Ask post: Belgian Beer Road Trip
Another must visit bar in Bruges is De Garre - there is a very detailed review of bar and the beer (with photos) here. The house beer is 11% and you can only have three glasses of it. I've had two and it had a slightly stoned, slightly hallucinogenic effect - very odd! You can visit the Halve Maan (formerly Straffe Hendrick) brewery in Bruges, but De Garre is better...... [more]

Ask post: Scotland-a-go-go Land
National Express is the best site for finding cheap tickets for anywhere in the UK. Once you've entered your journey details and dates there is a Lowest Fare Finder that works out best options - cheapest advance tickets are £29 return (yes really!). You can sign up to get an email when booking opens (3 months in advance).

Sorry, that should have said cheapest train tickets. National Express used to be just a coach company but have now branched into trains too... Its actually £28 return, I can't add up, either.

Ask post: How to find holiday accommodation accessible by public transport?
Thanks, but this wasn't isn't really what I'm after - I want to choose where to go on basis of what's accessible by public transport rather than the other way round, so am looking for examples along the lines of the ones I've posted. It needs to be somewhere accessible by public transport, because I don't drive, so renting a car is not an option. Cities are easy, of course, so the challenge is somewhere that is out of the way but does have some sort of reasonably frequent way of getting about.... [more]

Ask post: Do you grok my eureka moment?
Threshold concepts

Two academics, Meyer and Land, have written several articles about this and there is a link to a report here. They describe it a threshold concept as "...akin to a portal, opening up a new and previously inaccessible way of thinking about something. It represents a transformed way of understanding, or interpreting, or viewing something without which the learner cannot progress.... [more]

Ask post: Paris Vacation
Picasso Museum is great and there are lots of nice cafes in the area around it. Learn some basic phrases before you go - in my experience, making no effort at all to speak the language doesn't go down too well in France...

Ask post: Any recommendations for good lower alcohol wine?
I'm researching online at Berry Bros and Rudd as lots of the other online wine sites don't give the ABV. Prices range from £10 to £200+... Have tried places locally but not a huge range of German wines (market in UK still recovering from the Liebfraumilch years, maybe) and those in the lower ABV are in same price range.

Apparently French law forbids any fermented grape-based drink containing less than 8% alcohol from calling itself wine, but not aware of similar laws in other countries?

Ask post: What unusual/interesting/fun/unmissable things can I do while living in central London?
Sir John Soane's Museum is within walking distance in Lincoln's Inn Fields - its an 1830s house preserved with a huge collection of unusual things that he gathered during his lifetime. Entry is free - and while you're there check out the Inns of Court - Middle Temple includes the Church (as featured in the Da Vinci Code) and the Hall was where Shakespeare staged the first performance of Twelfth Night. The Hidden London website also has some good ideas for unusual places to visit.... [more]

Ask post: Where I can I get a counter thingy for a powerpoint slide?
Thanks for suggestions so far, but no one in my office knows VBA, don't have a programmer, don't know to create an animated GIF or QT movie or Flash show or have access to a webserver (and I was hoping to use it tomorrow!) Transitions sounds more promising although haven't used these before either... Will check this out, but any other lower tech, quick solutions very gratefully received...

Ask post: How to extend my run?
I find that something seems to kick in after about 20 minutes running: lactic actic/endorphins/boredom? where I can just switch off and just run without thinking about it. I think I read some sort of physical explanation for this in a magazine but try and get past the 20 minute barrier and see if it works for you. Running with someone else can definitely help with this and I find running by distance (e.g. to a particular landmark) rather than by time works better. You haven't said if you run... [more]

Ask post: Anchovy, Anchovy, the Flower of Fish
There is a recipe in Jamie Oliver's latest book - Jamie's Italy - for an anchovy pangrattato. Whizz together a slice of bread, a tin of anchovies, a clove of garlic and some fresh red chilli then fry in a pan until it turns into brown breadcrumbs. He uses it on top of a cauliflower risotto but you can use it to liven up just about any dish with a delicious spicy salty flavour. In the programme that went with the book he says that this was orginally poor man's parmesan...

Ask post: Reverse price auctions
Ebay works on HIGHEST unique bids, not on LOWEST unique bids. Someone else linked to the Auction-Air site before
http://www.auction-air.com/reverse_auctions/index.html?LHcol_txt
and this explains the rules more clearly. It is not a scam if there is a limited number of bids e.g. for a £200 ipod you could have a maximum of 100 bids at £2 and the seller would be guaranteed £200 back plus whatever the bid is. The lowest unique bidder gets the ipod for their bid plus the... [more]
