Am I doing it wrong?
Thank you, prefpara for your question, and gudrun for your answer. I didn't even know this was a "thing," but I have this problem and it has lead to pain and embarrassment on many occasions.

How can I get myself to breathe regularly like a normal person?
Seconding Sunshinesky, especially since you mention humming, as well. Tics are indeed controllable for short periods, with a building of the feeling of the need to do the action until it seems unbearable. Tics are also exacerbated by stressful situations.
How about periods of time of excessive blinking or throat-clearing as a child? It is telling that the doctors most likely to be the first to diagnose tics in a child are eye doctors or eent docs.... [more]

I'm sorry, I misspoke--I meant that eye doctors and ear-eyes-nose-throat guys are the first doctors generally consulted by parents when children start exhibiting tics, not that they are the first to diagnose the symptoms as tics.

get behind the thrift store
Milkspiller in Hattiesburg, MS gets good reviews, especially for vinyl. If you get by there, tell 'em "The Deadman sent me." (I have a website for local musicians, and many folks know this very alive, not-so-coordinated girl as "Dead Man Dancing.")
Hattiesburg in general is a very cool little town. MeFiMail me, if you wish to learn more.

Wedding ring engraving inspiration
Late, I am, but I wanted to share ours.
My now husband and I had dated many years ago and had a fairly terrible, fight-filled relationship. Ten years pass and we find ourselves back together. We agreed to fight fair this go around, and things have been pretty great.
When it came time to engrave the rings, we decided on "No knives" for mine, and "No guns" for his. Not that our fights were ever physical, much less with weapons,... [more]

A week's worth of cat questions
If you decide to carry them with you in the cabin, may I suggest some sort of cat valium? Yowling cats for 3 hours=murderous cabin-mates. How well do they usually travel in the car, etc.?
I have two cats, one of whom would have already trained himself to use the toilet had it ever occurred to him. The other, well, he is a supermodel. Gorgeous and utterly stupid. How smart are your guys?

How do I price my used books accurately?
@waylaid: How much tinkering does it take to use it for cataloging books specifically? I remember the cuecat and I have a similar need, but can it be used "out of the box" for books?

I wonder if the George Foremans have this problem.
Good points, 26.2.
And to those who suggest lawyering up: fortunately, I have a lawyer as a close friend of the family, and I have a call in to him to see what he says.
Sometimes it sees that most questions on AskMe can be answered by one of the following:

LUA (Lawyer up Already)
Go ahead and eat it, you'll be fine

Two Cats are Better than One?
I vote for two.
Side note: I had a very old kitty who disappeared for 3 weeks. I had decided it was the end of him :( and I had to get a kitten to distract me from my anguish. Of course, old Alex showed up again a week later. The new kitten tortured him--wouldn't let him eat, rode him around like a horse, just pestered the dickens out of him. My vet's solution? Get another kitten.
I said, no, no way, but then she showed me the kitten. Love at... [more]

My cat's sick again, looking for ideas on what he's got and how I should proceed.
I think the situation definitely demands a second opinion ASAP. I am not a vet, of course, but intestinal blockages can be life threatening.
Also, that kind of distress about going to the vet isn't something you or kitty has to put up with. Now may not be the time to try to help him with that, because I do think you need to get to a vet as soon as you can, but in the future, look into Feliway for calming him, or even some cat Valium.
Good luck,... [more]

funny matriarchs
Still Standing is one of my favorite sitcoms. Sadly, almost no one has heard of it and it is now only in re-runs. One of the reasons I like it is because it doesn't have the same old formula. Mom (Jamie Gertz!) and Dad are both funny and irresponsible. The dad is played by Brit Mark Addy with an American accent that is surpassed only by House's Hugh Laurie. The kids are an integral part of the show, and not just trotted out when needed for the plot. The writing is smart.... [more]

Pot Paranoia
Anecdotally, I once got myself pretty wound up one night after hearing sirens. I was paranoid about that for a minute, but then pot logic (hey! The name of my new band!) kicked in and I decided that if they were coming after me, they wouldn't be using sirens. So, I spent a good two hours being paranoid that they were silently coming after me.
I think it is pot's tendency to make you examine any number of things in ways you may not have thought about... [more]

Make me laugh
I had to pull over once listening to Kevin Kling on NPR. His is not a biting humor, by any means, but his delivery knocks me out. He tells real-life stories such as the incredible tale of how he ran Grandma's Marathon in Duluth MN. And along the "real life, exaggerated" lines, of course don't forget David Sedaris.

Wolves at the Door
Seems the phrase "black dog" as a metaphor for depression has a long history, and was made popular by Churchill. Here's a link to a PDF (rendered in HTML) entitled: “Churchill’s Black Dog?: The History of the ‘Black Dog’ as a Metaphor for
Depression.” Perhaps that will help?

Including yourself in exclusionary settings
Boy, my friends and I love a new victim person in our midst. I already know what my guys think about everything, I wanna hear what the new guy has to say! We can actually focus too much on a newbie, and we are quite snarky, so it can feel pretty intimidating, I suppose.
Asking questions is a good intro, as others have said. You might not be doing a lot of the talking at first, but if you can get the group talking to you,... [more]

"I'll take 'Cutest Cellphone Ever' for $200, Alex."
I have the Pantech c3--it is almost toy-like in its diminutive size. As said above, it is fairly easy to use and very easy to carry. I am a pocket girl, not a purse girl, and it is just right for that. Might be too easily lost for a time if you are used to just throwing your phone into a huge bag. The big downside is that finding a usb package has been all but impossible. I had to get ringtones from a phone call, and I still can't get the pictures off of it. This may change? "...my sister is greedy and she'll freak out if I don't throw her a shower. I know it's not about the presents, but she doesn't" and, "she wants a shower, but hates opening gifts in front of people" is oxymoronic.
A SHOWER is about opening gifts. (The type of shower dictates the kind of gifts. I had a laid-back shower in a dive bar, and got silly sex-toy gifts and cooking utensils. There were a few that could have been either.)

explain it to a pro
First, from your comments in this thread, it sounds like money is a big motivator for you, and in my experience, having lots of money is pretty damn hard work.
Second, I'd like to know what it is that you are doing when you aren't doing what it is that you are supposed to be doing. Perhaps the problem is some sort of disconnect between doing those things that you think will bring you the money (and approbation of your family and... [more]

How do I know if medical school is a good environment for me?
Is there an ombudsman or something like that for students to discuss these types of issues outside of your psychiatrist? Surely this is a concern that many students have had. Have they given you any requirements to fulfill to prove to them that you are ready for the challenge? And are you ready/capable to... [more]

I would think you might could accomplish this feat in the more remote part of the Boundary Waters in Minnesota. If you were remote enough and lost your map, you could end up in miles of dead-end waterways. I know you said cold shouldn't be a factor, but the temperature it takes to become dangerously hypothermic (and therefore even more confused) when wet is pretty high--in the mid 60's.

Heading down South for the Holidays.
I'm not sure, but I suspect that no one is running boats out to the islands again yet, especially not this time of year. Mobile is only about an hour and a half to the East. We're having a fairly mild winter so far (I'm here in Hattiesburg, about an hour and a half north of the Coast), so maybe even heading to Florida might not be too bad an idea.
