Converting to Judaism, but secular / atheist?
Thanks for liking us Jews so much! As j1950 said, conversion is a LOT of work and it doesn't sound right for you or your beliefs.
That said, there isn't much that you can't do as an unofficial Jew. Want to go to a seder? Check community boards in your city or ask some Jewish friends. Want to go to temple? Go for it, just make sure you don't go to an Orthodox one. Want to keep kosher for Passover? Do it. Most Jews are cool with non-converted Jews doing all of that stuff.... [more]

Art School Preferential
School is a good place to learn how to teach or to build a stronger portfolio. Are either of those your goals?
If you are graduating with a BFA soon, you probably will already have a good portfolio. Ask your teachers, see if they think you need more work (i.e. masters) under your belt before you enter the art world.
This year, think about your goals, meet some artists in your area (other than your teachers) and see what kind of life you would like to have... [more]

A diamond ring that takes a licking and keeps on, um, ticking
1 ct is probably too large for a tension setting (you need a lot of metal around the stone in those settings to keep enough pressure on the stone and to make sure a bump won't be able to knock the rock out) and there would be a hugely thick band involved.
If your wife likes a lot of metal, you can see about getting her one of those, but I think her best bet is the bezel setting.
The bezel doesn't have any edges that could catch on anything, unlike the... [more]

Mr Cringe-a-lot

But, I've learned to deal with it and actually sometimes enjoy the cringe experience.

Men's Bathing Suits that Don't Reveal the Goods
Speaking as someone who would probably look if there was anything that could be ascertained by looking at men in swimshorts, no one is looking.
As long as you aren't wearing a speedo, that thing could be anywhere in your suit and any size. We wouldn't be able to tell.
Wear mid-length shorts or long shorts. Then, however long your shorts are, pretend it's about a half-inch from coming out from the bottom. Confidence is all you need.

Should I tell my kids I pay child support?
I don't think the kids need to know this. Being a good parent involves selflessness. Later, when your kids are in high school and they understand more about finances and the decisions behind divorce, they will understand where all their stuff came from and be grateful to you (well, truly grateful might come even later).
Be the bigger person in this situation. If your ex is taking credit for now, let her. It will all come out in the wash later in life. Your 9 yr olds don't need to... [more]

Underage show attendance in NYC
Yeah that place looks like it is is right next to NYU, which means they definitely card so they don't get in trouble having tons of underage college students in there all the time. The police presence on Macdougal is pretty heavy at night for just that reason. I'd say getting in is unlikely without some form of ID.

If you don't have your own washer/dryer and you go to a laundromat, have them do the laundry for you instead of you doing it yourself. This one thing has made the biggest difference in how I spend my weekends and how much time i have to do the things I want to do.
It's not that much more expensive, and for $5 I get to have 1/4 of my weekend back.

How do I rebuild my self-esteem after a break-up?
Enough of this guy for now, you don't need him as a friend.
Start hanging out with people who don't have "serious personal issues" and start hanging out with more guys who would want to date you. (Go out and meet new people!)
Do whatever you like to do, make sure you are going out where you will see fresh faces and don't just stay in your friend group when you go out. Try to mingle. You'll find a lot of people (some desirable to you, others not) who... [more]

"Radioactive Dating" isn't in the Yellow Pages
Hi, former geoarchaeologist here.
You can't carbon-date rocks. You can only carbon-date things that have organic material in them.
Even if you could date that rock (which you can with other techniques), I don't think it would tell you anything interesting. The rock material could be hundreds of thousands of years old, but the small piece of it that you have could have taken its pebble form at any point.
What would probably be more interesting to... [more]

How to turn a glass-top coffee table into a tile-top coffee table?
Plywood will work great- if your table has a lip then you'll need to measure how deep your wood + tile combo should be. I think most tiles are 1/8 inch deep but you should measure them too, and then find a piece of plywood that will make up the difference in depth.
To glue ceramic tile onto the plywood, use epoxy.
To glue glass tile to plywood use weldbond.... [more]

It can be resized, but it is much more complicated than resizing a plain band because of the pattern (the jeweler will have to create or find a piece to fit in with or match your unusual band) and the diamonds (they will have to be removed and reset once the new piece is fitted in).
Because of this work, it will cost you.
It can also be made into something else, but short of putting it on a chain for a necklace, you'll still have to have the stones reset, so... [more]

Do you have a cage for him yet? Once you do, you'll notice that he will eliminate in one corner of the cage almost exclusively. Buy a low storage tub or kitty litter pan (like this) and get a bag of Yesterday's News.
