Slowly set up a alternative life- then leave.

Sci-Fi novels on unusual planets
Most of Iain Banks Culture novels include 'Orbitals'. One of his later works 'The Algebraist' sees action taking place on a gas giant.
The novel 'Player of Games' sets the climax on a really well imagined world- would be a spoiler to mention more- his science fiction is well worth a read.

Is my girlfriend too needy, or is this normal for some people?
You need to go. Do not give in to this behaviour, if you do she will become more dominating. She knows it's ridiculous behaviour, and is obviously using the exam as leverage in blackmail.
You too can use this, if you go it will let her know that you cannot be treated in such a manner.
I wouldn't stand for it- you can't build a relationship around lack of freedom.

How to break the news to the conservative parents?
My SO is from Taiwan, and we were in very much the same situation- with her living in Australia and studying. The concept of "me" was slowly introduced, i.e.
I've met an incredibly amazing, handsome boy...
Month or two later... incredibly amazing, handsome boy has a room in his house...
They put two and two together and worked it out. We started visiting Taiwan together and it was pretty obvious that we were a... [more]

Take this Job and Shove It?
At 15 months, this is the longest time I have been employed full-time in a professional setting. If I leave my job, will it look bad on my resume or hinder my chances of finding a good job elsewhere?
No. This will not damage you future prospects.
KokuRyu is right, sounds like you're starting to slip anyway, or your "attitude" has been noticed (if you have an attitude)
Clearly time to start casting around for... [more]

Down or synthetic sleeping bag?
Down is heavy
Look for Super Down bags, these are really light and very warm. They are expensive but well worth it.
Synthetic has all the disadvantages that you would expect, but they do dry out quickly.
You're in Melbourne, Rays have super down bags, and get a swag too. You'll be lovely and dry, warm too. I bought swag there a few years back for 11 bucks, brilliant investment.

Freelance liability insurance is making my head hurt.
We had to have professional indemnity and general liability insurance in dealing with a large corporate client We passed the cost on.
Either try to get them to drop it or tell them that you'll need to pass the cost onto them

I don't have any real life friends. What should I do?
If you dont' mind me asking anonymous, what are your hobbies?
This is a really good start. Many people just don't have hobbies and are in a similar situation. It sounds trite, but it's very true. A shared interest can often open the doors to other interests/discoveries etc.
I wouldn't discount seeking people with similar interests.
Also, regarding meeting people for coffee or being in social situations, it takes practice.

How common is familiartity with .ZIP archives?
My experience is that they don't at all.
We deal with a large user base as well as their support staff you one would think would be familiar with ZIP files- we often need to explain how to unpack a zip file.

Designing website mock ups?
If you want to mock the actual design, use photoshop or equivalent. Then you do the "cuts" from there. That's industry practice.
Wireframe isn't for visual reference, its for functionality. Wireframes can look ugly as sin- but they demonstrate execution flow.
MeMail me with an email address and I'll send you a few mockups if you wish.

Day's never finished...
There is such a thing as bad business.
Clients that are more trouble than they are worth are not worth keeping. Keep the profitable clients, ditch the rest.
Are you into code reuse? Develop standards and stick with them. You should be able to bolt together an application with pre existing parts. If not you are doing something wrong.
Ditto hosting- it's not worth the effort. Leave it to the big guys.

Joni Mitchel is a genius songwriter
Margaret Atwood is a brilliant story teller

Nepotism at my Job is Driving me crazy. How do I learn to deal with it?
There is nothing unusual in what you are feeling. It's not the same in all companies, good sales people are highly regarded- and as a sales person your skills should be relatively portable. If you're not happy, move on- there are plenty of reason in the world to get stressed, and you shouldn't get stressed by something that is in your control to change.
Also nepotism is usually used to indicate a form of favouritism that involves family relationships.

Lots of good answers here.
GuyZero, funnily enough the code name for the app was Echidna, and the API and namespaces are called Echidna. So maybe I'll keep it that.
Fyi, the competitors are called "Resolve" and "RiskMan"
Thanks all for helping to put this to bed.
Cheers.

Help me pick a web dev language to learn.
Nothing moift mentions has any bearing on someone who is out to learn a language.
I doubt that the PHP6 namespace issue, writing higher-order functions, types, reported memory issues will have any bearing on what you are trying to achieve.
The backwards compatibility issue again is a furphy. Again the leaking memory. Some PHP builtins may leak memory, but again, is not something that will affect you in the slightest.... [more]

With the danger of getting into chatfilter/sounding like a php evangelist, PHP syntax is ecma based, which means it is syntactically similar to java, c#, javascript, even c.
If you are finding PHP to be awful and spaghetti-like, perhaps revising the way in which one writes code is more the point. No matter the language, if code is spaghetti-like it's the code, not the language.
Java is a language that is well worth learning, though it will take... [more]

After four years you're still looking for guidance, supervision and mentoring?
Perhaps look on your boss's lack of availability as an opportunity. He probably wants you to step up to the plate and shoulder some workload too. I bet there are things you could be doing to help him out.
