Signing a contract over email?
I scanned my signature once into a jpeg. In Acrobat professional, I saved it as a stamp. Now I just print doc to pdf, then type out my information, and choose and place signature on the bottom of the document. It's that simple.

How to balance my budget and my social life?

Eat before you go, and just have a salad or appetizer. Or, alternatively, show up near the end of the meal and just order a drink.
Terrible idea. Last thing you want to to be part of a split check and pay $60 for food/drink you didn't even have.

Cash a check day before pay day?
Or do they cash it, take a day or more to process it - by which time the money has been deposited - and then everything is fine?
Check processing is much faster since Check 21 was passed. The money will go out of your account overnight.. So if you don't have the funds by the end of the business day, you're in trouble.
Do they cash it, process it right away, discover that I have insufficient funds, and then hit me... [more]

Help me securely share folders across different networks
I use Hamachi (to share itunes) and tried this but the work desktop is on a domain (can't switch to a workgroup) and the laptop can't go on this domain. So that option didn't work for me.

Actually, I have full admin rights on the desktop. I could opt out of the domain [windows won't let me be on a domain AND a workgroup simultaneously] but it would prevent me from automatic backup to remote servers, printers etc.

I'm a dummy. I had the old hamachi vpn running in my taskbar. I didn't know they specifically made an application for file sharing. Thanks everyone!

Please save my sanity from PowerPoint 2007.
I love PP 2007. There is a learning curve but the entire program is much cleaner and the fonts are crisper so much so that I cringe every time I see '03 (or just any office drop down menu).
My suggestion is that you spend an hour just clicking all the options and making a dummy presentation. The help is much better in this version too. I used it my first week and the help results were spot on.

If I think it's a scam, it is a scam -right?
There are dozens of honest listings on craigslist. Just find another one. This sounds like a scam. I am not sure why you and your wife keep pursuing this more and more with each alarm bell.
I've managed to extract a UK number for him.
But why? If I tried to rent a place and the landlord didn't have keys, the right address, or the correct rent in mind, I would instantly drop it and move on. You should do the same.... [more]

Computer Freezes but mouse still moves
Restart your computer. After it passes the bios screen, press F8 and choose "Last good known configuration". Hopefully that will fix. If not, repeat the same thing and choose safe mode and uninstall and recent additions.

Yeah, just try reinstalling. That should definitely take care of it.

PhD in NYC, money?
Seconding Johnny assay and esch.
Most graduate school contracts prohibit outside employment (mine does).
Second, you're expecting to have boat loads of free time. Trust me, you won't. The 20 hour/week assessment is not accurate. It may be lower or higher. As an experienced TA, I don't spend more than 8 hours a week for my teaching job (includes everything). However, it might be way more than 20 hours if it were a class I didn't know so well.... [more]

Cassette to iPod
If you have a desktop with a free slot, this is an option. It's a bit pricey though ($109). If you have a little more to spend, this works with a desktop/laptop via usb and transfers cassette audio to itunes mp3 with a few clicks.
You could also just hook up a regular old walkman (get one on ebay if you don't have one), and hook up the audio output to a microphone input on your PC and just use a recording program (sorry I don't have suggestions for one).... [more]

Starting a PhD, time to start a lab notebook?
I'm also an ecologist. In addition to field notebooks, I also maintain a set of moleskine journals. I don't write in them everyday but on days that I do field/lab work [not writing], I write a short paragraph on what transpired. My data notebooks capture real data but there will be days when no real data gets collected [e.g. days when I set up experiments, try prototypes etc. but don't collect data]. These notebooks come in handy to look up and piece togather dates where nothing of note happened... [more]

When grad school funding doesn't materialize
These sorts of things happen all the time in academia. I've been paid out of obscure grants many many times. Yes people sometimes say "Well, I have no idea how to pay you from this grant..." but there's ALWAYS a way around it. Academics are bad with money and departmental accountants are just wonderful at shuffling money around to make it work.
Example: A few months ago, I got part of my salary from a different department, that could not employ me (because of... [more]

Reporting bad/dangerous drivers
seconding Ashreah. In Cali we are indeed encouraged to call 911 to report erratic/possibly drunk, or aggressive drivers. I can't imagine you can't do the same. I mean, the person you are reporting is, at that moment, a threat to other drivers on the road.

Used Car Transfer
I believe that the seller is legally required to smog the car before selling it. That's what happened in my case. The certificate is electronically transmitted to the DMV so when you register it should already be in the system. If owner refuses, go look for a new car.

PS: On preview I see that you already have the car. You should call the DMV and check if the car has already been smogged.

Amazon and eBay best practices?
FWIW, don't ship internationally for Amazon sales. I just shipped a book and I got $12 credit. Actual cost of shipping was $20.50 (and no delivery confirmation). Never ever doing that again.

Is there public transport to Bodega Bay?
I work in Bodega Bay and yes, public transport to get there is very very limited but possible. Your friend could take the Amtrak to Santa Rosa. Then from there, there is one shuttle a day.
From my lab's webpage (scroll down a bit):
Limited to one shuttle bus from Santa Rosa. This shuttle bus runs once a day and you must walk 1.5 miles to the bus stop, (unless, of course, you are able to get a ride from your sponsor or others). The bus... [more]

Good point gingerbeer. The two towns are 5 mi apart (should be very easy to hitch a ride). The schoolhouse is in Bodega but the rest of it was mostly filmed in Bodega Bay. The road where the kids run down hill is actually in Bodega Bay (Taylor road), so is the farm house (which is now the site of the marine lab) and the Tides (which now serves overpriced bad food and cheap souveniers).
There's some other cool stuff for Hitchcock buffs (a bridge he built for the movie).... [more]

Save me from working over the weekend!
One solution I can come up with is to do this in php. You can export the excel file as text and dump all the pdfs in a separate directory. Then read email file into an array, loop through till the end, and use the mail function to send individual emails with the corresponding pdf attachment.
It should take just a few lines of code.

I need a catchy title for a spring dinner fundraiser
Frank: There may be more than one organization involved so I don't think they want to use the name in the main title [the flyer will say something like Farm coalition A and B present...]
Last year it was in July and was called a midsummer nights local feast. So something along those lines would be great.
