Ask post: Pot Paranoia
So, I’m scrolling through this thread, minutes after smoking. I get to JimN2TAW’s comment and say to myself, “hmm, I’ve never heard of this movie Joe, but it sounds interesting.”

I open up a new Firefox window, log into Netflix, and prepare to search for Joe. What is the second recommended movie (out of 5 visible movies) on the screen? Guess. Yeah.

(And my cat is named Joe. How about that?)

YesTheyreFake.com is an excellent resource. If you scroll down the linked page, and click "locate a surgeon in the US," there are a lot of suggestions for researching doctors. Also, they appear to have fairly well-researched referrals as well.

Ask post: Identity theft - help!
Did you try calling Nextel?

I had my identity stolen by a woman who opened countless cell phone accounts using my SSN. I've gotten them removed from my credit report in various ways, but I've always needed a police report.

So what I would do if I were you, is call Nextel and see if they can verify that the account isn't yours (like not your address, name, etc.). If they can't, file a police report and try it again. If you fax the report (and/or... [more]

You know, I don't think I stressed enough how important the police report is--it's like an automatic win once the billing company and the collection agency see it.

Getting this off of your credit report is not as hard as some of the posters above might have you believing (you certainly don't need a lawyer [yet]), though it can be a bit time consuming. I've done this around 8 or 9 times (I'm in NYC too), and each has gone fairly smoothly.

@grouse: The OP mentioned a lawyer--that's why I did.

Hmm. I got copies of the fraudulent bills and took them to the precinct. Since the address on the bills wasn't mine, that was proof enough.

A few days later, the detective went out to the physical address and checked around. He was unable to pin down exactly who was committing the fraud once there, but I still had the slip of paper that I needed to provide to the creditors.

Ask post: Unchain my rollups
Can you touch the pain, or is it underneath your ribs? I have a problem that I'd describe similar to yours, but I can touch mine. According to my Pilates instructor, who can also feel the knot when it happens, it's due to overly tight lats. (I also have related psoas and oblique tightness on that side, which might add to the problem.) Try stretching and foam-rolling out your lat before doing core exercises and see if that helps.

Also, make sure your psoas is loose... [more]

No guess to why, but here's another person with a 6-7-8 problem. Can't add them to each other, can't multiply them either (except I know their squares). Makes playing cribbage against me that much more fun.

Ask post: I'm tired of walking like a baby.
If the OP is still around, I worked through a similar problem with PT and Pilates. I'm not sure what your original orthopedic problem was, but if it involved your back, hip, knee, or soles of your feet, it could be related.

I got a lot of rotation flexibility in my legs just from stretching out my IT band. You can use a roller to roll it out and do stretches like this one.

You can also try pressing into the soft part of your shins (between the... [more]

Ask post: Help me become employed in NYC - Preferably in Publishing
After college, I had a string of go-nowhere jobs, and in the course of a desultory job search, found out about the Radcliffe Publishing Course (now the Columbia Publishing Course). I'd never heard of it, but now I know that it's the most well-regarded training course by the industry. When I went (June-July 2000), I believe they had a >70% placement rate. I got a job (albeit a low-paying one) as an Editorial Assistant at HarperCollins by October. If you have $7000 to spare for what amounts to... [more]

Try a website that sells a lot of jeans, and groups them by designer, like this one, and look at the rear view. But honestly, the jeans market has grown at such an exponential rate, that I'm not sure it's all that doable. That website alone has over 50 brands, and those are just popular top-of-the-line jeans.

Have you tried using one of those "natural" deodorant sprays or sticks? As long as you don't put it directly on any mucus membranes (ie, use it on outer parts only), it should do the trick without disturbing the flora and whatnot.

Ask post: "So I notice your breath smells of liquor!"
Once I had a coworker approach me and quietly state that she noticed that she noticed that I smelled like alcohol and that she worried that incoming clients would "talk." I had NO idea what she was talking about. Eventually I figured out that it was my Purell.

Point? I don't really have one, but I think someone should make her aware that others notice. Maybe an anonymous note?

