MeFi post: Captain Canuck Legacy
That hyperlink at the beginning is begging for a colon or some sort of grammatical strong pause.

Serves me right for posting at 3am.

MeFi post: Plastique Monkey
People who enjoy this soul-damning garbage need psychological help and must promptly repent and change, giving their lives to Jesus Christ, or else this awfulness will hang around their neck like a millstone at their final judgement.

They will “stand with shame and awful guilt before the bar of God” (Jacob 6:9), have “an awful view of their own guilt and abominations” (Mosiah 3:25) and will have “a lively sense of … guilt, and pain, and anguish, which is like an... [more]

Ask post: i have everything i've ever wanted. why am i not happy?
Ralph Waldo Emerson said, "Rectitude is a perpetual victory, celebrated not by cries of joy but by serenity, which is joy fixed or habitual", which means happiness is not the same as pleasure, but rather peace of mind as result of righteous living.

Said Jesus Christ in John 14:27:

"My peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be... [more]

Ask post: Give my great new hard drive a better body.
It wont work. Even if you both have the same filesystem and the same os, your drive won't read properly in her system because of different hardware architectures. I'll assume your pc is a Pentium 2/3 or AMD 3D Now (you never said), while your roommates pc is a likely P4 class. Your data won't jibe with the new arch.

It may be readable if you drop your current drive in as a secondary drive, but it'll be unstable as all heck and the data will inevitably corrupt.

Ask post: Uncovering the "human side" of historical figures
Lots of interesting answers thus far. Sara Anne, Quietgal and others also deserve best answer recognition, but due to my own idiosyncratic nature I myself do not fully understand, I chose others instead.

Thank you all, and I hope more is coming (but let's lay off Ghandi for awhile... sheesh ;) )

And to answer amro's question: My teenage daughters say I can be annoying (big revelation there), hence this list to make me feel a bit better (as jayder identified).

However, I can see the list being ripped off by some print publication (my guess is Maxim or Stuff) or by a web portal ala Yahoo or MSN. I've seen it before.

Ask post: Landlords Screwing Seattle Tenants
Some ideas to consider, in adjunct to the other excellent suggestions in this thread:

Should you find yourself out on the street (been there, done that) consider giving the cats to the SPCA while you figure things out. You can of course collect them later, and they will charge you a small fee.

Life is going to be rough for awhile, but you need to step back and try not to feel each and every blow so much.

Ask post: A married friend hit on me. Why can't I stop thinking about him?
Married friend? Friend?!

No decent, loyal person would behave in this manner. The actions you described reveal an untrustworthy and immoral person not capable of honoring a friendship, let alone his marriage vows.

Stay away from him or you and other will get hurt.

Your form must be off on the crunches, because you should be feeling an unbearable burn in the abs after 15-20 reps. Speak to a personal trainer (who is in good shape) about how you can improve the quality of your crunches and your results.

Ask post: Janie's got a gun! How do I disarm her?
Slap his gun away to the side and lunge towards him, driving the top of your skull into his chin as hard as you can. A punch (or any type of jarring impact) to the chin is the surest and easiest way to ring a guy's bell. It's boxing offence 101.

But keep moving forward - you want him off his feet. Trip him up and tackle him down to the ground, but always moving forward until he's on his back. Hopefully your skull hard to the chin and the back of his skull smacking the... [more]

Ask post: How to become less emotionally dependent?
Webster defines love as the “unselfish, loyal and benevolent concern for the good of another; an affection based on admiration, benevolence or common interests”

Based on this definition of what love is, I suggest you actively go out and ease the suffering of people around you, in whatever capacity you feel comfortable. Lose yourself in the service of others and you will discover how valuable a person you are.

My heart goes out to you. You must be exhausted mentally, physically and emotionally. It also sounds like you're suffering from Postpartum Depression (also known as "New Mother Syndrome").

Take no blame for your feelings. Give yourself credit and lot's of allowance as you bear the great weight of depression. You are suffering and you need help and understanding. And if you can muster it, rejoice, because you are a mother who gave life!... [more]

Page Hamilton feels compelled to cuss on his latest album, and we can't have that.
posted to Ask Metafilter by rinkjustice at 6:27 PM on August 18, 2006
Out of curiosity, why do you need to do this?

“The foolish and wicked practice of profane cursing and swearing is a vice so mean and low, that every person of sense and character detests and despises it” --George Washington

... it seems to me that the context of the words would be just as bad, would it not?

It's not always context. Sometimes it's poor choice in words.

Shouldn't you just deprive them of the entire song?

Yes, many times the song isn't salvagable.

Stevia: it doesn't have the caloric footprint of table sugar yet it's 250 times sweeter. South American's have been using it for 2000 thousand years with no adverse affects.

In fact, it's reputed to have heathful properties.

I've read Spanish Conquistadors of the Sixteenth Century sent word to Spain reporting South American natives used leaves of the wild stevia shrub to sweeten herbal tea since "ancient times". I also specifically reading it being "2000" years of usage (not "2000 thousand") but I can't find the source online so it's likely print where I read it.

Ask post: Want to have a picnic today with my kids. Is it too late to schedule it?
The legal process is slow, and from my experience the legal system favors the mother and devalues fatherhood. Regardless, that can't stop a well-meaning and loving father from continuing a realtionship with his kids. I suggest corresponding with them via snailmail. If you have a child who still likes to be read to, buy two copies of a children's book and mail one copy to the child. Then over the phone you can read the story and your child can follow along.
