Help me keep a chinchilla without cockroaches.

How do we keep a chinchilla in an apartment where roaches might be present without killing the chinchilla or attracting tons of bugs?

Are the Villages in Florida as nice as they seem?

My mom is considering retiring and moving from NJ to The Villages in Florida and asked me to check up on it a bit. It seems almost too good to be true.

Following up on resumes

I need to find a decent replacement for my job when I go off to grad school. How do I follow up on these resumes I've been sent?

Graphic Designer who knows Microsoft Access/VBA?

I am a graphic designer at a distributing company who has (mostly) automated most parts of his job. I am off to grad school and need to find and train a replacement(s). We could do two part-timers, but one full-timer would be best. The more of the tasks below you can do, the better. If you can only do one half, send us your resume anyway. Here is what I currently do and the skills I use to do them: Adobe Photoshop: • Take photographs of items. (own a digital camera? a plus!) • Create clipping paths of items. • Color correct photos. (if you know who Dan Margulis is, thats a plus!) Adobe InDesign: • Lay out sales sheets. • Compile automated InDesign docs into one file and export to PDF for press. Microsoft Access: • Update Microsoft Access database from flat text files. • Construct queries. • Troubleshoot code in VBA. • Write VBA to drive Adobe InDesign. Again, the more you cross that bridge from "Creative Suite" to "Office", the better.

Help lots of readers see my typography skills!

I designed a book for a (first time) publisher in Germany. He is looking for a (anarchist/indie/punk) book distributor in the US...or any advice around that. Can anybody help?

Help me combine two cell numbers from different markets into one family plan.

Family got iPhones + family plans. If I try to port my old number, it can't be added to the family plan because we are in different "markets". How do I get this accomplished / Who do I complain to at AT&T?

Simulating the corners of my eyes.

Possible-Neuroscience-filter: How can I simulate the way things look through our fovea vs. through our peripheral? Using Photoshop.

"f I knew what I was going to do that far down the road, there’d be no point in doing it.”

I never saw Simon Birch but I found this interview Roger Ebert did with Ian Michael Smith really amazing. I don't know if it was how comfortable Ian is with sci-fi-ing up his body, how the two of them used technology to overcome their current physical conditions, the discussions of "disability blogospheres" or just how happy Roger seems to be in this conversation but the whole thing made me smile...and something made me think MeFi would agree.

Jaws took place on the east coast...

Okay, it's Shark Week, and it's reignited my interest in this. I'd like to go diving, swiming or whatever with sharks. I live in New Jersey. How can I do this without breaking the bank?

I keep writing but I don't get to the end.

I'm going back to school and I haven't written essays in about...oh...five years. I can brainstorm like crazy, but I can't seem to structure it properly. As my girlfriend puts it: my essays are just black holes that suck up my time, and I get no where.

Stupid database! Be more connecty!

Can I connect a flash program to a local offline Access database without having to run my computer as a webserver?

PositiveFeedbackCalloutFilter:This question is why...

PositiveFeedbackCalloutFilter:This question is why I love Metafilter. To me, it has all the makings of a classic AskMe. An honest query about an obscure topic, multiple knowledgeable responses, an offer to experiment, and an idea for lunch tomorrow!

How do YOU get the data on the page?

I would love some examples of high end print design workflows, especially database driven ones. Store circulars, flyers, etc. The more complete the workflow you can describe, the better.

Too bad I already went as Eddie Munster

I'm going as the wolf from Little Red Riding Hood. I don't want to do a whole wolf outfit...just something that gives the impression of a wolf.

Maybe a little less Oblique?

Do you have any favorite oblique strategy style things that are specific for the art you use them for? Like one sentence techniques that go around creative blocks and allow you to do great things?

I need a replacement for day trading program WizeTrade for my mother. Neither of us know anything about the day trading scene.

It wasn't "My Friend, the Vampire" or "M is for Monster"...

A young adult vampire book, published late 70's, early 80's? Involves a kid who meets the vampire in the basement of a library, falls asleep and wakes up having no memory of it. Main vampire's name is Radu, but I believe there were several other vampires around, also with "traditional" names (a "Carmilla" perhaps?).

Duotones, shmuotones

Looking for ideas for different vintage photograph treatments. i.e. not just duotones or hand colored. Or any other victorian inspiration you know of.

We're outgrowing our 10 year old Progress database. We need some recommendations.

Why are there glitches all over my icons in OSX?

After using software update to get to OSX 10.4.4 and uninstalling some older helper apps and reinstalling one other app, I know have "glitches" all over every edge on my screen, and a 128 pix grey box follows my cursor around. Pic inside
