Go to Master's Program or Job then Master's Program?
In a lot of circumstances, I'd say go for the graduate school. Engineering is generally kind of an exception to that. I'm in grad school for mechanical engineering without having gotten a job first, but I was offered funding when I was accepted at the school I'm currently attending, so I didn't have to pay for it myself. In many cases in engineering, your company will gladly pay for you to get an advanced degree.

Regardless, even if I had had no experience with grad... [more]

Sorry Dallas, you can always make the drive.
The 6th seems alright, but at that point in time I may or may not be swamped with school work (the last day of class for UT is this friday, the 4th, and I have an exam and a largeish final project due in the following weeks). I'll try to make it, but no promises.

Have we figured out where it will be yet? I'll put in a vote for Crown and Anchor, because I like it and because it's easy for me to get to (and right across the street from my office, so if I am working I'll... [more]

Is mac really better than pc? Help me buy a decent student computer.
You say you're about to be a student in English, and I'm going to take that to mean you're going to college. If this is the case, you're probably, ultimately, going to want a laptop. Having that level of portability is really indispensable.

Apple's laptop prices are falling more in line with the equivalent mainstream PC prices as time goes on, but they still tend to be on the expensive side. I think any extra cost is generally worth it, but I'm a big fan of Mac OS and... [more]

Where can I meet fellow grad students?
If you want to meet engineers, a lot of us seem to spend almost all of the time we're not working at either JP's or Crown and Anchor*, on the northeast side of campus. They're pretty grad-studenty places. Dog and Duck strikes me as having a similar, low-key feel. Flying Saucer is kind of douchey, but at any given point in time in the evenings you're likely to find a reasonably heavy grad student contingent.

I'm a current 2nd year grad student, writing this from my office... [more]

Somehow I missed this thread and didn't see it until I was looking at the sidebar. Fontophilic and I will try to be there!

(Just to clarify: it's at 3pm at Dog and Duck on Sunday, November 15th, 2009, yes? This thread has many suggestions.)

My desk gets really hot.
When you say furnace, do you mean one of those below-window radiators? Like this?

Regardless, I don't think you'd have any problem attaching some kind of insulation to the bottom of the desk - either mccarty.tim's suggestion of foam board or a small piece of insulating foam from a hardware store should work just fine.

A word of warning, though: try to figure out how hot it gets. Having paper-covered foam board near a very hot surface (the... [more]

I came here about to tell you to do it the way crapples suggested, only to find that you sort of shot it down.

The DC area's classic cocktail scene?
I called the Gibson a couple of hours ago and asked if they could take us, and the woman who answered flat-out said no (but nicely!), which is too bad because it sounds great. She said the patio will be open, but that it's first-come-first-serve and that she wasn't too optimistic that it wouldn't be crowded.

My Parents Were Awesome
Oh man, my parents were and are totally awesome.

They met in Morocco on an archaeological dig in the '70s -- my dad was working on his PhD in archaeology and my mom was in architectural school, doing drawings of the excavation. They've since traveled all over Europe, rented an apartment from an apparent cult in DC in the early '80s, and lived all over the country (including in a cabin in the woods in Wisconsin).

Now, probably a couple of weekends... [more]

I cannot express how much I disagree with this statement. We live within a few minutes walk of Güero's and we have eaten there all of once. Why? I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. Yes, it had its problems. DC's winters are miserably DAMP, and that makes for a different kind of bitter cold.

I'll take you on a short tour of the islands. If you take US 158 down and across, as you get off the bridge, you have the choice of going north or south. The area right around the bridge is fairly commercialized. If you go south, you get to the relatively built... [more]

I'd just like to echo a lot of the sentiments already expressed: a lot of the differences between France and the US can be found just by going through everyday life and seeing how you both challenge each others' preconceptions of your respective cultures. Virtually all of the major power generation systems (coal, nuclear, natural gas, etc.) are "steam engines", though they output electricity rather than direct mechanical power.
