Candy bar cross-section ID quiz
17/20... and I'm sorry, that picture of a Kit Kat was fucked up (I would swear it looked like there was caramel in there), so that point I would totally call into question. For people who love candy, and did well on this quiz, you should check out the book Candy Freak: A Journey Through the Chocolate Underbelly of America by Steve Almond. It's such a great read, and will encourage you to discover the last of strange regional candy companies in existance.... [more]

New York City's High Line
I just moved two blocks away from the High Line, and I am so excited. I remember about 5 years ago the city asked a bunch of urban planners/ artists/ designers to submit their pie-in-the-sky conceptualizations for the space. I most noticeably remember one that reinvented the High Line as a lap pool, and another that utilized the rails to transport some sort of moveable cafe/shop thing. But I can see the influence of these plans trickling into the current design (like the little wading... [more]

The day my mama socked it to the Harper Valley PTA
I am proud to say that the very first concert I ever saw was Jeannie C. Reilly and Tom T. Hall. Some time around 1980, in northeast TN. When I was a teen I shunned country music, but it's crept back into my life over the last decade. Classic country that is. It's a shame that so many of the greats are dying off.

Chris Crocker, "internationally-recognized icon."
I'm interested in Chris Crocker because he is from my home town. And I appreciate how difficult it can be to grow up there, especially as a gay kid. I wasn't gay, but one of my best friends is and at 36, he still hasn't come out to his family. So I give him kudos for leveraging his personality in a public venue to create... something- celebrity, infamy, or whatever you want to call it. I just hope he can keep enough of this capital to establish a sturdy platform for his adult life.

Rim Shot
My ex-boyfriend's father, who was an advertising executive in Nashville, discovered Jim Varney and had some role in creating the Earnest character for Pet Milk commercials that were his big break. I remember him telling me that Varney was either really cool, or a complete asshole, but I can't remember which it was. I have to say, I quite enjoyed Ernest Goes to Camp. Guilty pleasure.

Book Scavenging in Manhatten
It's the same at my building, Bookhouse. We have a bookshelf in the laundry room that always has a revolving stock. I just took down two shopping bags full of books that I've weeded out as I prepare for a move. I've gotten incredible things from that shelf... there must be an editor in out building because I've found numerous uncorrected proofs for books that eventually go on to be best sellers. I've read many things months before anyone else has ever heard of them.... [more]

Hippies Bummed
I wasn't there in '69 (being not born yet), but my bf and I did drive out there in May of this year. The blight on the general area was striking: its a beautiful part of the country, but the economic downturn in the area is apparent. The new Bethel Arts Center (the actual site of the 69 concert) is super swanky, in stark contrast to how most people think of Woodstock. The field is still very recognizable, though. It's weird going out there... there's virtually no signage or reference to... [more]

Peter Crowley, who ran the club from 75 to 81 and did most of the booking, has a MySpace page. His blog makes for some interesting reading. I moved to NYC 20 years too late, but made a pilgrimage to the site soon after I moved. As I stood on the corner lost in my rock and roll day dreams, Ric Ocasek walked by.

Latte it Forward?
Just another person to poke holes is this (and I also thought I had seen it on Snopes). I don't think it could have happened because I can guarantee at least one of those cars was making a coffee run for the office. So they weren't buying $4 worth of coffee, they were buying $20 worth of coffee. If the person in front of them on the chain willingly paid for that, I'm sure it wasn't without exclaiming a few choice words about trying to be nice under his or her breath.

Nice cash and prizes, buddy!
About 15 years ago, there was a flasher terrorizing women at a remote park near a lake in my hometown. When they caught him, it turned out to be my high school Geometry teacher. He was the kind of guy that kids ran roughshod over- superglued his door shut, had parties in class, etc. I guess this was how he released his "frustrations".
I've also had this happen to me in a parking lot.

I bet it's true. I've had unparalleled service from Zappos. Just last week I placed an order at 7:30pm, and they were at my door at 5pm the next day. They also called me once to say that the shoes I had ordered were the last pair in stock, but they found a flaw in the pre-ship inspection, so weren't sending them. Rather, they had already refunded my credit card and e-mailed me a $15 coupon for my next purchase. They are based in Kentucky. Southerners are like that.

The house cat (Felis catus) was domesticated in the eastern Mediterranean c. 3000 years ago. Notable predators, cats threaten native birdlife and other fauna, especially in island... [more]

My younger, 13-year-old sister is having a slumber party for her birthday, and invited three or so of her 13- to 14-year-old girlfriends to our house. Shortly after, "Sara's" mother suggested that my sister's party should be held at "Tammy's" house. Why? Because Tammy has a single mother. I had the opportunity to correspond with Buck Angel and work with him on (non-porn) project. I found him very down to earth. While enthusiastic about his porn career, he was a bit reluctant to be an icon of the FTM community. In fact, he's gotten quite a bit of blow back from the transgender community. But over all he is a very approachable, interesting guy.

Another huge fan of A Wrinkle in Time, and her other young adult books like A Ring of Endless Light and Dragons in the Water. I was lucky enough to hear her speak at a local college when I was 12 or 13. I met her afterwards, and she signed my copy or AWIT. I was a little bit in awe, and remember her as a tall, stately woman with a deep sense of passionate calm about her. She signed my book "To Kimberly, Tesser Well".... [more]

I was born in 1973, and we used to sing this song in my public elementary school Music class in rural East TN in the early 80's. Probably because all of the books and albums were from the 60's. We also rocked out to Woody Guthrie, the Beatles, and Ella Jenkins. Siftin in the Sand, anyone?

Thoth is my favorite performer in the city, and I've seen him three times already this summer. My friend and I talked to him for a while after one of his performances, and he is far less "crazy" seeming one-on-one than his works and writing would imply. Okay, I'm a little freaked. My aunt lives in that area, and I can't get in touch with her, nor has any of my family heard from her. I was only able to get through by phone half an hour ago (after an hour and a half of "all circuits busy"), and now the phone just rings and rings. Just finished The Book Thief. It's one of the more moving books I've read; I found myself quietly weeping on the train. It's inventive but not overly contrived. And surprisingly, it's considered juvenile fiction.
There are many books that I've read in the last year on here (I think I've read about 50% of the total).
