has anyone thought to check out the political leanings of the average college professor?
could it be that the professors do have a profound influence on their students POVs?

I know that when I was attending Texas Tech University (usually characterized as a conservative school) it seemed to me that most of the professors who espoused any view at all were libs. Most of the students tended to support the arguments delivered by these professors because they had... [more]

I have to agree with jfuller on the racism charge. Judging historical figures with todays standards is a slippery slope.
As for dysfunctional, I don't know that many families that aren't.

On whether he freed slaves just for strategic reasons, read his second inaugural address. I think he just saw an easy political opportunity to do something that he felt was right. That is to say, he believed it was right, but had to find a time and situation that it could be done.

Don't know if I'm a minority opinion here or not, but I'll give this a try.
The problem with criticizing sweatshops is:
-people work there because its the best job they can get. If better jobs existed in the area, then that's where the workers would go. If Nike is providing jobs of any kind that people are willing to do, then they are probably improving the standard of living for those who would otherwise be agricultural workers. Just because we have... [more]

So, have we lost the will to explore/colonize space?
I gather from what I've read so far that most here are of a libertarian leaning. Does the government have any business running a space program? Should NASA be privatized? are the benefits of the space program worth the costs?

Sadly, such atrocities are not rare in the history of war. Just read what Hannibal's father did in war or the gory parts in the bible. When at war, men tend to lose restraint. The morals of their society tend to get tossed out the window. This is particularly true anytime the army gains control over the government.

This sort of horror is the reason US soldiers have to go through such an enormous amount of seemingly obvious training on Rules of Engagement.
