MeTa post: Haha! Let's make things worse.
Seconding what loiseau just said but, erm, what I actually came back to this thread to do, post-reading and thinking about it, was to offer to PayPal allkindsoftime $50 dollars, no hundred trillion Zimbawean dollars expected in return, because I have been very sad to see what is occurring in Zimbabwe and the situation seems to be getting worse every day. I'd quite like to give some money to someone who might be able to directly aid the situation. I'm not sure if you were entirely serious above,... [more]

MeTa post: Wonky Text Display...Just Me?
I use Firefox on Leopard, and I've noticed weird text rendering stuff on a few different sites- mostly the text looks thicker on a few lines, then fixes itself when I highlight it. Kinda weird, but I guess it's the same opacity bug we're all having.

MeTa post: Listen.
I don't want to wade through this thread as well as the original question, so i'll just say this with the knowledge that i may have been proven wrong already:

DNAB, you're being almost as much of a jerk as the OP in that thread. I don't understand why some people think the point of AskMe is to "teach people a lesson"- the point is to help someone. Why the need to come back, and back, and back and get into a pointless argument with the question asker? Saying it... [more]

MeTa post: Just The Facts, Ma'am
Uh, the point of MeMail is to let people communicate outside of the normal site. If SCDB wanted what he sent to fandango_matt out there for everyone, he would have put it here. It isn't fandango_matt's right to make that decision for him.

MeTa post: hopefully nipping this in the bud
Oh my god! It's finally happened! I've wanted to say something about what an idiot bruce is for quite some time, and now someone has made a place for me! Hurrah!

Fuck you bruce! You make OK comments sometimes but you are usually an asshole who seems to think being an old retired lawyer and judge and whatever else the fuck you are or have been makes you a better person than the rest of us! And it really, really doesn't. I don't know if you are a racist but I do know that... [more]

I'm sorry for coming late to this party and making my comment when things had started to settle down. bruce gets on my nerves, and I was just taking the opportunity to vent in an appropriate place, namely a thread about bruce being annoying. And not the threads where bruce makes comments that irritate me. I am also not 'emo', I just don't like you very much, bruce. Sorry.

MeTa post: Don't Mess With "Don't Mess With Texas"
Man, I am tired of defending my state from people. Maybe I'm just touchy (because I'm from Texas right?) but it seems like when people from other states do dumb shit, everyone stands around and says "wow, what an idiot." But when Texans do dumb shit, people take it as an invitation to guffaw and bring out the tired old stereotypes. It gets kind of old, you know? And you can't even commiserate with the people from Ohio who have to patiently tell people that not *all* of their rivers... [more]

MeTa post: 'Spergin
I have some experience with self-diagnoses, so I've attempted over the last several years to figure out if I have any kind of OCD spectrum disorder. I know I have trichotillomania, albeit quite mildly, because well... I pull my hair out in a ritualistic fashion that I don't feel I can control. Not too complicated there- the requirements are not too strict and my behavior is very clearly not normal.

I hesitate, though, to attempt to define any of my other traits that... [more]

The article semi-randomly mentions my high school, which I currently attend, at the very end. I'm just casually reading the article, dum de dum, "Plano East", and I'm done. Then, I had a total WTF? worlds-collide moment when I realized hey! that's my school! Mentioned within striking distance of Mefi!

That's a wonderful thread. I'm having to deal with my father's group of mental and emotional issues at the moment, and have been for the last 5 years or so (so, since I was 11 or 12) and probably will for the rest of my life. Because he's never bad enough that I can give up. My dad doesn't have BPD, at least as far as I know, but reading that thread makes me realize that other people have crazy parents and that maybe, eventually, things will be OK. Even if he's never better. I can be OK.

