Jane Smith lives in 3A and everyone knows it
In both of the buildings that I've lived in, the postman as put a label on the inside back of my box. Most of these banks of mailboxes open and slide forward so the mail person can stick the mail in from the top... they can see the label, but no one else can unless your mailbox is open.

Enough is enough! I have had it with these mf'ing guitars on this mf'ing plane!"
My bf took his guitar with him on our last three trips together (in the last 18 months). He had absolutely no trouble taking in through security and onto the plane. Once was on Jet Blue, and the other two times were US Air. I think we were on 737's/ Airbus. On our last trip about 3 weeks ago, our connecting flight to the tiny airport in my hometown was on a Dehaveland Dash. This is a smaller prop plane with very limited overhead compartments. He did have to gate check the guitar at that... [more]

I don't want my picture took!
I know that you aren't feeling great about your looks, but I'll give you an alternate take. You have done some thing really great... you've had a book published! This is a notable endeavor... and the dream of many people. But it's also the kind of thing that people put off because they are fat or ill, or for whatever other reason makes them feel inadequate.
You, however, have had this success despite your weight and chronic illness. It does take a brave soul to put... [more]

Seeking Facts/Advice on If a 401(k) Withdrawal Became Necessary
I did this last year after careful consideration in order to pay off my student loans. In my case it was advantageous because my student loan holder (the state of TN) was willing to to settle for 70% of the amount if I paid it off in one lump sum. This savings and the savings of future interest was more that the taxes and penalties that I accrued. I am not a tax or retirement specialist, I am answered from my experience, and what I was told at the time. YMMV.

The Secret Commonwealth are a long laboring Nashville celtic band with lots of songs about autumn or evoking autumn.
Specifically: Scarecrow Walkin, Autumn Wind, Frost on the Pumpkin, and Samhein Feis. (You can listed to some of these on their MySpace page).

How to heal a sunburn?
After several blistering burns as a child (hey, it was the 70's), I have two home remedies that I remember working- yogurt and shredded potatoes. I would lay on my stomach, and my mom would slather either yogurt or shredded potatoes over my back and leave it for 15 minutes or so. I would say pretty thickly... like a quarter of an inch of yogurt or half an inch of potatoes. It really sucked the heat out and reduced the pain. And it was so freaking silly, it always cheered me up.

Seconding that it's a water bug. I'm also in NYC, and I see these occasionally. Yes, they do get big (although probably more like 2-3 inches instead of 6 inches). And I agree with milarepa... these things tend to occur as individuals and not as infestations. I had to kill one last week.

The problem is not the condoms, but how they are stored... and this directly relates to your question. I've seen a couple of places in Chelsea where they have a container of these condoms sitting directly by the front window. Fluctuations in temperature, and especially heat from the sun are not good for latex. So I would not pick up any condoms conveniently placed in a window as they may have degraded from improper storage.
But for sure, don't worry what other people... [more]

Interesting grown-up watches
I got my boyfriend this binary watch, and it's pretty cool. It's held up well for the last year, and people are always trying to figure it out. However, I purchased it from the Discovery Store when it was going out of business and paid about $15. I don't know if it's $80 bucks worth of cool.

Help! I found the perfect apartment!
There are some honest landlords out there. Due to eldercare issues, my boyfriend needed to give up his studio apartment in Chelsea where he had lived for 17 years. Rent-stabilized. Incredible location. Walking distance to my office. When he gave his notice, he told the landlord that I was interested in taking over the apartment. The landlord said that was fine... but he would need to check my credit and there would renovations and a rent increase. But he followed the letter of the law...... [more]

For what it's worth... you'll eventually get used to it. I am in the exact same situation, and after 4 months, I barely notice anymore. I've pondered putting those little clear peal and stick rubber bumps (they come with some furniture and cabinets) on the corners of the door frame to see if it helps with the volume without preventing the door from latching.

My boyfriend wore these shoes for about 7 or 8 months. I did not notice any change in his legs or ass. And I look at his ass a lot. The main reason he liked them is that he felt it helped his posture and strengthen his back. But eventually they started bothering his feet.

Complex plastic coke bottles -- what happened?
I can tell you what I remember (very hazily for sure) from going on a 6th grade field trip to the Eastman Kodak plant in Kingsport, TN in the mid 80's. We toured the plastics lab, and one of the things they made there were those two-liter bottles.
The bottle started out looking like a fat test tube of thick plastic (very phallic), but with the normal screw-threaded neck of a two liter. The tube itself was no wide than the neck. Next, the neck was inserted on a metal... [more]

Have you had a sonogram on your thyroid? I have some of the same symptoms you describe... brain fog and fatigue, dry skin, and trouble swallowing (going back 9 months to a year, some even longer). I was chalking the first two up to a mild depression. Then I noticed one side of my thyroid was swollen.

HotToddy and kimdog: How did this feel? My symptoms were very gradual. In fact, I didn't really think that my trouble with swallowing was the clinical symptom "trouble with swallowing". I could swallow just fine... except food would get stuck in my throat occasionally, then more frequently, and now it's on a daily basis. I do have occasional hoarseness too. But there was no sudden onset of symptoms.
And like hot toddy, I was pretty... [more]

Help me avoid pain during my honeymoon
Lube. You can get KY at any drug store. You don't mention if you are using birth control, but if you are using latex condoms, you must use a water based lube (like KY), and not an oil based lube (vaseline or baby oil) or else you will weaken the integrity of the condom.
And like every one else says... explore and have fun. There are lots of things you can do that won't give you pain.

Is $1350 a month reasonable for an apartment on the Upper West Side of Manhattan?
Another vote for too good to be true. Especially if utilities are included. The going rate for 1BR apartments in that area is closer to ~$2000 on the cheap end. Unless this is a short term sublet, and someone is just trying to recoup their rent over a couple of months, I would be very, very suspicous.
But as far as the neighborhood, it's pretty great. One of my favorite restaurants, Indian Cafe, is right there. Very safe, lots of students, lots of amenities, and... [more]

I think it falls in the realm of pun. And I think it would be highly subjective as to whether someone would find it annoying or not. I happen to come from a family and have a boyfriend who does this type of word play frequently. Whether I find it annoying or not depends on my mood.

Are you sure about the square footage? 300 sq ft is tiny. I just moved to a studio with 380 sq ft, and I can't imagine living with a second person, and you're talking about a 1br with only 300 square ft? You'd be lucky to fit a full size bed.

One more thought. If you can ask follow-ups, find out if the 2 BR is a true 2BR or if it has been converted. If it's the latter, there may be temporary wall that can be easily taken down to maximize the space.
