MeFi post: John Prine
I was introduced to his music at Christmas, a couple years back. My brother in law was playing Sam Stone in the background. It was an interesting Christmas.

I'm at work, so I don't know how good the clip is.

One of these days I plan to read some Doc Savage. Right after, those other hundreds of books in the queue.

MeFi post: God Emperor of STFU
I think the problem with Dune is that its less of story and more of a philosophical screed. Now don't get me wrong, I love (the first 6 books of) the Dune series, but as the literary aspects leave much to be desired. The prequels are bad fanfic which lacks the interesting philosophical bits but leaves in the shitty storytelling.

As for new series that didn't suck, the first book in R. Scott Baker's Prince of Nothing didn't suck. More philosophical fantasy. I have it on good authority that the Reality Dysfunction series is popular with all of the physicists that I know. I found his level of detail off-putting, but to each their own.

In addition to the mostly excellent A Case For Conscience mentioned above, Mary Doria Russell's duology The Sparrow and Children of God are good. More on Jesuits, first contact and forgiveness.

MeFi post: Ice Cream Man, On My [Friggin'] Street ...
Back when the Exorcist was being re-released, we got in to the preview screening the night before it opened. As we were watching, the film sort of disintegrated before our eyes and we all went outside to smoke while they fixed it. At like 1:30 in the morning, off in the distance was the ice cream truck playing its hellish "Hello" song. I fucking hate the ice cream man.

MeFi post: God is in the details
Way back in 2002 I was an overnight at Kinko's. We had this young guy who'd come in regularly to print out his manuscripts, nothing exciting it happened all the time. So we start talking and it comes out that I'm going to seminary in a couple of weeks. He got that gleam in his eye. (Anyone who's ever accidentally tripped an off-kilter reigious person knows that gleam) He starts going on and on about his book series and how its going to be used to spread the Word of God and on and on. Pretty... [more]

Like many others here I owe a large part of who I am to this man. My love of history, language, and myth were encouraged in ways that I can't begin to describe. I still remember reading through one of the appendicies of the 1st edition DMG and learning new Greek and Latin words. I'm still stunned.

MeFi post: But Would They Let Saint Mary Officiate?
They do seem to be rather atavistic:

"The Activities Association said it is considering whether to take action against the private religious school. St. Mary's Academy, about 25 miles northwest of Topeka, is owned and operated by the Society of St. Pius X, which follows older Roman Catholic laws. The society's world leader, the late Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre, was excommunicated by Pope John Paul II in the late 1980s." from the first article.

Rocky indeed.

MeFi post: "It is a private world that continues to grow."
So, I was in Eugene OR and feeling pretty bummed out. I decided to take a walk and see what I could find. I wandered into a used gaming shop across the way from a fantastic used bookstore. I was browsing a selection of mid 90s D&D books when I hear from the back of the store: "Dave*, We figured out how to make breasts!"

My curiosity piqued, I wandered back that way. It seems that two teenage girls had figured out a way to make some breasts for an... [more]

MeFi post: reasons to be angry
I'm angry that she doesn't know how to use the word fundamentalist. One who believes in the fundamentals. This is easiest to demonstrate with religion, (wrong and an incorrect interpretation of scripture I'd argue, but that's beside the point) but not solely related to it.

I'm not sure that this is any different than any of the Children's Illustrated Bibles that the Catholic kids nextdoor were forced to have. Its just Zondervan trying to capitolize on a new market.

I mean, every time I'm in Borders there's always some kid sitting on the floor paging through some Manga.

I'm no big fan of Marilyn Manson, possibly due to discovering Rozz Williams and Christian Death right before Manson hit big, but the article is just sad. He sounds like a petulant, depressed 15 year old. Which is fine when 15, less so, when 38.

Firas,

Fair enough. How about, in the half a dozen or so albums that I have heard of his, I did not hear anything that convinced me he was more than a dark pop star. His music is alright, but it is crafted to be pop.

stinkycheese,
Janis Joplin is harder than Marianne Faithful because she was from Texas and she died at the magic age of 27.
Johnny Cash is cooler than Lemmy, which I suppose makes him cooler than God.

Also, Mississippi Queen is an awesome song.