MeTa post: I can't has cheezburger. Do not want sense of taste
What happened to "If you can't answer the question, skip it"? If people don't think the question is a good one, why waste time getting all worked up about it and trying to psychoanalyze the poster? I've never seen more bad answers to an AskMe before. I'm not surprised the poster got defensive, considering how hard she got attacked. Saving the poster from herself is *not* the job of AskMe; if you can't answer the question or just think she's an idiot, why not just move on? All your good... [more]

"indications of some eating/body issues that the poster clearly doesn't have the perspective to apprehend"

See, she wasn't asking people to question her relationship to food; if she had asked people to help her create a healthy relationship to food or whatever, responses helping her to do that would be warranted. Answering the question that isn't asked, it seems to me, might be ok in moderation if it accompanies an attempt to answer the... [more]

Snyder, I agree with you for the most part, but in this thread some people were being assholes. You could also argue that the sort of answers/non-answers you're describing *don't* answer the question. In addition, they are more tolerable (in my opinion anyway) when they accompany a good faith attempt to answer the question. People who wish to question the asker or address an issue they're inferred from the question also need to take into account the asker's attitude, or so it seems to me. In... [more]

MeTa post: Youngest Mefite?
I'm 17. I seriously doubt us 17 year olds (waves at Phire, DMan) are the youngest, though. I bought my account with my Paypal account attached to my checking account.

This doesn't have much to do with anything, but as long as the topic has been brought up: I've never felt weird about being younger than average here on MeFi, but I mostly stick to Ask. The size of this community helps ease that slight awkwardness as well- I've been (by far) the youngest person on smaller... [more]

Somewhere, buried in all that text, there is a question. Probably about what is normal behavior for girls today, and is this guy reacting abnormally to this kind-of relationship.

However, it isn't clear whether this hidden question is AskMe appropriate or even worthwhile at all. This poor guy is apparently unfamiliar with AskMe and let his rather complex relationship question get buried in his rambling rant/narrative. Maybe he needs some guiding, but just because a... [more]

I know the internet has made me more perverted than most of my friends, but it's not the only factor at work. My upbringing and personality also I think have added to it. Wait, OK, is this thread about my comment? Because when I saw that thread, it had a specific question about the movie. It looks different now, mostly because the specific question has been removed. I answered the question the OP asked (offering only my opinion because that's more or less what he was asking for), and I did my best to answer the other question as well. Oh, ok. Huh. When I saw the question I swear it had a specific question about the movie (about the significance of a certain character who wasn't particularly important to the plot) and so I talked a little bit about that character. Very odd; I doubt I would make up a question spontaneously. Now I really feel like I lost my mind. Hopefully telf actually did ask the question I answered; otherwise I'll be concerned. Ha! I missed this particular drama because I was, somewhat ironically, at a summer program for "exceptional" kids without access to a computer. The issue of kids being on the internet and talking as equals to adults is sort of near to my heart, having been the 13 year old on the message board populated by people in their 30s only, um, 4 years ago. Thankfully, that board was waay nicer to me than Metafilter (where I'm still too scared to even approach the blue). Hopefully FeistyFerret... [more]

I think I beat everyone. When I graduate next year, my class will have about 1200 people in it. We hold graduation at Reunion Arena in Dallas and fill it up. At a school this big, of course, the drama tends to be less obvious to the school at large. But my friends and I are nerds, so our dramas are mostly related to how pissed Person X is because they didn't get asked to go to the movies with everyone, or how unfair Person Y's parents are by not letting them drive after they got a ticket. Man, I live like 10 minutes away from the elementary school in question in that thread. And I hate that people attack Texas for being everything that's wrong with America. Texas is just a state. It's a big state that's proud of itself, maybe a little too much, but it's just a place with people in it. People are people and will do stupid stuff anywhere. I think this would work better with requests as the focus, not offers. That's how the favors started on AskMe, it seems, and maybe that's how it should continue. Person A asks for help and Person B comes to the rescue, therefore earning the admiration of the entire community (not points). I also like HelpMe better then MetaKarma, for the reasons stated above by Eideteker.
