Ask post: Ethics of a Pseudonym
For what it is worth, my writing agent is recommending a pseudonym when I finish start my children's novel. My other writing (in a completely different genre) has very strong adult and controversial themes. The concern is less my creditability (as I have some accolades in my regular genre) but rather parental or child reaction should they come across my more 'adult' material.

Ask post: Old tapes worth keeping.
Wow, k8lin, that is more complete an answer that I could've hoped for! Thanks. Presumably, the tapes should be completely rewound? I'm nervous that rewinding them will put unnecessary stress on them.
posted to Ask Metafilter by typewriter at 9:01 AM on April 9, 2008
Well, at the moment I can't afford a fridge for the tapes but I think a nice cool basement closet is in order. The temperature is constant and not damp. But storing them is actually quite complicated so I might focus on getting them digitized as soon as possible. Thanks all!

Update: A respected University library will archive the materials as well as properly handle the more sensitive items. Since they are no longer with me, for the curious, the tapes were from a certain student protest which ended with a universally condemned human-rights violation by big-name country almost 20 years ago.

Ask post: Un-whitewash myself?
While this is slightly different, because of the international opportunities of Hong Kong, but my sister moved back from Canada when she was well into her thirties. She didn't prepare for the language transition and by pure immersion in 2 years or so, she became completely fluent again. That, despite the fact that her employment is primarily in an English-language environment. Her life completely changed with her move, but I think for the better. She was happy enough in Canada, but she was... [more]

Ask post: Should I get cats considering my/their living conditions?
My cat is a 16 year old cat with outdoor access. I would say I live in a pretty urban environment in the biggest city in Canada. Inside, my cat is a tubby slob that lollygags about all day. At night, outside, he is completely different - alert, alive. One night recently, I called him in, and watched in awe as he ran towards me from almost a block away. His legs were completely extended with each bound on the sidewalk. He looked like a cheetah, and clearly he enjoyed running. How could I... [more]

Ask post: What foods do you eat when you feel a cold/flu coming on?
Nthing rice porridge (congee), saltines, Campbell's Chicken Soup. I was sick alot as a teenager so I often went to school, or my part-time jobs still suffering from a cold. On those occasions, for example when I had to write an exam, my mother would heat up coca-cola, with slices of ginger and lemon on the stove. It would clear the symptoms and give me enough boost for a couple of hours. Of course, I would collapse after that.

The other sick food my mother made... [more]

Ask post: Oh, so you're a [insert profession here]! How [insert whacky generalization and misguided curiosity here]?
When I get asked what I do, I say, "I work in theatre." I then get asked -

Q: Wow. What do you really do? I mean, during the day?
(I work in theatre, I repeat. They are usually stumped after that.)

Q: How do you make a living?
(In theatre. I may or may not go on to say that Toronto is the third largest English-speaking theatre city after NY and London and Canada is the leader in all languages of published... [more]

Ask post: Clothes make the me.
Darts are quite easy to do, so just about any decent tailor can do them. Try Chinatown, since they probably do petite quite often as well. There are the stores, but I think they overcharge for doing something as simple as pant-legs or darts. In my experience, the most inexpensive tailors are retired ladies who watch their grandkids during the day and have wicked skills. (Gross generalization, I know.) They advertise by putting things up at bulletin boards or on utility poles. Give them... [more]

Ask post: How do you work with your literary agent
I love my literary agent. The first year I was with her, I was so impressed with her and all her connections, that I grilled her about what I should write and then I would write some samples and we would work on them and she would arrange conference calls for me with directors and I would take notes and...nothing. Nada. I couldn't write that way. I was never inspired and thus never had the time because I was too busy working on stuff that I actually wanted to work on.... [more]

Ask post: How did they know he had a ham?
On the way home to Canada after a year in India, my boyfriend wanted to bring a particular fruit with him. A jamun (sp?) fruit? Anyway, he'd thought he take a chance and bought a whole crate before getting on the flight in Delhi and worse comes to worse he'd eat them all on the plane or hand them out and the entire flight would get fresh fruit. At this point, he wasn't even sure he'd be allowed onto the plane with a crate of fresh fruit, but no one bat an eye. Fine. Whatever. He changed planes... [more]

Ask post: a love problem
She is imagining alot about what goes on between a director and an actor becomes as you say, she is not an artist, and so by default I imagine doesn't know what is actually going on. Without concrete information she is only going to continue to fictionalize this in her head. Can you explain in a very professional and practical way what happens in an audition situation? Can you explain the approach towards working with plays with sexual content? Giving her concrete information may help with... [more]

Ask post: undies for under my dress
Nthing panty lines are not an issue. The fabric/dress is very structured, so it will obscure any visible lines. Yellow and blue are bright and fantastic together, but I am not sure what colour shoes you can wear with that. Another option, is to wear the silver shoes, and find a nice woven (ie. holey) silver wrap. (Not a fabric wrap, but one woven with a subtle thread of silver, in something quite fluid, like silk.) Then the silver acts as a neutral and we see the fabulous dress!

