Ask post: Take this Job and Shove It?
A job is a job. Build your experiences and resume' from each one....spin it positively and you don't need to worry about the length of employment as much. You've got plenty of time to find the kind of job that you enjoy.

How does your boss come to the conclusion that you are not arriving on time? Is he seeing you walk in and then looking at his desktop clock to verify? Is he seeing you log into an IM client and then verifying?

This bit of information is good to know, because it helps in the development of the communication strategy needed to get him off your back :P

I can't offer advice in place of a doctor, but I do recommend that you *not* soley consult with one doctor. If your insurance policy can cover it, get second opinions...try to find another very knowledgeable gastrointerologist in your area.

I personally have been dealing with an illness that has been very hard to diagnose, and am finding that by branching out to different doctors, you'll get very different views and opinions on what is happening....it's made me lose... [more]

Two words: Let go.

If you don't know what I mean by that, well...don't think about it too seriously....instead of reading books about living the happy life, rent a movie entitled "What About BoB?" and watch the part where Bob stays the night and gets over his fear about death.

Much more entertaining in my opinion.

Sure there's other ways to address this kind of anxiety, but I think by simply training yourself... [more]

Ask post: Simple music machine for kids?
With a MIDI keyboard you have lots of versatility, and can play standalone or hooked up to a PC/laptop

Synthpad drum sets are also nice and many are MIDI capable (it also has a nifty volume control where real ones don't :P

I'm guessing tho, since they haven't really gravitated towards a particular instrument yet, go with the simple midi keyboard first then see which sound they like the best for help in picking out future (more costly) instruments.... [more]

Ask post: Help me make a PC safe
AVG is fine, Microsoft Defender is ok as well to run along side it.

The root of your question however can also be addressed by educating the user on her browsing habits. Don't install screensavers, don't download or install activeX components unless the site they are coming from is reputable....basically don't install anything before googling it first to see if it contains spyware.

You could also try a download manager with community feedback... [more]

Oh and I forgot to add, there are common places for spyware to reside...they include but are not limited to:

-Startup/Service Items (startup folder under the start menu, as well as Run/RunOnce/Services registry keys, and in some really odd cases, the backwards compatible win.ini....CCleaner, Spybot, and HijackThis can help address these)

If you have a decent connection to the internet from your home, you could try relaying the audio via shoutcast. It's a tad tricky to set up initially, but once configured you'd simply need to know your home IP address. (P.S. although I second Majick's approach...there's a reason why they blocked streaming unfortunately)

This one might not show up on a Google search for "sailing simulator" so I'll link to it here reference: Virtual Skipper 4. It's probably one of the more visually appealing ones, although from Google there are some that get into the complex details a bit more. Virtual Skipper is made by the same devs that created the Trackmania series.

This might be something only I have done (hard to imagine...but I didn't find another reference via google) You can easily make flying contraptions out of fast food fry baskets. Well linux is not incredibly simple, but I've found the Trinity Rescue Kit to be very handy for a number of things including virus scanning. It is usable on a CD, althrough I was able to get it bootable on a 4GB flash drive as well (made two partitions, a hidden 100mb fat16 for Trinity, the rest on a normal fat32 for routine file storage). This might be one of those cases where eHarmony could be useful. It tends to be more focused on personal values than most other dating sites. But if online dating isn't your thing, then I'd just continue to be as open as you can without giving in to other belief systems if you honestly don't share them. Not every girl you meet will have as strong of an issue about religion as the one you've recently dated, so just keep at it.

Reason comes pretty darn close to the real thing, but afx114's comment is spot on about the 808. I'd stick with Reason for now, simply because you can emulate an entire rack for a fraction of the cost....but continue saving up for an 808...if you're lucky enough you'll find one that's being let go for a good price.

I'd also keep an encrypted thumbdrive (keychain, always stays on person etc) with copies of the files as a backup.

