Go ahead and ask him. His family troubles may not be any of your business, but his emotional well-being is: he's your friend and your romantic partner.

Just let him know you've noticed the tension in his life and remind him you're there if he needs an ear. It's all you can really do, but there's no reason you shouldn't do it.

lonefrontranger, one of the things I cut from the still-overlong question is that we did in fact make the decision to do the relationship counselling together. The answer is, in every case I've ever experienced, proprietary Windows software. They plug a USB cable into the wide port at the bottom of the phone; there's usually an "phone upgrade" or "clone address book" option that lets them copy your data with a couple of clicks.

Bowls of vinegar have worked for me in the past.

Heating a pot of vinegar to a gentle boil on the stove worked really well, though I don't recommend it if you dislike the smell of vinegar. (It just made me hungry for chips.)

Have a look through the Samsung and T-Mobile sections at Howardforums. Do a thorough search before asking, both with the forum's own search function and a "site:howardforums.com" google search—people there are touchy about answering questions twice.

Howard Forums is the place to go for sure, but beware: I (thought I'd) followed a set of instructions exactly and ended up bricking my phone beyond recovery.

Getting PST and p2kman to work on a real Windows box was, for me, an two-day exercise in massaging device drivers that just didn't seem to want to fit into place. I'm pretty reckless (see above), but I don't know that I'd dare try this on a Mac.

xAct is a drag-and-drop converter for all kinds of fancy audio formats: drag the FLACs from the Finder to the xAct "decode" window, select AIFF, and hit the button: the resulting files will open just fine in iTunes, where you can convert them to AAC or MP3 or Apple Lossless or what have you.
