The set of items linked by blahblahblah are only those on display on the first floor of the MIT Museum (the new Mark Epstein gallery); here's the list of the full collection of Shannon items held by the museum. The Shannon-Thorp wearable computer is currently on display at the Heinz Nixdorf Museum in Paderborn, as part of their exhibit on numbers and gambling.

The Brookline Tab's inane blog is particularly fixated on these. I heard someone giving directions in Cambridge that included "go past the building where the turkey lives" (by the Kendall Square Marriott).

Shock!! Horror!! Some twenty-something librarians are JUST LIKE some other twenty-somethings!!!
Seconding nax above, especially on the salary breakdown; the NYT $51k figure covers the entire career spectrum, including senior administration/management; entry-level, like the folks in the article, is likely to be closer to mid-30s.
Is there a librarian's drinking club in the Boston area?

Chrischris, there was some work done a couple years ago teasing out the explicit connections to adaptations in Cherokee music -
Heth, Charlotte. 1992. Cherokee Hymn Singing in Oklahoma. Festival of American Folklife :95-97. as well as here and here. Somewhere tucked into the back of my Harp is a copy of New Britain with the words written in Cherokee.... [more]

The bridge is usually referred to as the /Harvard/ bridge, or the Mass. Ave. bridge, not the MIT bridge. Anecdotally, this is because MIT students structurally analyzed it and gladly ceded any naming rights, although the chronology doesn't really work out (the bridge was built while the Institvte was still on its pre-1916 Boston campus near Copley Square).
In the 1920s, it was so badly deteriorating that it was referred to as the xylophone bridge; a popular student... [more]

Holy synchronicity, comrade, I just got Comrade Rockstar out of the library yesterday. Some (pretty awful) lyrics and mp3s can be found on this German tribute page. "A Pair of Scissors is particularly horrifying, and I love the earworm-quality "shoobedoo" refrain of Elizabet.

nebulawindphone, I lived in (alas poor departed) Woodward. Change ringing on the carrilon right next door every Sunday morning, plus the occasional fractal/mathematical piece... talk about tintinnabulation!

I just got out of a class Dennett guest-lectured in; he was reveling in the controversy and chuckling over the seven or eight responses supporting him that are scheduled to be published in the NYT.
