MeTa post: lolpau
lolcats is like so many other memes, 1 in 1,000 is funny, but when they are funny they are really funny.

Although, myself, I kind of like LJ's cat_macros group since they tend to be able to have a little more freedom with language than cheeseburger.

But damn, I like pictures of cats doing goofy shit. I can't help it.

MeTa post: Has this happened in other threads?
cgc373 - That certainly seems to be the most logical explanation. :) Like I said, I just thought it was... odd.

Yeah, I looked at all his other many posts and comments, and everything seemed pretty normal... except for that one thing.

But all the 54321 stuff makes it make more sense now. :) Thanks folks. My freaky mystery for the day has been solved.

tellurian, for what it's worth, after the 54321 thing was pointed out, I actually quite appreciated that you were able to pull that post off. It was so obvious yet so obscure all at once. Although now I'm feeling a little weird about where all this thread ended up going. Sub-Meta-Talk is strange.

MeTa post: Just 17 minutes

That is kind of creepy, how quickly it got accomplished. Ew.

:) Which reminds me of an incident last week at work. Someone locked their keys in their drawer (it has one of those push in to lock it locks, very odd). She asked if I could get into it. I've never picked a lock in my life, but I had my Leatherman with my tiny but very sturdy eyeglass flat headed screwdriver. And I've read enough about locks online to know the basics of a... [more]

MeTa post: Religious / Political Threads Largely Repetitive
I do believe that many of us, and by that I mean all of us, have noticed it.

I recently pondered this and why I couldn't stop respondingin the threads. While I have not stopped entirely, I have rewritten my own user profile as a reminder of the futility of posting in such threads.

To me, the point of political arguments on MetaFilter or other places isn't to try to change the mind of the person you're arguing with--this happens extremely rarely, if ever--but to convince other people who are reading the thread, and who don't yet have a fixed position on the issue.

So, the point is simply to sway individuals who have yet to form an opinion? Yet most responses are not written with that premise. Most responses are written as... [more]

That's what language is for, and thus, it's what the internet is for.

Is a means of communication actually, itself, communication?

How much of human conversation is meaningful? Sure, we would love to think that all of it is. But you need only go into a bookstore to see how many people go through tremendous efforts to communicate with us in a meaningful way, and how much of that gets through? How much of it is meaningful?... [more]

Damn, I was just thinking how MeTa had been pretty free of this kind of self-wankery lately.

MetaMetaTalk... day-um... it is indeed a big ball of self-wankery. Wait a second... isn't wanking necessarily "self-wankery"?

I am 100% up for a SanFran mefi 10th anniversary meetup. Plus, my birthday is like a day or two before that. W00t for Friday the 13th! Please, no pre-martial teenage sex or I have to put the machete through you. Now where's my hockey mask...

MeTa post: MTU settings = No Metafilter
I've been getting the random hang behaviro pretty much since the server move back in March. Just at home, though, and even that has seemed restricted to only a couple of machines. I've hesitated to post about it (and god knows, I've been tempted numerous times) since I was assuming it was just something crazy on my side that I had yet to figure out.

I tried the MTU change. No luck.

I'm still now getting random hangs, but less than before. I... [more]

I solved mine. Multiple router updates for my old Linksys BEFSR41. Turns out I was several, uh... *coughyearscough* I was behind.

Things seem to be zoom, zoom zoomin' along now.

Caveat: I had to disable MTU, which was also set at the aforementioned 1492.

MeTa post: Metafilter.com, In a Nutshell
I think my enjoyment of the strip was more predicated by my early experiences on telnet BBSes like ISCA, Shadow and Skynet and the infamous and squalid Heinous, where the users all kept well in line with the name of the place.

I enjoyed the artwork, mainly the expressions captured on the faces of the arguers. The bandwidth exceeded bit was the part that I chuckled at the most because it was followed by such an accurate method that most people use to deal with... [more]

MeTa post: 6: Chatting with the father of the permalink
I am happy to hear I'm not the only person out there that doesn't think flickr is the end-all be-all of online photo repositoring. (ah... I love made up words.)

