I'm going out on a limb here, I try not to do that too much. But... What about membership nominations? Each member gets to nominate another, make a case and present it here.
New membership is important to keep a community alive and thriving. It's already generally regarded and established that mefi is an pack of elitists so, why break with tradition?
Finally, it's probably time to recognize that we are a discussion group... [more]

There are still people here who post to this weblog in artful and traditional ways. There's been several recently (no examples) that really are like "the good old days" of creative weblog postings. Which, I argue, isn't understood by many people anymore. Nor, is it applicable 100% of the time, either... particularly for news related/current events types of posts.
But, then there's that link at the bottom of each post that changes the construct of not just... [more]

The more things change, the more they stay the same. In retrospect, I'm sorry I said anything at all.

What was your very first impression of MetaFilter,...
I came here because of Glen Davis' most original and sorely missed Cool Site of the Day at Project Cool. Many of us, in those early days did. Then, the place was far more web-centric. After watching the place for a few months, I signed up. Some great conversations were had in those days. Then, this place really was far more focused upon the weblog as conversation. We used to shout at each other "this is not a bulliten board!" I think that... [more]

Well, this has been covered so many times before, how is it different now?
I'll tell ya... people don't care to make it better anymore.
If some of the best posters and best commenters were to get to work and quit complaining about the loss of "The Old Metafilter Quality" this place would improve dramatically.
Perhaps it's not possible to recapture the glorious days again but, it is possible to maintiain a... [more]

It may have something to do with safe search... They just added a new system or, updated it somehow.
Try turning it off. When I turned on "moderate filtering" it sent me to the corrected results... when I turned safe search completely off, it asked me if I wanted to go the the corrected results. Go to the google search preferences page and change it.

Well, when I went through the same exercise using mozilla (changing settings, re-doing the search, etc) it did the same thing to me as it is to you. But with I.E., it prompts me to click on the corrected results.

I agree.
Personally, I enjoy the products links and such. Many times, I find people will post links to other things they like or, that they've used in the past. Because of that, I've discovered many new and cool things. Such as Trillian, Abiword, 602 Pro PC Suite 2001. All of this stuff I learned about here and because of discussions like the above.... (on dooce.com) Not having read posts in question and assuming that no names were mentioned, I would think that libel would be difficult to prove against Heather on the companys part. How could they assume she was talking about them?
Right or wrong, I'd take the posts and the letter from the company dismissing her to a lawyer and at least ask for professional advice. By dismissing her, it would seem that they have validated whatever she said on her site as true and... [more]

Even after I read the posts, I still think it boils down to non-disclosure and libel.
No matter what she said about her company, she didn't name names. No disclosure, no libel. That speaks strongly in her favor. If her employer cited her personal website and assumed that comments she made were about them, then that is a clear assumption. Acting upon assumptions has proven fatal at the water cooler and on the internet too.
Like it or not,... [more]

Free weblog services? Opinions please.
I've had...
Dan Chan, runs we::blog, a simple way to have a weblog for free.
I can't speak objectively as to it's ease of use but, it seems well documented, fast, and full of features you'd expect a weblogging service to offer. Comments, syndication, templating, ease of archiving, etc...
It was not a suitable solution for me but, some might find it just peachy. Worth a look, at any rate.

What's your opinion on using expletives on front...
I have a 15, a 13, and a 9 year old that read MeFi at times. Sometimes on their own, others over my shoulder. However, it is my job to protect them, that goes without saying.
I don't mind the expletives too much myself in the body of the resulting discussion however, on the main page... nah. Doesn't fit a profile of quality. Pure and simple.
Emotion lends to demonstration within posts at times. That I can understand... if the person who... [more]

The Well celebrated their 15th earlier this year...
I had a well account, I got it in 1986. I quit when they started sending me bills. Back in those days (1995?), we thought it was sacrilegious and evil to charge for anything in the net, we thought people that profited from the internet were equally as sacrilegious and evil. In fact, there were hackers groups that gave amazon.com a very difficult time for a week or so, as well as a dozen other early merchants (where did all of this come from? sorry!)

What I sent in, (condensed version): "I'm a consultant I work 60-70 hours a week, I drive 15-20 hours a week. I almost never watch T.V. during prime time. When I do, it's usually so bad, that I give up and switch it off. I never tape anything with my VCR, mostly because I wouldn't know what or when to tape. With TiVo, I could record large, general areas of movies, shows, documentaries, etc... when I finally do find something I like, I could search and record..." Bla, bla I won't bore you... [more]

Moderation
I've been working on the image upload...
Considering that you will receive scans in all manner of dissarray, such as huge bitmaps, .tiffs, scans of the entire scanner bed, and god knows what. You'll need to scan for quality anyway. There probably isn't an automated procedure that you could create, with the exception of some sort of OCR thing that could scan for text, a barcode, a serial number, or even a range of colors. That could work, but would be tricky.

I agree, for now... one moderator is probably okay.
However, moderators are a proven way to make sure that the groups acceptable standards are being upheld. It's worked on usenet and fido since about 1906 (heh).
