Traffic Scorecard
This is further proof that the Cross Bronx is the worst road in the country. Possibly the world. You could drive through there at midnight on a Tuesday and get stuck in a 3-mile, 5mph traffic jam.
It's sad to say, but this isn't even CLOSE to being an exaggeration. I moved away from the Bronx (and the Northeast) years ago and thus don't get the pleasure of driving on the Cross Bronx very often anymore, but inexplicable traffic jams at hours where... [more]

School Defends Drunken Driving Hoax
I'd make an point of going out and doing something extra-rebellious this weekend.
Does calling every lawyer in the state count as extra-rebellious? Because that's what I would be doing.
Snark aside, those kids did learn a truly indelible lesson - never, under any circumstances, trust an authority figure. Whether that's a positive lesson for those kids to have learned is an intellectual exercise I'll leave up to you.

Reading more into the article, it appears that some of the kids at the school were actually complicit in this little scam.
I certainly hope those kids have some kind of security arrangement with the police department they helped, because if this school is anything like the one that I went to, they're going to end up on the wrong end of a couple of the worst beatings of their lives.

A Bob Barr candidacy does have the potential to spoil a couple of states, particularly his (and my) home state of Georgia (and its 15 electoral votes). Gravel, not so much.

Amsterdam? On the cleanest cities list? I think the person making the list ate one too many of the 'special' brownies while they were there - that place is FILTHY. Props for the bicycle culture and usable public transit, but Amsterdam is by no means what I would call clean. New York City certainly seems cleaner to me.

Care to explain? There is no middle ground? You can't be anti-union and anti-corporate? How about just being anti-corruption?
It's the converse of the "you're with us or you're with the terrorists". It's still illogical, even when viewed in a mirror image, though.

I wonder what she'd have said if I told her I grew up in an apartment
I get the strangest uncomprehending looks from my co-workers (in Atlanta) when I tell them that I grew up (as part of a family of four) in a two-bedroom apartment (in NYC). They just can't wrap their brains around it, especially when I tell them that I didn't have (or really need) a driver's license until three weeks before my 21st birthday, and had never mowed a lawn until I was... I'm apparently one of about twelve people in America who actually chose their home based on its proximity to their place of employment.
Question for you: do you have a contingency plan if you're "downsized" and need to take a job further away from home? Do you plan to relocate if that happens? Do you have school-age children, and are you willing to pull them out of school if that happens?

Turkish women might indeed be very safe in Turkey, but foreign women might be seen to have 'looser' morals than Turkish women, and therefore more likely to be the victims of violence and anger when they spurn the advances of local men who would never dare to approach a Turkish woman in a wanton manner...

The end of childhood
My 14-year-old asked her mother a couple of weeks ago if she can get a Brazilian wax. Our response was not just no, but "FUCK NO ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR MIND HOW IN THE THE HELL DO YOU EVEN KNOW ABOUT THAT?"
You know the old adage about "don't ask the question if you don't want to hear the answer?" Well, we heard the answer to that question: her best friend (13 years old) has been getting Brazilian waxes for a year now - her mom took her as soon as... [more]

No. The new definition of stealing is doing good/making the world a better place when there exists a corporation who might possibly have made a profit on it if you hadn't beat them to the punch.

"Rarely is the question asked, is our children learning?"
To the "just take karate classes" crowd: I was bullied in junior high school (not anywhere near as bad as this kid was). I didn't take karate classes, but my dad (himself a black-belt Vietnam-vet Marine) showed me enough to get by. Next time I was bullied, I beat the tar out of my most frequent tormentor (who also had 6, which bought me at least a year of peace. However, it also got my suspended, which was a bit ironic considering that I got my ass kicked on quite a few... [more]

The Michel Thomas Language Method
I (heart) Michel Thomas. Prior to a business trip to Italy last month, I used his Italian course as a refresher from my 15-years-unused schoolboy Italian, and it worked like the proverbial champ. I went in just a month from not having spoken more than a few pleasantries in Italian in a decade and a half to being able to conduct myself in Milan for an entire day of sightseeing without once resorting to pantomime or English.

This paragraph absolutely killed me:

FACT: Paula Deen's restaurant in Savannah, GA, The Lady And Sons is outstanding. It sucks not. Mythbusting Canadian Health Care
People seem to get locked into shitty positions by it.
Which is one of the reasons why it's so difficult to change the healthcare system here - employers don't want increased workforce mobility, so they lobby HARD to keep things the way they are.

The four girls were born at a U.S. hospital because there was no space available at Canadian neonatal intensive care units. Autumn, Brook, Calissa, and Dahlia are in good condition at Benefice Hospital in Great Falls, Montana.
The strange part about this is that Autumn, Brook, Calissa, and Dahlia, by virtue of having been born on this side of the line, are US citizens and will be able to come here and pay out the ass for their own healthcare any old time they want now.

From a quick read, the author in the first link is pointing out that men with jobs and independence seem to enjoy it, and want to preserve that state as long as possible. And, that some women are frustrated by the fact that they just can't convince all of them to live some other way.

I can think of another reason to resist something like this: A checklist will generate a paper trail. Now, paper trails are usually a good thing - they ensure accountability on whether a process was followed. On the other hand, they can open up a whole world of problems, even when processes are followed.
If there is a checklist, then every time there is a sub-optimal outcome in the ICU there will be a malpractice attorney taking a good hard look at the checklist.... [more]

Reto, I'm not suggesting that checklists (or charts for that matter) aren't a good thing. I think they're a GREAT thing - anything that improves medical outcomes is a good thing. And I'm not suggesting that doctors that don't follow the checklists not be held accountable.
On the other hand, I know a few physicians, and I've heard enough talk about malpractice witch-hunts to know that simply providing the best care possible isn't enough to keep your ass out of a... [more]
