Ask post: Gordian knot
Pin or toothpick to peck away at the center of the knot - I've used this method lots on fine, delicate chains and it works every time.

Ask post: Is a mattress cover really necessary?
Yes, a mattress pad, but I use it specifically because we have a big, thick feather mattress on top of our regular mattress, and the pad helps to keep it from shifting.

Ask post: Can a Swede open a US bank account?
Yes, with a TIN, as mentioned above. You and your transactions will be subject to a slightly higher level of scrutiny due to Patriot Act, but as long as your name isn't on an OFAC list and you don't live in a country where a US Bank will not/can not do business, it shouldnt' be a problem.

Ask post: Is it possible to get an MRI and have it read, without a referral?
It is possible - I have done it myself (Maryland) - it will be an out-of-pocket expense, most likely (mine was @ $1300).

Ask post: Divorce, Guilt, Pursuing Happiness
I can relate somewhat to your situation - I live where I live because of my son (who lives with me). His dad and I made a promise to him when we split up that we would make it as easy as possible for him to spend time with both of us. I made certain to move to a home that was in his same school district when we moved out, and later when I remarried, my current husband made the same commitment to him - we're staying put until Son is finished with high school (another 3 years).... Buy one of these. Microplane foot file - basically a foot zester, but they work like a dream. QVC carries a popular model.

Ask post: I want my two dollars!
While it's true that Reg CC is the regulation that sets the rules for the maximum amount of time that a bank can take to clear your checks, banks are able to and do set their own time frames to operate within that reg. Many banks set shorter float schedules as a competitive measure, which is admittedly most effective when competing for commercial business, but can also apply to consumers as mentioned above. I believe we're currently on a "0,1,2" float schedule, which means... [more]

Ask post: Frederick, Maryland: amuse me.
This weekend is the Frederick Festival of the Arts, which means despite any forecast to the contrary, it will rain. The first Saturday of every month, well, there's First Saturday - shops stay open late, activities and music are planned in the street, there's a "theme" - see more info here. The Mudd Puddle is a cool little coffee shop - there was an article in last Sunday's paper about some zinesters that are starting up a library there, so that's cool. Isabella's is very good, as... If you're in Chevy Chase Bank's footprint, you may have PNC nearby as well. They have an ATM fee-free account or accounts, but may require minimum balances.

Ask post: Losing a tug of war with my faucet.
We have one that's been in place for @ 4 years, and we pull the faucet out VERY regularly to fill pots and stuff. It's a fairly cheap model from Lowe's and we've never had a speck of trouble with it.

Ask post: I can't dress myself!!!
See, you can so dress yourself! I like the dress, too, and think it would be lovely with a pretty pendant around your neck, or skip that and do great earrings. A really fabulous bit of silver jewelry and a wrap (color would be great) are really all you need with that combo.

Ask post: Can you help me narrow down the search for a photo printer?
Sorry - got caught up in manymany hockey games last night. Home OS is XP, I'm taking beginners steps in Photoshop (babe in the woods-type stuff), and I have no idea what a paper profile is so I'll go look that up now.
posted to Ask Metafilter by ersatzkat at 4:08 AM on April 14, 2008
Ok, I read a really interesting thread on the Macworld forums (but again, I'm XP PC) and a referenced thread about Aperture and double CMM. I think with my limited experience that, generally speaking, canned paper profiles would be ok to start, but that I would probably eventually run into a frustrating situation that would make me want to learn more.

Ask post: How would I go about printing high-quality greeting cards at home?
It isn't the cheapest option, but if you're anything at all like me and the *slightest* mis-cut of a larger sheet of paper drives you mad, you should look at pre-scored card stock from someplace like Paper Source. I've run many many sizes through an HP deskjet printer and have always been happy with the results (my own wedding invitations included, though they were not foldover cards).... [more]

It could be a skiptracer - see here. Some collection agencies have their own skiptracing departments, some firms do nothing but skiptracing on bundles of debt that have been or are being sold.

