Remembering Ricky
Jesus, heeeraldo, I didn't even notice. He was only 4 months older than me. The first of my college friends got married last weekend. My best friend has been teaching high school for 2 years. Too fucking young. Too fucking early.

The Giant Pool of Money
I heard the last half of this earlier today and I loved it. They managed to make a very complex problem very understandable. Perhaps the most crucial aspect was the way they worked around the jargon and cut to fundamental core of every aspect. For example, using the phrase "Giant Pool of Money" and the quick and clear translation of words like "tranches" without loss of information.
This constant "rebasing to common understanding" is... [more]

Meant to be seen and heard, I say
Okay, this one is definitely techincally interesting, and probably better than the originals. Well, except for "No Woman, No Cry". Was anyone able to find where the 4th song in that list was used?

Which Solid Gold Dancer are you?
Is anyone else born in the '80s remembering how omnipresent these songs were? I'm struggling to watch these videos because each one is chock-full of songs that I know, but hate with a passion because I could never escape them. Each one is like a shoving a piece of granite into my eardrum. I know its irrational and I'm not going to hate on others for liking them.. but goddamn do these suck.

There's no need to be unhappy in Finland!
Man, I really need to find something that proves to me that not all of Finnish music and pop culture sucks. Everything I've seen so far leads me to believe that the entire society is tin-eared and unable to groove. That isabhell video Burhanistan linked to is alright, but I'll need far more than that to overcome this irrational belief in the incredible suckitude of Finnish offerings.

Fake Steve Jobs Outed as Forbes Senior Editor
Is it bad that reading his "real blog" makes me respect him less based on the opinions there? He seems to have a serious hard-on for making the Open Source community look bad and tries to do it in really silly ways.
Friggin' love Fake Steve Jobs, though.

Man, no matter how you feel about the OSDL/Groklaw/PJ thing, he's claim to be just "covering it" is specious at best, and hypocritical at worst. Looking over his posts, he's got a mindset he believes is correct and he's trying to prove it.
Dude, at least have the courage to claim what you believe in. That doesn't necessarily mean you think SCO is right, but you know you have a desire for Open Source to "fail" (whatever that means). You are... [more]

I'm all for the idea that advertising can be art or entertainment, but this really doesn't seem to hit either of those very hard. Perhaps, if the post text introduced it differently (which has saved similar posts), but I don't think so.

Your favorite web comic sucks
Dude, that last one on Dominic Deegan was amazing. I didn't read the summary here so the end of the post just blew me away.
He is to writing what a child molester is to sex.
That blew my mind. When I read it, I thought "yes, yes, I know exactly what he means." Though the anger doesn't make sense until you get to the rape, it seems to me to be a near perfect description of the writing.

That's on Feisty, of course. Anything earlier and you'd have to enable the "universe" repositories. Which is easy, but an additional step.

Dell to be what it is because of who we all are
You guys do know that the latest Ubuntu searches for the mp3 codecs automatically when you load up an mp3 file right? Same goes for QuickTime and Windows Media Files. It gives you this neat little dialog that says "Hey, you can't do that, but we could install this codec and then you can". You hit "Yes", it installs and boom, starts playing your file.
It's so freaking easy, now.

God forbid they not support a package that they don't control. Do you expect Microsoft or Apple to make Photoshop stop crashing when you add that lens flare to your hilarious neckbeard-critiquing webcomic?
Okay, I need to back away from this conversation.

I really didn't like Survivalism when it first came out, but then I figured out a trick: crank it way up. It's been mixed to be played loud. I like it pretty well with the volume up.

Yes, have some.
Today, when we can eat Tex-Mex with chopsticks while listening to reggae and watching a YouTube rebroadcast of the Berlin Wall's fall—i.e., when damn near everything presents itself as familiar—it's not a surprise that some of today's most ambitious art is going about trying to make the familiar strange."
I so often experience this feeling of authorial (or quotorial?) familiarity that I am continually reorienting with myself to understand the content as... [more]
