Ask post: Looking for Glass Milk Bottles near PDX
Swapmeets, flea markets, antique and collectible stores are a great source for genuine milk bottles and they can still be found for 2-3 dollars each if you look around.

Ask post: Air conditioning the outdoors?
As sharkfu mentioned, misting systems are used for cooling outdoor areas here in the desert where real temps can reach over 120 degrees fahrenheit during the summer.

Many indoor areas in the desert are cooled with swamp coolers instead of refrigeration. Using a swamp cooler requires open doors and/or windows in order to achieve the air flow necessary for efficient operation. It was near 115 degrees at my house today and we had every door and window in the house wide... [more]

From Roger Ebert's description of Support Your Local Gunfighter:
The movie ends with Jack Elam standing on the back platform of the next train out of town and telling us how the story turned out. We learn that James Garner did, indeed, marry Suzanne Pleshette, and that the gunfighter of the title is still trying to get his boots off (because, maybe, he is cursed to die with his boots on and hopes to save his life?). And what happens to Elam? "Me? I go on to be a star in Italian... [more]

You can also check out the Blackhawk Slide while you're in Landers.

My wife and I made a day trip to Anza Borrego to see the wildflowers a couple of months ago and enjoyed the drive. Our trip was basically Live Oak Canyon (near Yucaipa) to San Timoteo Canyon to Moreno Valley to Temecula to Borrego Springs to Salton City to 1000 Palms Oasis (a must see) to Desert Hot Springs and then home to our place between Landers and Joshua Tree.... Ask post: they murdered her
Did the dachsund have a cash value? CAlifornia and some other states allow the owner of animals killed by dogs to sue for treble damages in small claims court. It won't restore the loss of a beloved pet, but it goes a long way toward assuring irresponsible owners learn to control their animals.

As a dog lover who has been forced to kill several dogs over the years to protect my livestock, I have nothing but contempt for dog owners who fail to control their "pets".

I can't help with your specific question, but you might want to check the operations of this company. Ask post: kind of like Little Miss Sunshine - all the people + camera equipment - bus + ecological sensitivity
Nthing everyone else re the foibles of the old bus. I owned several of them during the 70s and dearly loved a couple of them but they left a lot to be desired. The fuel economy sucked (15-18 mpg on the road), required lots of maintenance (oil change every 1500 miles and valve adjustments every 3000 miles) and as someone else said, they were horrible in a crash. The bus's primary attribute IMO was it's ability to go just about anywhere.

Although nowhere near as versatile... [more]

Ask post: Can I buy a brand new 5-year-old car?
The vast majority of dealers finance their new car inventory and have to pay interest on each and every new car in inventory each and every month. While their invoice cost remains the same, their actual cost on old inventory keeps climbing until it is sold. This motivates the dealer to kep dropping the price until someone takes his old stuff off his hands.

Every dealer I ever worked for made sure his old stuff was gone within 3-6 months the new model year debut (even if... [more]

You're more likely to have an encounter with a wasp or scorpion in California than Black Widow or rattlesnake. While painful, wasps and California scorpions aren't dangerous unless the victim has an allergic reaction. I stepped on one of these while barefoot in suburban SoCal a couple years ago and it was the most painful thing I've ever endured. The California Cow Killer is usually red but the rest of the description is a good match.... [more]

Ask post: Help me choose an XM Radio receiver
I bought this Delphi receiver for my car a couple weeks ago and love it. The pause feature is a must for me after being spoiled by my DVR while watching TV.
posted to Ask Metafilter by buggzzee23 at 9:45 AM on December 11, 2007
I forgot to mention I hardwired the receiver's output into my car stereo's AUX input for the best sound. A friend uses the antenna adapter and his sound quality leaves much to be desired.

90% of my driving is in the Mojave Desert and/or San Bernardino mountains where terrestial radio is almost nil, so XM has greatly improved my drive-time enjoyment.

A swamp cooler is definitely the way to go. I've lived in the desert all my life and wouldn't part with my cooler. It'll also save you big bucks on your electric bill as a cooler draws a fraction of the electricity used by air conditioning.

Just be sure to remember the secret to effective swamp cooling: Airflow is key, so you need to keep windows and/or doors open and use a big enough cooler to completely exchange the air every 2-3 minutes.
