In Our Lifetime

Not sure if (justifiable) politicsfilter objections trump history in the making, but I don't know whether this merits an FPP or not. Hence it seems legit for MetaTalk, even if only to get a moderator to rule on whether we can have what I think will be an FPP comment thread for the ages. But dammit, Barack Obama, the son of a Kenyan immigrant and a Kansas farm girl, is about to be the nominee of the Democratic party for president of the US of Doggone A, and it is a moment worthy of of being marked and reflected upon for many in this community, I am sure, regardless of our political commitments.

Naalagiagvik -- The Place Where You Go to Listen

The Song of the Earth -- New Yorker music critic Alex Ross writes on composer John Luther Adams, who has created an installation work at the Museum of the North in Fairbanks, Alaska in which geologic, astronomical, and meteorologic data are converted, in real time, into "a shimmering synthesized carillon." For a tiny hint of the experience, you can watch this Youtube video Hear more about the work from Living on Earth.

The Rapture is Not an Exit Strategy

“People like you are not holding up the Constitution ..." Or so said Major Freddy Welborn, Specialist Jeremy Hall's commanding officer in Tikrit. "Last month, Specialist Hall and the Military Religious Freedom Foundation, an advocacy group, filed suit in federal court in Kansas, alleging that Specialist Hall’s right to be free from state endorsement of religion under the First Amendment had been violated and that he had faced retaliation for his views. In November, he was sent home early from Iraq because of threats from fellow soldiers." (NY Times)

Who Owns The Music?

Putting together a course on the history of music as property; I have a lot of the course figured out, but am looking for really well documented and interesting case studies or chronicles of disputes over the ownership of music.

Emilio

Emilio Navaira is a Grammy-winning Tejano and country singer. Navaira's tour bus was traveling north along west 610 Loop near the Southwest Freeway when it crashed into a set of freeway barrels shortly before 4 a.m. He is clinging to life in a Houston hospital. His fans are praying for him. Doctors say he is now stable, but he faces a difficult recovery at best, and may never perform again.

A Nation Apologizes. (Sydney Morning Herald.) Prime Minister Kevin Rudd's apology to the Stolen Generations of Aboriginal children. Here the history told from an Aboriginal perspective in Archie Roach's great song "Took The Children Away." (Youtube) (song lyrics).

Help me pick an audio workstation

So I want to buy a standalone digital audio workstation for a small but serious project studio, and I'd love feedback from folks with hands-on experience. I've narrowed the choices to Yamaha's AW1600, the Boss BR-1600CD, and the newish Zoom HD16CD. Of course there is . . .

Now the Musicologists Are Dangerous Too

"Dr. Nalini Ghuman {is} . . . a citizen of the United Kingdom and a professor of music at Mills College in Oakland, California. In August 2006 Dr. Ghuman was detained upon her return to the United States." And nobody knows why.

Live Free or Die?

The Tax Man Cometh:
"They believe, in the face of all evidence to the contrary, that their citizen's understanding of the written law should, and in some Platonic sense does, trump the realities of dealing with the government. This makes them uniquely American rebels--more true, they maintain, to the nation's core values than those of us who follow the pragmatic advice . . . "You mess with that shit, you are going to jail."
Brian Doherty analyzes the tax resistance movement (from 2004). Meanwhile, another ugly confrontation is brewing in New Hampshire, and violence is in the air. Mr. Brown, of course, has his views.

When Filemaker 8 Goes Bad

Filemaker Pro 8 refuses to launch. Why? Mac OSX 10.4 Server, Powermac G4 Quicksilver, 1GB RAM. It ran fine for months and then, with no changes to anything, just started crashing on startup, with no warning or dialogue boxes. I've deleted preferences, fixed permissions on all drives, reinstalled FM8, removed FM7 (which I also had on the machine) to no avail. Trying to avoid reinstalling OS X server. Advice?

Rudy's Grand Illusion

Rudy Giuliani's Grand Illusion (Village Voice) -- In which we learn the difference between what happened and how it got narrated. What we have left is this: At a moment when the public needed a hero, Rudy Giuliani stepped forward. When he assured New York that things would come out all right, he was blessedly believable. It was a fine thing. But it was not nearly as much as we, at the time, imagined.

Women Born Rich, Made Good?

Can you think of women born into significant wealth and status who have gone on to public and powerful careers of their own, not on the basis (even in part) of having married someone famous, powerful, or rich? Anywhere, anytime . . .

Fun on Highway 1

Driving up the California coast from LA to San Fran, 101 to 1, before turning inland at Santa Cruz. Looking for recommendations for great places to stay (relatively cheap) and great things to do along the way. Big Sur is definite, and I'm looking to overnight in the area. Everyone has favorites along this route. I want to hear 'em all.

Olbermann Tears O'Reilly a New One

O'Reilly insults American victims of a WWII war crime, and Keith Olbermann calls him out. It's been a while since I've seen pure outrage so eloquently expressed. The facts about Malmédy are well known. (WMV and QT video links via Crooks and Liars).

One Honest Wo(Man)

Diogenes the Cynic sought One Honest Man. Lately we have had some wonderful examples that would seem to confirm the philosopher's most cynical suspicions. And then along come some Honest {quicktime movie} Women and it's just so refreshing.

WebPoll Filter: I need a cheap (or free) online poll service that can collect at least 1000 responses and prevent revoting (using cookies or IPs, it doesn't have to be highly secure).
