take issue with that) and probably better known in the UK (as derogatory to 'natives' from the time of Empire) I guess if it was something you were unaware of it's connotations.

GiveWell, or Give 'em Hell?
MeTa thread seems to have disappeared from the Google ranking for searching 'give well'. I saw it a top five yesterday- how easy would it be for a corporation to ask a search engine to nix one particular thread?

Berlin meetup, 27 October
I'd have been up for it on a different date. I'm in the Czech Rep. and would have been up for travelling but moving flat that weekend.

Stavros, thanks for the links and the unreasonably reasonable tone you managed to keep with Ambrose for the length of time you did.
I'm still in two minds wheteher Ambrose was trolling or merely a self-righteous dunce that has latched on to an otherwise laudable tenet (racism is bad) but is unable to differentiate between people acknowledging differences in culture existing and people who are actually racist.
I hope Ambrose is a troll as there... [more]

Unless it was possible to stagger Jessamyn's idea of 15 per year roll out so that those addicted to asking didn't go crazy at the same time then we could end up with a big spike of questions at the start of the year from these users making January and February even worse.
It might mean that the other 10 months were 'better' depending upon what one looks for in AskMe.
The voting idea would surely encourage prolific Askers to band together and vote... [more]

First the call out; thanks to anotherpanacea for pointing out the consistent stupidity of Milliken. Means I can remember the previous comments anytime I see his name again and treat appropriately (File under T for troll, and R for racist). Should he be banned? His statements are objectionable but good to have other points of view about, if only to laugh at and mock.

Mister A- probably right on the Eastern European front. Cohen taught English in the Czech Rep for a time and his greeting 'Jak se mash' is very similair to the Czech (Polish and Slovak too) greeting (trans. 'how are you').

Can we have an election day thread? Is that too...
Spiderwire/anyone- could you give a quick explanation at what the Tradesport link means? If I hover over 'Senate GOP' odds I get 1.4, if over 'House GOP' I get 5.15 at present. Does that mean the market believes that GOP winning the house is far unlikelier than them winning the Senate? (I'm from UK and used to betting odds written as '2 to 1', these digital odds confuse me somewhat. Thanks.

Jeez cortex! My hat is off. I thought I was bad with my MeFi affliction, being in between jobs, but the history in the sidebar to your link is most amusing (or perhaps I mean gratifying as I'm not the only one reading out-dated posts). Glad to see you have dios there for a bit of revisionist history but he seems to be more reserved in the link than he normally is on MeFi properly.
Come on dios, give us a full Irwingist narrrative of MeFi, please.

Central Europe Meetup? Long shot I guess but do we...
I’ve not seen any previous ones posted so guessing that I’m fairly stranded far from any Mefites at present but would be good to be proved wrong. Anyone up for Brno, Prague, Vienna, Bratislava etc? I’m in Brno (Czech) but up for travelling if we have a few and consensus of folk up for Meetup in Poland, Hungary, Slovakia etc? Any precedents?

Cool amberglow, e-mailed Ljubljana as you suggested with the link to this (he rather than she). E-mail in profile if you firm up plans early next year.
Xanthippe may not be around as far as Jan/Feb so looks like the numbers will be small.
Jacalta, you're name is in your profile so I wil get in touch if I hear anything from Ljubljana off the page (you too Xanthippe). I've had an inrush of friends and family booking weekends to visit here up until... [more]
