Thanks for posting this. I've seen him twice with Andrew Bird, and both were really great shows. More people should know about both artists.

Gay not so 'good' for candidates?
What's your gay culture about, then?
I don't understand why people question why gays and lesbians want to talk about gay and lesbian issues.
I went to a meeting at my college on national coming out day, and one of the attendees asked, "Why is it that gay people always want to talk about SEX? Why is everything always about BEING GAY?"
My favorite answer to this question went:... [more]

America has a problem with public displays of sex, heterosexual or homosexul
Tell that to...everything on TV.
Seriously, I understand and, to some degree, even agree with what you are trying to say. I think the real problem has more to do not with holding some wild parae but the unwillingness of extreme social conservatives to realize that a parade is not a representation of an entire group of people.

You appear, to me, to be suggesting that glbt-types need to do what they can to help mainstream America be able to quietly ignore the fact that GLBT types engage in sex
I'm not sure why it appears that way to you.
The Civil Rights era didn't win the victories it won by quietly conforming to the demands of mainstream America. It demanded that mainstream America acknowledge and accept the rights in question.... [more]

And this is the problem- even those little bits of affection are reminders to homophobic retards that OMG BUTTSECKS. Until we come to a point where OMG BUTTSECKS doesn't freak people out (or the number of people who are freaked out by it are a cranky minority), the "don't remind people of OMG BUTTSECKS" tactic is going to be a ludicrous, ridiculous failure, because any sign that you are not heterosexual is, to the freaked-out retards, a reminder of OMG BUTTSECKS.... Anyone CAN Cook
I like this lots, but some of these are not 10 minute recipes.
Sear corn kernels in olive oil with minced jalapeños and chopped onions; toss with cilantro, black beans, chopped tomatoes, chopped bell pepper and lime.
Cutting, chopping, mincing and dicing takes a little time. I'm not saying tons, but more than 10 minutes, for me, anyways.

Nothing to do with the open bar
The average cost of a wedding in the US has gone over $30,000. This is just one more example of that kind of craziness.
I agree, which is partially why I posted this, even though I thought some of the pictures are pretty good (although not all), I thought it might make for good discussion.
At first, I thought it was a kind of cool idea, becuase I thought it was a free thing that people did after their weddings to make a... [more]

A Month of Sundays
Dan Savage posted a letter he recived from a pastor on the stranger's bog.
As much as I love Dan Savage, sometimes, I kind of hate him. I understand the point he's making, but at the same time, there is no point in denying that the entire reason for the feature was to laugh at what other people believe. I'd rather seem Savage & co spend time doing what he often does on the Slog and in Savage love when they out the true hypocrites, but making fun of others for the... [more]

I don't want the national discourse on religion to be dominated by people who hold nothing but contempt for those who disagree. That's just as true for snarky Stranger reporters as it is for the Pat Robertsons and Rick Santorums.
Agreed.
I enjoyed reading a few of the pieces, but over all, I have to say that the attitude of the piece (and of Savage's reponse to others) is nothing but more hate and intolerance.... [more]

'm not a church goer, but if someone wants something to believe in, why mock them for it?
Because the religious nuts will vote another George W. Bush into office because Jesus told them to.
The whole point of my comment was that non-offensive people who just want to go to church and get some peace a day or two a week don't deserve to be mocked, stereotyped, or hated any more than any nonoffnsive non-believer does. Religious... [more]

Some have said that the rumor about Mick Jagger and David Bowie having an affair in the '70s was fueled by prurient homophobia. We prefer to think it became popular because it's fucking hot.

I thought so too, but then I assumed that my being a woman hampered my sense of humor and thus kept me from enjoying his jokes.

A No Go for Homos
I wish that I could eloquently and intelligently dicuss things like this, but the truth is, I can't. I'm completely fed up with the obvious hate that underlies decisions like this. I'm completely disgusted with the segment of the country that continues to support measures like this. I'm sad that no progress seems to be made. And for what end? I mean, I'm sure we've all discussed this to death and all realize that decisions like this are silly and unnecessary and detrimental, but things don't... [more]

Also, since when did churches have bowling alleys and roller rinks attached? Surely they're the devil's doing?
My brother lived with my father in Southern Virginia when he was in high school, and was forced to attend a church like that. They had a room full of Xbox's and I-Pods, plasma TVs and the like, all for attracting the young'uns to Christ, in some round about away.

Frankly, the fact that principal believes and/or knows there are students who "[did not] understand what he was saying" speaks volumes for the educational system in and of itself.

There seems to be a weird disconnect between what viewers found funny and what the audience found funny at the time.
Yeah that's what I though too. Most of the Hollywood people didn't like being made fun of all night, but that was exactly why I was laughing.