Ask post: How can a chocolate girl find fabulous foundation?
Absolutely not Shu Uemura. Lesson learned.

I've had success with custom-blended Prescriptives and regular Prescriptives to a lesser extent.

But, if you can't find a foundation that actually "matches" your skin, pick one that doesn't actively clash or look ashy, and is sheer enough to let your actual color show through. Use a brush (it's easier to get even coverage than with a sponge) and start off with light coverage and build (or... [more]

Ask post: Help with $3500 broadband overage fee due to miscommunication
D. Wino has it. I can't see any point in your story where these charges became your problem. Personally, I'd tell the roommate, "OK, we're going to have to find a way to figure this situation out, because I don't have $3500 and I won't anytime soon," then wait for his response.

The key is maintaining the attitude that A) this is not your problem, because after Nov 30 you won't have to give this situation a second thought, B) you're willing to help him out... [more]

Ask post: Diagnose My Ride
I know very little of cars, but my '93 Volvo 240 recently had issues that sound a lot like these. It took forever to get up to speed, burned through gas, and had the constant low hum of trying too hard. The overdrive refused to engage, keeping the car in 2nd-to-highest gear even at higher speeds.

It turned out that a solenoid had burned out, which (somehow) prevented the car from knowing which gear was needed to properly maintain speed. The part and labor cost between... [more]

Ask post: Best allergy medicine to take for allergy to dogs?
I go with a cocktail of Optivar (eye drops), Nasonex (nasal steroid), and Zyrtec. I take the Zyrtec at night because it makes me sleepy, plus it keeps me from waking up with serious issues. Zyrtec is known as the strongest prescription allergy med there is, followed by Allegra.

I have cats that I'm allergic to, and this regimen keeps me sane.

I'm with kenzie. Lipliner is the key. And not in the outline-your-mouth way, but blending it with whatever color lipstick you have on. The MAC liners are especially good for this--Chestnut, Spice, and Cork are good blenders.Get a nice neutral that looks like it would match your skintone, put on a lipstick that's close to what you want, then go over it with the side of the pencil. If it looks too harsh, go over it with a lip brush.

Ah, I've read that NY courts info, but just when I think I totally get it, Section 65 confuses me again.

Also, I'm not thrilled with the idea of having to go the the courthouse (esp. seeing Sec. 65), which, on top of being $65, I've heard can take hours (esp since I have the DMV, Passport Office, etc. to look forward to already).

Oh NY, how you love to make life easy. (From what I gather, the "New Surname" line isn't on the majority of states' Marriage Certificates.)

Just so I fully understand, if I haven't legally changed my name, how did I change the name on my SSN? Is that what they mean by adoption through usage?

Wryly: they won't.

Thanks for your help everyone.

And not that I'm trying to "evade justice," and not go through with the civil court name change, but what would happen if I didn't? There don't seem to be many obstacles in the way of me changing all of the other documents. How, in the future, might my ass be bitten?

Thanks again, everyone.

When I got married, I asked the Dept. of Records specifically if I'd have to go to court to get my name changed later, and I was assured I wouldn't. That, plus advice from wedding websites that didn't take into account local legislation, caused me to figure I was covered. I'm glad I noticed there might've been a legal oversight, lest I run into problems at a point in time when I don't need any more problems.

So I will... [more]

Also the Living stores (Living on 7th, 5th, and Smith) -- same aesthetic, though (seems to be) more mass produced.

Ask post: Dreadlock removal. Help!
3 suggestions:

1. Go to a beauty supply store that specializes in Black hair care products and buy a product called Better Braids Un-Braid. It uses a) salicylic acid to break down gunk that might be holding the mat together and b) glycerine as a lubricant. I used it to remove leftover knots/mats caused by braids that I'd had in for months. It worked wonders. Spray it in, saturating the hair, let it sit for a few hours (or overnight), then get to... Not that this has anything to do with the topic, but if you put quotes around "intents and purposes" and "intensive purposes" the proper one wins out. (Let's keep our faith in humanity intact for at least a while longer.)

That to say, I think that in many instances, Google is perfectly valid for usage checks.