Ask post: Cheap and portable signs for a protest?
1. Old white sheet.
2. Cheap paint

Result: Nice big multi-person sign! Hold it lengthwise across a few people as you march. For transport, roll it up and stick it in a backpack. Nice visual impact too.

Ask post: Help me win this spicy proposal
Can you eat anything before you eat the peppers? If so, I would eat some yogurt, and drink milk and get a good coating in your mouth. That might give you a longer tolerance time since the milk will counteract the spiciness to some extent. You can almost eat half as it is, the milk might take you over the top!

If they say they cannot help you, ask to speak to a different person. Ask post: What Part/Full-Time Jobs Allow Lots of Reading Time?
My boyfriend used to do night security at condos. The pay was good enough, and you were left alone unless there was an emergency. Depending on the site, basically the lower the pay, the fewer the hassles. The higher the pay, the greater the hassles (read less goofing off time.) Not only did he read copiously, he also surfed the net, wrote a screenplay, completed some online courses, did tai chi, called his family overseas, meditated etc. etc. Yeah, it worked out pretty well for years until he... Ask post: Thermos or Food jar
I have two stainless steel themoses of that brandname, one big, one medium. They are incredible, and have no problem keeping liquid hot for 8 hours or more. When I'm acting and we have 12 hour days, I would often open my thermos at the end of the day and drink the steaming tea I had prepared in the morning. BUT that is liquid, and not solid food. Solid food never stayed hot more than a few hours. Maybe preparing more soups or saucy foods that have a chance at staying hotter longer?

Ask post: Head devices for better enunciation?
In theatre school, our speech teacher endorsed using a cork from a wine bottle. I can't quite remember what we did with the cork, though I recall carrying it around for most of my first year. I think we held it by our lips, while doing tongue/articulation exercises trying not to dislodge it. It was also a measure of how relaxed and open our jaws were as we learned to open up for more resonance/projection. Eventually, the theory was that you should be able to hold the cork in your mouth... [more]

Ask post: Limited run do run run?
Would you ever use 'limited release' in reference to a book?
posted to Ask Metafilter by typewriter at 6:19 AM on February 3, 2008
The fictional publisher in question has the worldwide rights, but is holding off for lots of reasons, but primarily because the book may be controversial in other parts of the world. The publisher thinks the book will actually sell well in North America, so it is less about the being a limited number.

'A North American run'? Does that sound reasonable out the mouth of an experienced publisher?

thanks.

I thought I had no backbone either, but I am growing one with the help of a new app. I am currently using a program called RescueTime in beta that tracks your computer usage than shows that info to you in various graphs. You tag your applications however you want, so I can see bar graphs with 'procrastination', 'timewaster', 'work'. After I tracked my usage for a week, I was pretty ashamed and shocked to see how much time I actually wasted when I really, really needed to be working. I showed... [more]

Ask post: Can I get into America with this ID?
On a recent road-trip, my Welsh-born friend didn't have her passport, but did have her citizenship card (Photo I.D.) and her birth certificate card. She was travelling with Canadian citizens with passports. We got through fine.

If you know that birth certificate plus ID works then that plus your OHIP card and/or your expired passport should probably be okay. Your passport might be expired, but it is still decent photo I.D.

Ask post: What type of yoga should I take?
Since you are already quite active, I would suggest Ashtanga. It is as occiblu describes quite active and moves through series of postures quickly. Not necessarily to make you sweat, but for you to 'keep heat'. The heat in your body is necessary as you become more advanced in the postures (eg. become more flexible.) It is aerobic, but that is not it's intent. The balance component is built into the various postures. I don't know that you would be challenged enough by Hatha classes to stay... [more]

lostburner is in his early twenties - he can totally get away with it! Dark blue jeans, not black, white dress shirt or t-shirt. Walk with pride. A black leather coat is still fairly neutral; the length makes it unusual, but not unwearable. He's not asking to wear it to the grocery store. He wants to know if he can still wear it out. I say go for it!

Ask post: Will you marry me (even if I don't spend 2 months of my salary on a ring)?
Really, the answer as everyone says depends on what your fiancée thinks.

More data which may or may not be useful:
By most definitions I am a girly-girl. I have been known to wear pink. I have more pairs of shoes than days of the week. I have a dressing table. I like cupcakes.

Engagement ring? No way.

Take that with a grain of salt, because also:
White dress? Hell no.
Wedding ring? Probably not.
Wedding? Very unlikely.

Now, when I get migraine (which is pretty rare) I have some coke and tylenol. And I know that it is not a caffeine withdrawal headache because I usually still have/have had my regular cafffeine for the day (maybe 1 or 2 cups of coffee.)

I'm not sure that you can conclude that it is a Chinese game from that info, but that's what she said! And she's as Uyghur as you can get!
