Rules to Live By
"11. The Golden Rule is the greatest moral truth. If you don’t believe in it, at least try to fake it."
I find the Golden Rule to be self-centered and inconsiderate. Rather than treat people the way you would like to be treated yourself, it's much better to treat people as they would prefer to be treated. Different people, especially those from different cultures, have different standards of behavior, and different preferences.... [more]

Silhouette pirouette
OK, after several minutes of swearing that it could not go counter-clockwise, I finally figured it out.
I covered up everything but the the very bottom of the shadow, where there's just a foot moving from right to left. Then I decided whether I wanted the shadow foot to pass in front of the shadow leg or behind the shadow leg. Then I looked away, and I looked back.
With these steps I can make her rotate in either direction. Then I just uncover her. And it sticks.

I can't believe its not [strike]butter[/strike] photograpy!
I like how he tries to split hairs between photorealism and photography.
From TFA
"The reason photography does not qualify as art is that the process removes the filter of the human mind as an interpretative element. Although photography requires technical skill, in the final analysis it is only a mechanical recording of reality."
The human mind is not involved as an interpretive element in photography?... [more]

Norman Rockwell reconsidered
I would trade a year in the fifties for 10 years in the morally toxic cesspool that is our current society at the drop of a hat. And now this English professor wants to taint some of the images that remind me of a much better time.
--HuronBob
I don't see the 50s as morally that much different from today, really. Take a look a Marilyn Monroe's "Gentelman Prefer Blondes" (1953), and expecially Marilyn's speech near the end. That's... [more]

Whoops. Sorry. I conflated two ideas and communicated poorly. The example of Marilyn's cynical speech was meant to show that the 50s weren't any more innocent than today.
For my counterpoint to "moral cesspool," I meant to use the same movie, but in a different way. Basically, my point was that a sex-comedy in the 50s isn't really any different from a sex-comedy in the '00s in terms of content. They only differ in terms of style. I mean "Gentleman Prefer... [more]

How do I get hotter water sooner?
I had this happen to me in a couple of apartments. What was happening was the the hot water heater would switch off to conserve energy, and the water in the tank would cool overnight.
My solution was to run the hot water for a brief period of time, and then turn it off. It took the same amount of time for the water to get hot, but I wasn't wasting the water in the meantime.

Lots of fruit and water. Wash carefully everytime you take a dump. Personally, I'm a fan of Proctofoam-HC, although all hyrdocortizone products are pretty much the same though.

Close, but backwards: Here's an except from man chmod:
0400 Allow read by owner.
0200 Allow write by owner.
0100 For files, allow execution by owner. For directories,
allow the owner to search in the directory.
It's
4 = read
2 = write
1 = execute.

Hmm.... I never really say it out loud, but in my head it sounds something like [kəmɑ:d] (hurray for IPA!).
I know in my heart that the 'ch' comes from "change" but something about the word demands a harder onset.

Comfort Women
I think Japan should just apologize again, and then pass a resolution asking the U.S. to apologize for slavery again. Then everybody can pass a resolution asking Germany to apologize for the Holocaust again, Spain can come out of the blue and apologize for the Conquista without anybody having to ask, and we can all decend into a political spiral of ancestral guilt.
That'd be fun.

So, who's got wood for my sheep?
Sheep horde strategies usually do well for me. Resource control is important in Settlers, and there's less competition to control sheep, but the sheep port is just as good as any other 2:1 port. Besides, "everybody loves sheep. Sheep go 'baa.'"

Are Best Buy employees misrepresenting the Product Replacement Plan?
The general rule of thumb is: Never buy an extended warranty for anything other than a laptop. Laptops break frequently, and companies will actually fix them, regardless of how they broke. An extended warranty on any other product is just throwing money away. The cost of the warranty is much higher than the expected value of repair.

What's that smell?
Bollywood puts out some horrible schlock and some truly amazingly good works, same as Hollywood, Japan's animation industry, the video game industry, the american music industry, book publishing, or any other entertainment industry.
Each work is different and should be judged on it's own merits. Hating an entire industry (or any group as diverse) is just stupid. If you applied the same philosophy to people, you'd get in a lot of trouble.
That... [more]
