Arach No Phobia
With all due respect, why on earth wouldn't you be compassionate to someone in fear? It seems like something that would come from your innate humanity, not logic or reason.

Memorializing fans in-medium
At the beginning of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, a "Natalie McDonald" is sorted into Gryffindor House. Natalie McDonald was a young terminally ill Potter fan who wrote to Rowling before her death asking how the story would end.

When In Rome...
This year I'm borrowing a cane and some white Tic-Tacs and going as House.
I did that last year. Right down to the Tic-Tacs. Great minds, etc.

How to bring up awkward family problems with boyfriend?
Go ahead and ask him. His family troubles may not be any of your business, but his emotional well-being is: he's your friend and your romantic partner.
Just let him know you've noticed the tension in his life and remind him you're there if he needs an ear. It's all you can really do, but there's no reason you shouldn't do it.

Strange Bedfellows
MetaFilter: I wish you would die. Why don't you die?
The Alberta government has started an awareness campaign for kids, teaching them how to recognize internet "perverts" and their methods, and what to do if they're approached.
That sort of thing seems more productive than this sort of thing.

What songs use the "song on the radio within the song" effect?
Live, Radiohead introduce "Climbing Up the Walls" and "The National Anthem" by holding a small portable radio up to a microphone and playing a few seconds of a local talk or classical station. The I Might Be Wrong: Live Recordings album has an example of this.

Do younger people pay with folding money only?
I'm 22 and have been a "change manipulator" (I love it!) since I worked as a grocery-store cashier five years ago. I even have a little leather change purse.
Yes, I said 22, not 72.

Looking for an Apple IIe War Game
I totally remember this; I had it on my 8086, and my fourth-grade classroom had the board game. Let me call my brother and see if he remembers the name—it had an X or a Z in it, I'm almost positive.

An eye for an eye amidst the culture of life
You know, I'm generally a touchy-feely bleeding-heart librul on the idea of the death penalty, but after reading your second link, I'm pretty OK with the idea of this guy getting put to death.
Hypocrisy: it's what's for breakfast.

riotgrrl69, I agree with everything you said. But my uncivilized gut is apparently making an exception for this guy.

I wish Matt could half-ban dios. Keep the clever, slightly twisted guy with a sense of humour who posts fascinating and offbeat FPPs, but kick to the curb the troll who drops into left-leaning posts to shit on them with responses that have nothing to do with the actual link(s).

Dios and matteo have a lot in common.
So they do.
Clearly this calls for a cage match of some sort.

I feel fresh as a bagel!
I used to be really, really into Homestar Runner, bought loads of merch, watched everything they put out, and then one day I just stopped finding it entertaining.
I'm not saying that it's intrinsically unfunny or anything, and the creators are to be commended (bitterly envied, really) for the manner and extent of their success, but I guess I had a finite appetite for it.

OK, fine. "I need to be kicked in the face!" "I can do it! I will do it nine times!" is still fucking hilarious.

There are people who are born with the standard equipment and, uh, bifurcate themselves as adults.
And then put pictures of that on the internet.
I wish they wouldn't.

I do think of them. And then I go back to downloading porn off BitTorrent at 650 KB/s. HA.

Turner cuts Smoking Scenes
The only current TV show I can think of that depicts non-villainous, non-guest-star characters smoking cigarettes is Battlestar Galactica.