Ask post: Where to park in the New York City area?
We park at the Hamilton stop near Trenton all the time, then take the NJ Transit train to NY Penn Station. Parking is relatively cheap and train tickets are @20 each round trip. We've never had any problems leaving the car.

Ask post: Gaithersburg MD affordable homes?
Frederick resident here - Naberius has a good take on the situation. North to Gettysburg by 30 minutes from here is probably still outside your price range. You might look around Charles Town, WV. I can be in the middle of town there in 25 minutes from where I live (a little west of Frederick-proper, but still inside the city limit), and you will probably find rentals in your price range, possibly a small townhouse to buy. You'd have about an hour to Gaithersburg. I commute from here to... [more]

Ask post: Which drum practice pad set should I get?
My son has the first one you linked - he keeps it at his dad's house for practice, since his dad lives in a townhouse with neighbors on each side. He's used it both on the third floor in a small bedroom, and in the (underground) first floor. It sounds a little louder than playing an electronic kit, but they've asked the neighbors and no one has ever heard anything. He (my son) says that the adjustable placement is good, as is the "feel".

Ask post: NOT constantinople
We crossed via bus and took the "tunel" to Galeta Tower - we were told most folks took the tunel up and walked down. When we left the tower and sort of followed the walking crowds, we turned right where EVERYONE else headed left, and walked down this winding, steep street that was lousy with music shops. I hate to be so vague, but I don't remember what the street was called - maybe someone else can help with that part - the steep downhill street took us to the return bus stop at the... [more]

From TripAdvisor (and sorry, I spelled Galata wrong):

Tunel Quarter is also visited frequently by the ones who are interested in music. The street, Galip Dede, going down to Galata Tower from Tunel is filled with shops selling music instruments and other stuff.

Google "musical instruments" or "music shops" turkey "galata tower" and you will find tons more information.

Ask post: itty bitty crockpot recipe
There's this absolutely disgusting (in a good, artery-clogging) warm sausage dip thing. You don't make it in a crock pot, but you serve it in one. Brown a pound of spicy breakfast sausage in a skillet, drain off the fat, then melt in two of those square packages of cream cheese and a can of spicy Rotel. Transfer to a crock pot to keep it warm for serving. Someone served it at a open house - crackers and (god help me) Fritos scoops to eat it with. Oi.

Ask post: Silent Drums for Kids?
Agreed that the price will be a challenge for electronic models. Sometimes you'll find an unboxed/floor model at Guitar Center for 500ish. FWIW, this is exactly how I started looking at drums for my son 3 years ago (he's now 14). I chose instead to buy the Ludwig sort of "starter set" from Musician's Friend at Christmas time for @350, which included crash and hi-hat cymbals. I understand the desire for silence, believe me, but since we don't share walls with anyone, and we've got... [more]

I was jumping in here to say Philosophy's Pure Grace, and I see that sanitycheck has it covered. Big department stores carry it here, as does Sephora and QVC. Here's QVC UK. Just notice that they call it "Philosopy Grace" - I had to zoom in on the bottle to see "Pure Grace" - there are two others (Amazing Grace and...the other one...Baby Grace?) that are different.

Ask post: What to do with preschool art?
I'm guessing the paper/paint/pencils/crayons are far from archival, so if you scan it, you'll have it forever. Scan it, then use it for computer wallpaper, print it on photo paper and frame it, print it on those iron-on transfer dealies that you can run through an inkjet and make your own t-shirts or pillow cases, upload it to Zazzle and do any number of things.

Ask post: Banks with online check deposit?
Remote deposit capture (RDC) is a service mostly sold to the business/corporate markets. There is typically a monthly service charge, a per-item fee, and a scanner purchase. I'm fairly certain that USAA is the first to offer it "at home", and I believe they ask you to open a line of credit for a certain amount as a "guarantee" in case you're up to some kind of funny business. Many many banks are in the initial stages of developing a consumer (as opposed to business)... [more]
