What's the name of this mental illness?

A couple of months ago, I read an article about a very rare illness primarily affecting men which caused them, among other things, to hurt themselves - sometimes quite seriously. Does anyone know the name of this disorder?

Eerie art

About a month ago I saw an exhibit at Le Palais de Tokyo in Paris that included tree-like sculptures set around big, white, globe-shaped lights. Does anyone know the artist's name?

Powerpoint problems

We made a powerpoint presentation on a Mac and sent it to a number of people both in the US and abroad. Most people are reporting difficulties with the formatting - text spilling over onto pictures, etc. What gives?

One of these things is not like the other...

Has anyone else ever encountered jeans with one "misaligned" leg (i.e., the seams seem to twist around)? What's this all about?

Professional Discipline

Upon googling a doctor I just made an appointment with, I discovered he was convicted of 2nd degree aggravated harassment. What does this mean given that it was listed on a page of professional discipline cases?

Salvaging my Swatch

I have several Swatch watches that have all lost a small piece of glass set in the knob used to change the time. Can this be replaced? I've been to several Swatch stores that have told me they can't fix this. What about a jeweler?

Doing my homework

I could offer excuses, but I won't. I'm unacceptably uninformed about the presidential hopefuls. Are there any good sites/articles offering summaries, breakdowns and/or analyses of the candidates' views/opinions on key issues? I'm primarily, but not exclusively, interested in the Democratic candidates.

How can I find good quality classical recordings?

How can I find a good/widely-respected/well-received recording of a given piece of classical music? I know such a thing as "the best recording" doesn't exist in most instances, so I'm just looking to make sure I get a good quality recording.

Why didn't I think of that!

I want to find the name of a company I heard about on NPR. They sell framed words made out of photographs of things that look like letters.

Name that Tune

I keep seeing a music video on MTV Europe in which two people are walking along and cartoon-like images - mostly words - keep appearing and mutating on the t-shirts. What song/group is this?

For academic types...

I don't believe that authenticity exists in any form. What scholars/philosophers/social critics have argued similiarly? Jameson? Derrida? Deleuze?

How do I add a single piece of data to a list of Filemaker entries (1500 out of 4500)? I do not want to replace data, just add.

Dark Ages version of FileMaker Pro

I'm using Filemaker Pro 5.5 and one of the fields is locked, so to speak. It's supposed to have several possible entries/terms but only one pops up when you click on it. I therefore can't search for records with any other terms. Any ideas how to fix this?

Name that scary story for young adults

I'm looking for a young adult collection of ghost/scary stories I read in middle school (1980s). It was illustrated by Edward Gorey and contained a story about a young girl who discovers a creature of some sort living in a quarry near her home. She becomes obsessed/infatuated with the thing and frequently visits it. I remember strong sexual undertones in this story.

Calling all Middle Eastern music buffs...

I'm looking for a Cheb Mami song which makes use, I think, of bagpipes. It's a very danceable song with a catchy chorus and was/is quite popular - I know I've heard it in NY and Cairo.

Office Drama

I'm transitioning from part-time to full-time at my office and until the paperwork is completed, the director has said that I can only work X number of hours per week and that I must give priority to the (evening) hours when he needs me. Right now, I don't have a regular schedule and each week unfolds according to his needs. However, I am regularly given work by other people in the office and there's the rub...

College/Uni Rankings

Does anyone publish a ranking list that combines colleges and universities? I'm interested in seeing how Columbia might stack up (academically) against, I don't know, say, Haverford.

Date converting on a Mac?

Is there a Mac program that converts Christian dates to Hijri dates? An editor in my office said he uses a program called "CALH" on his PC - is there a Mac equivalent?

Is my tapestry ruined?

I purchased a brightly-colored, embroidered tapestry from the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul. It is certainly not an antique, but it is hand-made, delicate and somewhat old. My well-intentioned (but perhaps lacking in common sense) roomate threw it into the washing machine and, needless to say, the colors ran. Is there any way I can restore the tapestry to its former state or at least to some approximation of such? Would a dry cleaner be able to help?

#1 versus #2 pencils

What is the difference between #1 and #2 pencils? I had a set of Geddes pencils that I adored as they never smudged. However, I think I may have wrongly attributed this un-smudgeability to their being #1 pencils. Is there a correlation? And more importantly, can anyone recommend a (really) good smudge-proof pencil?

Sinister goings-on on the Muppet Show. Am I making this up?

I have a memory of some rather sinister goings-on on the Muppet Show. Am I making this up? I recall a guest on the show (possibly Liza Minelli) being attacked in his/her dressing room by something called a "clanger". It happened in the dark and there was possibly more than one. My memory of the clanger itself is of a tall piece of wire bent at the top, something like an upside-down letter "L". Were these actually characters on the show or did I just have an overactive imagination as a child?
