Ask post: On your bumper and accelerating
I like to use the guy in front of me as a speedometer. It's a lot easier than actually driving.

Also, do a search for a file that ends in .nk2. Copy that out and save it, and put it back in the same location after the reinstall. It's all the addresses you're typing in the address bar that aren't in your contacts.

Ask post: Help with saying No to drugs
I smoked a lot of pot in high school, and I failed miserably. Because I was stoned most of the time, I never paid attention in class, never did my homework, and never participated in anything else either. It was a lot more fun to be wasted and fuck the rest. My grade point hovered between 1.0 and 1.5 consistently. The only thing that saved my diploma was sucking it up and attending a vocational school that fulfilled most of the credits I was missing.

I'm right there with CrayDrygu. That's all good advice.

I just put together essentially the same system you've specified, the same gigabyte mainboard, etc. - I have different memory, a stronger video board, and two hard drives, but the process and the basics are the same. I'm using it right now, fresh built yesterday. Crysis is fun. :)

On your SBS2k3 server:
Open Administrative Tools. Click on Terminal Services Configuration. Now click on the RDP connection entry in the right pane, and right-click. Select Properties. Select the Client Settings tab. Make sure the check mark for "Limit Maximum Color Depth" is checked and select 16 Bit.

Now close the terminal server session, and restart RDP without connecting to the server. Click the Options button, then click Display. Set it for... [more]

Then I think you're fighting a losing battle and I suggest you remote into a workstation machine on the network rather than the server itself (which is a much, much safer practice anyway). FF3 relies very heavily on the csrss.exe process which renders the GUI. That process is very different between the XP/2003 codebase than in a Win2k codebase.

Ask post: Scaling back Small Business Server 2003
Please don't try to remove the domain. You'll create more problems and end up calling the IT guys back in. There is no magic button, but there are things you can do to reduce complication.

First, and I stress this strongly: If there is one area where IT companies fail utterly it's teaching users how to get the most out of SBS. It really can be a great resource for even very small organizations. I train customers mercilessly, to the point of annoying... [more]

Having said all that, you might want to go look at ">Techsoup, see if you can get a copy of Windows 2003 standard for cheap (depends on your church tax status but I think the admin fee for a 5 user version is about 50 bucks), and blow away SBS and reinstall Windows 2003 Standard.

Otherwise, go right ahead and use Windows XP, but you HAVE to use Professional in order to get file sharing to work right.

Ask post: What do sober people do?
One of the hardest things to get used to, upon sobering up, is realizing that not having a drink in hand is a normal condition for people, and not the other way around. When you begin to realize that not every occasion deserves a drink or a drug, the possibilities start to surface.

We have an Alano club near my house - it's a sober club. They act as sort of a coffeehouse/substitute bar for people - pool tables, cards, meetings, sports on TV - so a general hangout. That's... [more]

Ask post: Sharing (via WiFi) a NAS connected via ethernet to a MacMini
Why can't you plug the NAS ethernet into the wifi router? Unless there are no ports for it, that would be the proper method to use. In other words, the NAS should be publishing its shares on its own, there's no need to publish them through the mini. Since the wifi router should be using the same ethernet segment on both the wired and wifi ports, the NAS should be discoverable from both Macs.

Get this, install it on your server, and share away. It has a web interface so users can manage their own files, is very Mac and PC friendly, has a neat uploader function, notifies you when clients have uploaded or downloaded and a ton of other things.

You can also set up your own users and groups and set file permissions, or assign them home folders (so they can't see anyone else's stuff).... [more]

Ask post: Shared Outlook Categories firmwide = possible?
Actually, qvtqht's method is still appropriate for versions of Outlook below 2007.

Outlook 2007 no longer stores the categories in the registry and there is no master category list - it's all "color categories" and whatnot now The categories are part of the mailbox store. You can have a public contact folder on the Exchange server, set up your categories there, and when people use those contacts the categories follow along.

Go spend more dough and get an external hard drive. Set it to be Photoshop's scratch disk. Separating the OS virtual memory and Photoshop's virtual memory is always a good idea.

Ask post: How do I perform this Active Directory black magic?
I would look into organizational units and group policies. Without some more specific information about how your TS users are configured with group policy, though, I can't really define how the OU's should be set up because group policy and terminal servers acting as domain controllers are odd bedfellows.
But, in very general terms, I'd put a domain controller at each site with a terminal server running alongside it (the DC could be a virtual machine, doesn't have to be separate... [more]

My suggestion is to recommend your ideas firmly and rely on your past experience with them.

If that doesn't fly, and I'm not sure how viable or cost-effective it would be, but an alternative is to create an SEO-optimized version to run alongside the primary site. This also allows the SEO site to have specific tracking URLs that may help target their market, etc.

The version of Xplorer2 Lite that I just downloaded (1.7.0.5 LITE) has two panes by default. I don't see tabs, I see a standard + list on the left side, and the right pane is an uber-pane divided in two distinct panes. I can copy between panes as I would expect.

Ask post: Any experiance with Faxing from within Windows... sans modem?
A shot in the dark: If you are running a Windows small business server, it's quite simple to add a modem to it and set up shared faxing to it using a shared fax printer on the server.

Alternately, have you installed the D880 software as downloaded from Canon? The software may have a print driver for the fax capability (HP's do - I installed the software and it created two new printers, a printer and a fax printer) that may not be installed using a "network install".

I'd contact the ISP and see if they will set up a smarthost for you. They may offer this (AT&T does for DSL customers). Alternately, see if the ISP will let your client (Outlook) send directly using SMTP credentials (which is the same thing as a smarthost, just not on the mail server).

Do the intranet thing.

The standard contact form that ships with Outlook 2003 has a picture embedded in it. The problem is that the specific form that's used in the "protected" contacts folder - the one you see in your mailbox - can't be edited. When you try to edit it, it defaults to the organization form, which is an Outlook 2002 version that has no picture. There's no way to edit the default form in Outlook 2003.

Set the bios to NOT power on after a restart. If the system powers off because of a power problem, it will stay off. This will isolate your problem to a power issue. Therefore, please also verify that the "automatically restart" option in system failure is ACTUALLY unchecked by checking the option, applying the change, unchecking it again, and restarting.... Ask post: How to restore auto-complete in Outlook?
Here is a tool for editing an NK2 file.
It can import from a text file.

I would export the sent items folder to a text file, scrub it to fit the import format requested by the software, and then import the email addresses to the new NK2 file. Specifically an NK2 file only holds 1000 names, so you may hit that limit.

...as an aside, YOU HAVE USERS WITH 3GB MAILBOXES? I'd strongly recommend paring that down, the file size limit on a PST file (which is the fallback format for Exchange mailboxes) can only handle 2 GB in size. You may run into real trouble if you have to restore that mailbox to a PST file for any reason.

Just sayin'.

I use standard (kitchen) plastic bags as a can liner. Then I insert a standard brown paper bag (from the grocery store where they are an option) inside the liner. Really wet garbage isn't put in there unless it's "safe" - meaning somehow won't weaken the paper bag. I have several tactics that I use to do this. You can also follow this procedure to create the ASR files without the floppy, and then copy them to another location to create a floppy or, if you are lucky, your PC can boot from a USB key (I have never tried to boot ASR to a key, not sure if it will work or not but it might be worth a shot)...
