No more plastic in my coffee, please.
I have a Bunn. I love it. It has its drawbacks if you're not familiar with it, as Carialle points out. It keeps the water hot continuously so when you make a pot of coffee and close the lid, it will begin to make the coffee immediately, no boiling first. The grind is important because of how fast the water goes through the grounds - this thing makes a pot of coffee in about 3 minutes.
Anyway, I've had three of em over the course of about 20 years and I can't see ever... [more]

college crisis: playing PC games on a mac at college...
Thanks, everyone, for the feedback.
It sounds like the MBP is the way to go, my client has the dough, and I think he's gonna jump.
The reasons for going with a Mac, aside from the ones listed here, are support from both fellow students and Apple (which I understand is pretty good - he's getting Applecare and extended protection), he wants the machine to last a few years (the MBP will, for sure, last a while). He's not so *serious* about gaming... [more]

Pronoiac: Thank you! I listen to the podcast while driving - makes it hard to follow the links but whatever, people swerve out of the way - and having to constantly having to ramp the volume up while Matt is talking and down while Jessamyn is talking gets a little hectic sometimes.

Software RAID Dies: Which disk is dead?
Add-in RAID controllers have a BIOS of their own that you can use. On most controllers, you get the option to press "CTRL-A" for RAID configuration during system boot. In that software, there's usually a list of physical disks with serial numbers, if one fails, look for the serial number on a barcode or label on the physical disk to know which one died.

...and hardware RAID isn't usually seen by the OS, so the Disk Management snap in isn't "aware" of the RAID array's physical disk configuration.

Yeah, toxic, I didn't go far enough there. Dell server RAID cards have an audible alarm that will annoy you to death if a RAID array is degraded for any reason. And you use the server administrator software to manage RAID within windows.

How do I get rid of, then keep MS Office?
Also, do a search for a file that ends in .nk2. Copy that out and save it, and put it back in the same location after the reinstall. It's all the addresses you're typing in the address bar that aren't in your contacts.

Fuck you LH, you have no business coming at me like that.
I've seen Patton Oswalt live, and I walked out after the third time he said the word "fag".
Can I back it up online? No. Do I have personal experience with it? Yes. Now deal with it.

I wasn't trying to thread shit and I am no troll, check my history. I made a throwaway comment about the guy and I stand by it, everyone disagrees, okay, enough said. This is so not worth energy or time to discuss. It happened a while ago, maybe he's changed his tune, maybe he was drunk, whatever. It's totally irrelevant in any case.

Help with saying No to drugs
I smoked a lot of pot in high school, and I failed miserably. Because I was stoned most of the time, I never paid attention in class, never did my homework, and never participated in anything else either. It was a lot more fun to be wasted and fuck the rest. My grade point hovered between 1.0 and 1.5 consistently. The only thing that saved my diploma was sucking it up and attending a vocational school that fulfilled most of the credits I was missing.

I'm right there with CrayDrygu. That's all good advice.
I just put together essentially the same system you've specified, the same gigabyte mainboard, etc. - I have different memory, a stronger video board, and two hard drives, but the process and the basics are the same. I'm using it right now, fresh built yesterday. Crysis is fun. :)

How do I get Firefox to work in 256 colors?
On your SBS2k3 server:
Open Administrative Tools. Click on Terminal Services Configuration. Now click on the RDP connection entry in the right pane, and right-click. Select Properties. Select the Client Settings tab. Make sure the check mark for "Limit Maximum Color Depth" is checked and select 16 Bit.
Now close the terminal server session, and restart RDP without connecting to the server. Click the Options button, then click Display. Set it for... [more]

Then I think you're fighting a losing battle and I suggest you remote into a workstation machine on the network rather than the server itself (which is a much, much safer practice anyway). FF3 relies very heavily on the csrss.exe process which renders the GUI. That process is very different between the XP/2003 codebase than in a Win2k codebase.

Scaling back Small Business Server 2003
Please don't try to remove the domain. You'll create more problems and end up calling the IT guys back in. There is no magic button, but there are things you can do to reduce complication.
First, and I stress this strongly: If there is one area where IT companies fail utterly it's teaching users how to get the most out of SBS. It really can be a great resource for even very small organizations. I train customers mercilessly, to the point of annoying... [more]

Having said all that, you might want to go look at ">Techsoup, see if you can get a copy of Windows 2003 standard for cheap (depends on your church tax status but I think the admin fee for a 5 user version is about 50 bucks), and blow away SBS and reinstall Windows 2003 Standard.
Otherwise, go right ahead and use Windows XP, but you HAVE to use Professional in order to get file sharing to work right.

I just did it. I'm on Verizon. It took 8.2 seconds. Only some carriers support MMS,for example Sprint doesn't support it, it's a "server issue".

"Media disconnected", "network cable not plugged in". What is going on?
I'd try a different cable. "Media disconnected" means there is no voltage on the cable, meaning it's probably the culprit.

Re: getting a light from the network card: If there is no light at the computer network jack, try looking for a light at the router end - if your connected to port 1 on the router, if the computer network card is working, the light for port 1 should be lit.

... and to follow on - if a network card is shorting out or causing a lot of traffic issues, it could very well disrupt network operation - especially if it's not well made.

What do sober people do?
One of the hardest things to get used to, upon sobering up, is realizing that not having a drink in hand is a normal condition for people, and not the other way around. When you begin to realize that not every occasion deserves a drink or a drug, the possibilities start to surface.
We have an Alano club near my house - it's a sober club. They act as sort of a coffeehouse/substitute bar for people - pool tables, cards, meetings, sports on TV - so a general hangout. That's... [more]

Sharing (via WiFi) a NAS connected via ethernet to a MacMini
Why can't you plug the NAS ethernet into the wifi router? Unless there are no ports for it, that would be the proper method to use. In other words, the NAS should be publishing its shares on its own, there's no need to publish them through the mini. Since the wifi router should be using the same ethernet segment on both the wired and wifi ports, the NAS should be discoverable from both Macs.

If you don't like a textbook that's being used by schools, write your own damn textbook and convince your school board to use it. That's called "representative government," people.
