MeTa post: Likely Small, Perhaps Difficult Meet-up in the Big Easy
Yaaay! This shall rock.

Last night was AMAZING. I enjoyed hanging out with you all.

And, ColdChef - you seriously need to write a book some day. I know that I would read it.

MeTa post: Your solitary compulsion becomes a shared experience.
Do I need a new AskMe to find out how many other people have elaborate imaginary conversations that, if strict control is not exercised, are conducted out loud? Or can we just do that here?

Oh god, yes yes yes yes. I do this. It happens mostly when I'm alone, because I guess I've learned to accept this sort of behavior from myself. Sometimes it happens when I'm walking down the street, which isn't really a big deal because this is NYC and everyone... [more]

Here's one for ya -

When you're really tired and relaxed, do your feet get really warm? Like, to where you want to take your shoes off?

Always happens to me. Especially if it's been a long night and I've just had a big meal and something to drink.

MeTa post: Hey, Will, Welcome ...
Yeah, I gotta do it.

Metafilter : It's more like a puddle of vomit that someone hosed off the sidewalk but dogs still keep sniffing the same spot, wondering where their tasty morsel went.

My birthday is a power of two, and I've been programming computers since the third grade. Coincidence? I think not.

Individual spam mail? I think he misses the whole point o' spam.

Doubtful. How hard would it be to write a script to do this?

breasts != boyzone

The site didn't seem disrespectful towards women. I say let it stand. No reason to be Puritans.

I actually enjoy watching people get all hissy about stuff like this. It's an amusing way to cap off the day.

Also, because no "boyzone" thread would be complete without it - what St. Carlin said.

(it's okay to laugh)

You people only think that MeFi is a boyzone because you're too fat to get your cats declawed. Obviously, the antidepressants aren't working. Then again, how can one be happy at a time like this, what with Israel making life a living hell for all those poor, helpless Palestinians?

A few things :

1) It never ceases to amaze me how often good-old-fashioned prudery masquerades as feminism. Is it like this in other western countries? You know, the ones with the boobs on TV?

2) I tuned out for a while. How many people so far have "left, never to return" because of this thread?

3) This thread has taken far longer to metastasize than the other boyzonefilter threads. Have people finally gotten sick of these threads?

TPS - You're right, I am still here. But really only for the purposes of entertainment. I could give a crap if anyone agrees with me anymore. MeTa in general has cured me of that.

justonegirl - yeah, I've been horsing around a bit. God forbid people horse around in MeTa. The amount of seriousness in this thread convinces me that MORE horsing around is required, and not less.

(when I think of horseplay, I think of wild horses running around in fields of tall overgrown grasses, somewhere out west where the land is rugged and there are bluffs everywhere. maybe they're kicking around a ball or something)

(I also think of people getting down on all fours and pretending to be horses. that's amusing, as well.)

Yeah, I mean, I realize that these threads really aren't here to convince anyone of anything. They're just an outlet for people to vent their frustrations. In general, I do think that's a good and useful thing. Unfortunately, some people take them seriously and get angry and leave. But whatever. I guess that's their problem.

I guess the rule of internet humor applies. There's nothing funnier in this world than people taking things seriously over the internet -... [more]

MeTa post: work out your personal issues somewhere else, will you?
Sometimes I feel that MeTa is a useful part of the community. At other times, I feel that it's the most mean-spirited group therapy session ever convened.

Symbolic interactionalism can be a bitch. We all want, very badly, to develop each other.

Perhaps what we really need is a MeFight Club, where we all get together and physically kick the crap out of each other. I really do think that would be therapeutic, in some cases.

MeTa post: Metafilter - lessons learned from the BB problem?
You know, as a programmer, I'm constantly coming face to face with the word "void." Public void. Private void. Abstract public void.

When I see this, I like to imagine that my functions are returning an actual void; something without mass, shape, color, or volume. While some may be disturbed to come face-to-face with the void on a daily basis, I find myself to be comforted by its presence. It's as if, by creating code, I'm somehow shaping the void, and... It's easy to think of the He Man cartoon as a crudely-animated vehicle for the sale of cheap plastic toys. However, I believe that He Man was more than that. Much more, in fact. He Man was about choice, free will, and man's eternal nature.

Consider Skeletor. Skeletor is the very essence of evil. In fact, I'm willing to bet that, when many of you hear the world "evil," Skeletor is the first image to come to mind. I know that it is for me. However, let's... [more]

Ya know, it can be difficult to gracefully advocate an unpopular position on MeFi. God knows, I've advocated enough of them. For an opinionated person like me, it's inevitable. However, I'm glad that I've always resisted the temptation to flame out. That way, at least I can look back on my old posts and think, "god, I was really being a dick," or, "god, I did a terrible job of stating my opinion," (see The Metafilter Effect) but at least I lived to fight another day.... Some would argue that the subprime mortgage crisis began with Alan Greenspan and his reckless lowering of interest rates. However, I can pinpoint the precise moment when the whole fiasco began : 1989, when the B-52s announced to the world their acquisition of the Love Shack.

The reason why this has gone unnoticed for so long is that Kate Pierson and Fred Schneider did such a capital job of covering their tracks. Instead of appearing as the cold-hearted, money grubbing... [more]

MeTa post: Not About Tim Russert
I don't mind obit threads as long as people are okay with irreverence. It annoys me when, amidst an interesting, if critical, discussion of the subject, someone pipes up with a "how dare you speak ill of the dead" comment. I mean, they're dead. They ain't gonna care. We might as well be honest with ourselves and others.

Granted, a funeral, or some other place where the subject's close friends and family is likely to be present is no place for irreverence.... [more]

CHILDREN SHOULDN'T BE ON MEDICATION!

God, this shit kills me. People will fucking do anything if some doctor says it's alright. Remember, lobotomies were in vogue for a while. So was giving kids heroin as a cough suppressant. If people want to take snake oil/harmful placebos/poison, that's fine. But leave the poor kids alone. Some kids are just different, and there is no quick fix. Nurture... [more]

Remember: always end your angry rants with a note saying that you have no personal experience at all with the topic.

Well, perhaps I haven't *had* "difficult" children, but I've *been* a "difficult" child. And, like Burhanistan above, I'm glad they didn't put me on psychoactive meds as a kid. If I was a kid now, I'm sure they'd be shoving them down my throat.

Rooster Attack is so the name for my new band.

(and Pax - the answer is 'yes')

I don't regret posting my opinion on this matter. It doesn't wound my ego to know that people out there disagree with me. But I do regret that my comments have become the focus of this thread instead of dejardins' initial inquiry. But, whatever. I guess there's really no such thing as a derail in MeTa.

So, carry on, I suppose.

When reading some of the responses here yesterday, I thought people were being kinda dense in assuming that I was against putting kids on psychoactive meds *in all cases*. But going back and looking at my original comment, I can see how people got this impression. So, to clarify- I'm bothered by the frequency with which kids are put on these drugs; not by the fact that it's done at all. There's no doubt that some kids are better off with this stuff, but I would argue that most of those... [more]
