Advice, help, small gift for a friend who needs to change her diet to be a Vegan for dietary reasons.
HappyCow's Boston listing will help you find a restaurant to take your friend to, and stores where she can more easily find vegan products.

Also, one of the most supportive things you can do is just preparing vegan food for any situation where you'll be eating together so she doesn't always have to feel the responsibility of bringing her own food since everyone around her is eating meat/eggs/etc. Another thing would be to inform others who will be preparing food that there's a vegan and encourage them to provide something good (ie. not just whatever random vegetables as a salad).

sad accesspoint drama.
After a little more investigation... the signal shown in inSSIDer seems to return to its high levels as the AP decides upon which antennae to use (the lights on the AP stop flickering like crazy).

The AP was on 6 previously and I moved it over to 7 since there were 4-5 other networks in the building on 6.

Actual stats, by channel:
channel 1: 3 networks, including mine
channel 4: 1
channel 5: 1
channel 6: 6
channel 7: 1, mine
channel 11: 5, including mine
The signals on 11 and 1 seem to be stable.

Switched out the APs. New one in-room is on channel 11, has a similar signal strength graph, though it hasn't yet dropped to the point of losing the connection.

A related question: why might windows choose to switch to a low-power signal when there's a high-power one right in the room? In inSSIDer I can see the signal strength 'wobble' around when I'm connected to that AP, and the others are flat; but XP is choosing to use the lowest-powered signal on the network, which is ... confusing.

Hrm okay. I'm pretty confident that the super crazy drops are due to the AP reconfiguring itself, but it could well be the congestion that's causing it to reconfigure. The APs aren't at their final locations, so perhaps throwing one at the opposite end of the apartment will let me use the channel and everything will be peachy.

Can public transit be reinvented to meet America's needs?
No, much of America's planning is hostile to mass transit options. The solution is not to reinvent public transit, but to stop building residential suburbs and build instead dense cores of mixed residential/commercial, as in the East, as in Europe.
Or hope that places like San Diego burn to the ground in the next wave of fires and is rebuilt with a dense urban center.

Sucky Pedal Disengagement
Falling over happens with cleats, and wearing cleats for routine city riding is kind of silly. I suggest buying Shimano PD-M324's which have a platform on one side and a clip(less) on the other side. I used the platform side of these during a tour especially in shitty city conditions (wet cobblestones, train tracks, etc) and used the clipless side for all the long country riding.

How much to spend on a used bike?
New road bikes: low-end 700-1200$, mid-range 1200-1700$, high-end 1800$+
Under 700$ you're looking at used or often "lower quality" bikes. These bikes will still be able to get you 5 miles, which is a reasonably short commute.

Please can I have a new bike?
You should be looking on gumtree's bicycle section, which is much cheaper than buying new in bike shops. Looking there, it seems like you can get a bike in your price range. Stay away from the 'fixed up' fixed-gears/singlespeeds since they'll be overpriced. You could basically use any bike for the distances you're going. The main thing you need to look out for is the fit of the frame; don't buy anything that feels like you're having to bend over too far, that makes you stand on your tip-toes, or... [more]

If this is a one-off thing, writing a normal html form, then scoring with a simple PHP script would probably be 100 times easier than trying to install/manage moodle, joomla, or any other script.

If you are transferring to another *nix machine, scp from the command line is the easiest. If you need to transfer to windows, and your windows machine is nearby, consider using winscp and initiating the transfer from the windows box.

What is the best way to include the same content on multiple web pages? (e.g. SSI, PHP, Javascript...)
4 ways:
(1) Frames/IFrames. Advantages: Plain html, no server support necessary. Fast (load frame content once). Disadvantages: Ugly, having to write frames-related html.
(2) Javascript. Advantages: can insert text in the page rather than use a frame. Disadvantages: Everything else. Slow, awkward, the wrong way to do it.
(3) SSI. Advantages: Cleaner presentation than frames. Only needs Apache. Fast. Disadvantages: User redownloads the... [more]

Help with saying No to drugs
Absolutely do not get the cops involved. Absolutely do not try to intimidate/force your kids to "behave" with threats of "boot camp" etc. Both of these tactics are pathetic and do not treat your children with the respect they deserve. Using either of these tactics will rightfully cause deep resentment and distrust of you in the future. Your kids' problem probably isn't pot, but rather their pot use probably is a symptom of other issues they have with their living/schooling... [more]

jayder: Legally, a parent has the authority to do these things (call the police, put their kid in 'boot camp' etc), but these laws treat kids/children/teenagers like objects that are unable to make rational decisions. Unless the kids are crazy, then they're still operating on some rational basis. "School is super stressful, I want to not be stressed, pot can make me unstressed." or whatever. Now, from your point of view and the parents point of view, this is a bad... [more]

Looking for bike rides around San Diego
The problem with San Diego is you have to spend all your time getting out of the city. A normal 25 mile loop would be from my old house to my old job. Boo. Plus, pretty much everything is on rather highly trafficked roads.
Riding up the coast is the most logical route from pretty much anywhere in the central city area. The roads are good, the terrain is varied, the ocean looks nice, etc. You can't go west (ocean!), and going south you hit shittily... [more]

How do I rotate images using javascript?
You can easily do this with DOM manipulation. You should target a parent element, like a div or whatever with an id (use getelementbyid), delete its children, then add the necessary anchor and img elements each time you rotate.

Yeah you're a bit obsessive, and your boyfriend is on the other side of things, maybe not obsessive enough, who knows. Explain to him calmly that it makes you uncomfortable and you know that maybe you're overreacting but that it'd make you much more comfortable if he'd wash his hands more regularly and that you'd really really appreciate it. He should at least make a small effort to accommodate you.

How do I get an MFA without a BFA?
I doubt you'll need an undergrad degree, but you should work on making prints to demonstrate your interest and skill to get into grad school. Teaching is rather far off and you'd be better to focus on getting good at printmaking (you can't teach it if you're not really good at it).

Well you don't have to be an expert in all fields to get into grad school. A lot of what grad school is about is getting good at a particular technique/approach. So long as you have a good foundation to work upon, and you show that you're both interested in a specific area and have the diligence to work in/through/whatever it, you should be okay. If you're aiming at teaching, I guess you should diversify while in grad school, but doing good block printing seems a lot harder to me than doing... [more]

Help me pick a web dev language to learn.
I learned Python and Django. PHP is awful and spaghetti-like, even with things like CakePHP. Ruby has perl-like syntax. Rails forces you to do lots of configuration once you step outside the small automagic features. Python made more sense to me and django is way better planned than Rails.

Anyone had regrets about a massive decluttering of their lives?
I got rid of pretty much everything I owned save for a backpack of clothes, a laptop, and a bike. Two and a half years later, I have a little bit more than a backpack full of clothes, a laptop with 2 external drives, 3 bikes, and a bit of camping equipment. The only "regret" I have is that I didn't have space for my art supplies, so I haven't made many nice things in the last few years. But I'm young, and mostly had things from my time in school, not nice inherited trinkets.

To keep it cheap you need to actually travel as little as possible since the biggest costs getting around Europe are from getting around Europe. A train ride across half of Germany cost me 90 euro (a touch under $100), i think.