Drive encryption is the way to go. With your option 1, it doesn't address the drive being removed and mounted in a different system where 'ownership' could be forced to a new user. Options 2 and 3 sound good however.

As for lo-jacking, you could always take it a step further and try this method recently posted on the blue ;)... [more]

You might be friends, but a renter/rentee relationship should still stay professional and respectful. But I wouldn't make this a sudden decision, instead give her about three months notice...you haven't been upfront with her so far so it would be unfair to spring this on her all of a sudden.

Back on topic a bit, I just wanted to expand on what was mentioned about a bird's eyesight. Not only do birds see certain things very clearly, they also are tuned into higher wavelengths of the visual spectrum. They simply see the world differently than we do.

I'm not a specialist so this is just my best guess, but I do think it is very likely that the newer seeds reflect UV rays in such a way that attracts these different birds. A more dramatic example is how larger... [more]

Ask post: Why can nothing go faster than the speed of light?
Firstly I think this wikipedia article may help answer the bulk of your question, especially on the differences between general and special relativity. (General relativity allows FTL travel, but with theoretical anomalies)

When you take into account that everything is moving, there is no basis really on what "perfectly still" means. When an object moves near the speed of light within our reference frame, it usually causes odd anomalies when observed. If... [more]

That made me think of this thought experiment: If you are traveling in direction X just a fraction shy of lightspeed (99.99999_%), how would a another vehicle be perceived if it is travelling at the same speed in the opposite direction? What would happen when the differential between these referential points is faster than light?

Now imagine instead of vehicles we are talking about the entire known universe and the relation of galaxies to one another. Could it be... [more]

Shoutcast is another Winamp related plugin that's been around for the better part of a decade and still works great (will take a little extra configuration to set it up for analog input but should work like a charm once going...the only thing to consider with streaming audio is there will be a buffer latency of about 1-5 seconds usually)

It all depends on how much infrastructure is left over after the event. If there's still the ability to generate electricity, etc.

It's very likely that communication would return to the old sneaker method (traveling to location...making note of settlements...establishing new rudimentary trade routes, etc).

Those left over with enough education in technology would be able to help bring the remaining civilization back up to speed, but I would... [more]

Well since the wording changed on the original question you can ignore my crazy talk about trade routes, settlements, and rebuilding civilization. The original question was worded more as if this was about a post-apocalyptic event with hardly any survivors. This new one reads more like the event is localized, similar to events like Katrina, which means that support and communication infrastructure would come into play from outside the affected area as well.

For businesses, depending on the size and type of work it ranges from $60 - $80/h and is usually a value that is bartered on mentally when I assess the job's complexity.

This is probably what you don't want to hear, but you should consider consulting with remediation experts. Mold spores can deeply embed themselves into porus material and can stay dormant for years. Ask post: Balance in MMO Economies?
In its simplist form. The goal in MMO economies is to create and remove resources in the game at a balanced rate. This is on top of trying to make it feel believable and enjoyable within the context of a game (doesn't have to be perfect...and on the flip side no one would enjoy playing through periods of severe inflation or deflation other than the die-hard economist types).

About the only thing ATITD has that Eve doesn't is a deep crafting system; it's been a while since I've played Eve but as far as I know, advances in manufacturing only really get you reductions in build time or resource usage.

There's plenty of video editing tools out there that will do this easily. I'm a big fan of Adobe Premiere (even though it's a tad buggy at times). You can also use a classic like VirtualDub. Here are the steps usually involved:

- First thing you need to do is decode/decrypt the DVD into a usable format. (DeCSS is where it all started)

Ask post: Can podcast MP3s be made louder?
Just want to 'nth the recommendations for better headphones or using normalization over amplifying. The problem with amplifying is you'll need to stay below volume peaks otherwise you'll get a lot of distortion artifacts. In your case normalization should be pretty much the same as amplifying (as it's going to bump the volume up in roughly the same way) but the philosophy behind the term normalization is slightly different as it attempts to bring all of your audio files to the same volume...
