MeTa post: Too much tragedy for one thread
My own random thoughts on this based on recent events in my state...

Utah has a very large number of concealed weapons holders in this state, but none of those people were able to stop the recent massacre in Salt Lake City.

I'm personally against gun control and like the idea of conceal carry, but I don't think VT's ban on concealed weapons necessarily did anything to make this situation worse. I would think an ordinary civilian with a pistol... [more]

MeTa post: No fucking way is this bearable on MeFi....
Unlike some of you, I was a plushie pr0n virgin until now. And I think it was a great post. Not only did it have googly eyes and the best soundtrack ever, but the really cute guy had a great laugh. When was the last time you saw more-or-less genuine laughter in porn? Usually, everyone is so bloody serious.

Also, bonus points for a rim job performed with a giant plastic tongue.

Thanks Grumblebee. After the week I had, I really needed something so... [more]

MeTa post: When someone posts a serious question to AskMe in...
Netzapper said it best when he/she advocated treating this as an engineering problem, not a religious one.

What I don't understand is why people, even secular ones, would have a problem with someone with a rigid code of behavior who has the self-discipline and self-awareness of their surroundings to do what they can to avoid certain things. As someone who has great difficulty controlling his appetites, I have only admiration for those that can maintain control.... [more]

Banning? Fuck no.

So someone's feelings were hurt and their skin is paper thin? I think their energy would be better spent writing a greasemonkey script which would block certain users and keep their delicate sensitivities intact.

Q is an insensitive jerk at times but the site would lose a lot of flavor if he vanished.

PP is annoying but considering the way the majority of posters treat conservative posters here (like... [more]

So what's wrong with newsfilter?

Sure, Metafilter was originally intended as a place to put unique links. But, like any institution with a sustainable population and an extended lifespan, it hass evolved to have a different purpose.

For Metafilter, the discussion has become as important (if not more important) as the links.

So, whats wrong with newsfilter posts when the intent is not to share new information but to... [more]

No need for a link as its becoming all-too-common.

I'm really getting sick of users who think they can express their moral and intellectual superiority over the unwashed mefites with a *YAWN* or two. Why do posters even bother expressing their (metaphorically) gaping mouth? Do they think they'll be instantly crowned as Metafilter taste-makers whose very deep breath will cause the offending post to be sucked down their dried esophagus?

If you are... [more]

I know this is a 'get off my lawn you damn kids!' kinda post but I've been real irritable of late, with the lumbago acting up and all...

I'm also really sick of the chorus which screams 'Double Post!' for posts whose original was over six months ago. I recently saw a cry of 'double post' over something originally posted three years ago. Why can't they realize everything old is new again, eventually, and just leave it the hell alone.

damn kids.

I've seen metatalk threads over all sorts of silly things.

I decided I would post one about an issue which threatens the very foundations of our civilization. Why you do not see the importance of this, I do not understand.

Still, I'm glad you're still capable of fishy astonishment. Its always good to have a sense of wonder.

If you really want to know why people smoke (and why some of them get hooked) and you weren't just being snarky, I'm arrogant enough to think an earlier post of mine to Metafilter sums up the issue nicely and completely:

Nicotine is one of the greatest drugs known to mankind. It can instantly calm nerves, significantly reduce depression without sexual side effects (a far more effective anti-depressant than prozac), focus the mind and provide a... [more]