I like Coppermine still. I have only just recently tried picasaweb at google, but that suffers from exactly the same centralized server issue that pb doesn't care for, so that isn't for everyone. (Plus, they recently upped to 1GB for free storage. Of course, for $8 a month I can have web hosting with 300GB of... [more]

I like to drink beer with friends in a brew pub, but I rarely sit at home and just drink a beer. It actually tastes awful to me when I'm not in a social situation, I think because I can fully pay attention to the taste at home.

Somebody! QUICK! Get this man some good beer. It should only take like five minutes since he's practically on top of the best brewing city in the US.

MeTa post: Functional, clear design & intuitive systems would improve MetaFilter
I hear lots of flash is good.

Yeah bay-BEE! I mean what's NOT to love about an entire web board that runs in Flash?! I say... NOTHING IS WHAT NOT TO LOVE! I mean, wow, look at teh sex that site puts out. Ker-zing-oid and ker-flahw-wee kids! Sliced bread went out in the 1900s or there abouts! It's all about the interflashctive ain't it?

MeTa post: C-c-c-combo breaker!

Am I the only one who found the assumptions and the conclusions made by this particular "test" completely tooth-gnashingly annoying?

No, you were not. I was barely able to read the article because of that. Every other paragraph was laden with the assumption "You poor, uneducated schmucks. Wow, I feel so sorry for you. You're so dumb. So unappreciative. Hell, let's get down to it and just take everyone that didn't stop... [more]

MeTa post: Weeee're back
So, am I the only one still having problems this late in the change? (San Francisco AT&T DSL, btw.)

Mac OS X 10.4.9 / Firefox 2.0.0.3 (and other browsers listed below) / AT&T DSL / San Francisco

It seems random whether or not I can get here. Often what I get is the banner and tabs loading at the top and the blue background (or green or grey, depending) and then it just hangs there forever until I stop it and reload. Reload works about... [more]

MeTa post: Make askme more of a reference page?
I for one would love to see examples of successful searches for both ask-mefi and the blue as well. A nice explanatory example showing how to get the best possible results back would be fantastic.

I generally feel like I know how to frame my searches elsewhere, but I definitely struggle with my framing here on metafilter more than anywhere else.

MeTa post: Closed?
Just open up an IRC channel for MetaYammer and let people go in and let their flames burn up about various things and I honestly believe that plenty of folks would get satisfaction from having a metachatty conversation about the types of things that are consistently closed in metatalk. :) Of course, I'm crazy.

MeTa post: The Green Should Be White
Wheeee! I'm late to the party...

Hoora for peacay's comment.

Oh, btw, white web page backgrounds waste energy anyway.

I work with "professionals" and I like the idea that they some of them are so shallow and facile that they wouldn't take advantage of a truly useful resource because it didn't look like something a "professional" would use. Thanks for confirming my on-going negative stereotypes about... [more]

MeTa post: crush racism an sexism forever
I suppose that (1) I know why the person in AskMetafilter is asking: legal issues of inheritance, custody, etc. are exceedingly difficult and complicated for the gay community compared to the straight community - I have co-workers that seek out financial planners and lawyers strictly based on their knowledge of the law and their previous gay couple case experience.

and (2) why the person posting here in MetaTalk is "complaining": because if... [more]

I am actually interested if there was a spike of visits after it aired. :)

*heh* I am quite enjoying these "sites that shall not be named" games, since I am completely out of the loop about which ones they are.

Aw, what about the back room at the Toronado on a Saturday afternoon? :) Whee! Sausage and beerz!

Or the upper bar seating at 21st Amendment. Tons of room up there during the non-baseball season.

The abundance of San Francisco MeFites seems, oddly, to be the reason why meetups don't happen more often.

hahahaha... god, you're right.

(1) Is it on a bus line that my house is on?
(2) Is there parking?

Those two things pretty much wrap up whether or not a SF meetup will ever happen.

Oh, and I'll do Cafe Abir. (We drunkards can sneak across the street to Fly and get more b33rZ.)

MeTa post: Update to (or impact of?) this open thread on the...
The "Compact" group is interesting, but it's not exactly earth shattering. I found it a little goofy that it made the front page of SF Gate.

But it does remind me of my own personal projects that I undertake every now and then. One year I set out not to buy any new computer hardward (except replacement items), not to make a statement about anything but just as a personal exercise in changing the way I think about what sort of personal habits I have developed....
