MeTa post: Grow the hell up.
I thought the Bellman did a great job of explaining the difference between theft and copyright infringement in that thread -- and he did it in a calm, noncondescending way.

MeTa post: 29: Happy Happy Joy Joy
I listen to the podcasts when I'm out for my postprandial constitutional. The volume levels go UP OH MY GOD PLEASE STOP SHOUTING IN MY EAR and then so low I can barely hear it. Since I'm listening on earphones, it's a bit annoying.

Is there anything that can be done, either at your end or mine, to make the levels more even? I'm using iTunes and an iPod.

MeTa post: OK to email a mefite?
I received an e-mail from a Mefite who lived nearby, and who I'd never met. We went out for coffee. It was enjoyable. I recommend it.

The Bellman is not to be trusted. The Bellman is just bitter that the Corpse moved away from NYC.

SteveInMaine: "I'm getting sick and tired of having my name (which coincidentally is the name of my long departed grandfather who sailed across the Atlantic from Lithuania)..."

"Steve" is a Lithuanian name? Steve Stankevičius? Steve Vasiliauskas? Steve Krancewicz? Steve Stankus?

(My long-departed grandfather also sailed across the Atlantic from Lithuania. But he wasn't named Steve.)... [more]

Turtles -- you might want to lurk in alt.usage.english for a while and see if you like it. I've been an AUEr for a decade. It might scratch your itch.

I'll be there. I love sausage. And beer.

Will anyone have an official Metafilter sign? Or do I get to wander around asking strangers if they're from Metafilter and getting weird looks in return, as I did at the Victoria meetup?

Ah -- very clever, Artw.

I'm going to get there around 5:00, because of the stoopid Sunday bus schedule, so if anyone else is in the neighborhood early, well, there I'll be. (I'll also be leaving pretty early because of same stoopid Sunday bus schedule.) I look like a female Mefite.

We had fun. Not just fun: we rocked. (Bonus extra footage from the Shoreline meetup, because the thumbnails were so frikkin' small that I didn't notice it.)

MeTa post: We've got a network - let's use it!
Despite it being mentioned in a podcast, I didn't get a single e-mail in response to my job post for a babysitter. This is actually preferable than the stack of creepy responses I got from craigslist.

(We still need a sitter, if anyone's interested...)

Can we post jobs that we're not actually in charge of?

That seems weird to me. If the motivation is just "hey, there's a job available for some sort of person somewhere," the list could get mighty long mighty fast.

MeTa post: Thanks for the Catalogs...
Which is better, environmentally speaking: looking at a company's website using a computer and electricity, or looking at a catalog printed on paper?

Honest question, not snark. I suspect the website is better, especially since I already own the computer, but maybe I'm wrong. There are probably too many variables to answer this.
posted to MetaTalk by The corpse in the library at 10:24 AM on April 13, 2008
Honestly, if you've ever owned a car, if you live in more than 500 sq.ft per person residence, or if you average more than 5,000 miles of air travel per year, you are a fucking hypocrite for asking this question.

Oh, shush. I didn't say I was going to take one step that would save the world and wondering which of the two options it should be. I was idly curious about how the two ways of shopping compared, that's all.

MeTa post: Best Answer AWOL?
Grither: "Seriously though, is there a best way to delete my own (stupid) comments?"

I was pissed off recently and wrote an angry comment. I quickly realized I was being stupid, e-mailed the moderators (using the contact link at the bottom of the page), and they deleted it. It probably would've been deleted anyway, come to think of it... but I feel much better for having snitched on myself (Catholic school will do that to you).... [more]
