Too many presents

My neighbor is very generous - too generous! Her young son and my kids play together fairly often, and each time my kids go to their house to visit, my neighbor sends my kids home with several gifts. Sometimes if she sees my kids playing in the back yard she just hands gifts over the fence. Last time it was a large tin of cookies, a box of Whoppers candies, and a Vitamin Water style drink. In the past gifts have included a hand-knit scarf, brand new clothes, a doll, a box of donuts, and a large plate of homemade fried chicken. At Lunar New Year she gave each of my kids ten bucks plus a box of sweet rolls. I don’t know this woman well at all. We’ve said ‘hi’ a few times but her English is limited and I don’t speak her language which I believe is Thai. I get the sense that our different expectations around gift giving are related to cultural differences (she’s an immigrant from SE Asia, I’m white, born and raised in California), and maybe also that she is just a particularly (or maybe compulsively) gift-giving person.

Microbiology filter

Is it fair to say that the cells that a particular virus uses to reproduce itself are the cells where symptoms of the disease will tend to manifest?

Did Ferraro cry?

I was sure I remembered that Geraldine Ferraro cried during the 1984 presidential election, and that the media made the event into a symbol of why women are too weak to hold national office, but now I can't find a headline or news article from that time that mentions her crying. Am I getting this mixed up with Pat Schroeder's famous breakdown when she dropped out?

Proper noun problem:

You capitalize "The Civil War", right? And you capitalize "The Civil Rights Movement", right? Do you capitalize "The Women's Movement"? Do you capitalize "The Anti-Globalization Movement"? What about the "Spay and Neuter 'Movement'"? Is every specific movement or event in history considered a proper noun – and if not, why not? Do I get to just arbitrarily decide what to capitalize in these sorts of examples, or is there some 'rule' that only applies to historic events that hold a certain level of significance – and who decides what is significant enough?

Well-written memoirs and autobiographies

What are your favorite autobiographies? For the purposes of this discussion, I'm including "autobiographies" that were written collaboratively (like Alex Haley's The Autobiography of Malcolm X) or that were straight up written by someone else (like Gertrude Stein's The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas). The point is, the book is written from the point of view of the subject and it's (ostensibly at least) non-fiction.

Make science simple

I was a high school dropout and didn't go to college, and now I'm trying to catch up, working towards a degree in a science/health field. This semester I'm taking Chemistry (an introductory level class) and Anatomy and Physiology. I'm doing OK in my classes, but certain concepts are coming pretty slowly.

I'm going insane and I think it's the cheese

Do you remember those "It's the Cheese" billboards from the late 90s? They attributed various qualities of California to its cheese? Well I'm trying to find an image of one specific one, or at least remember exactly what it said. I know the term "excellent body" was part of the board, and I believe there was an image of two aging male dairy farmers. Google image and regular searches have not prooven helpful.

Help me be compelling

Have you ever been on a guided walking tour? What did you like about it? What did you dislike? Was the subject matter most important, or the presentation? How long was it? Was it focused narrowly (like, sites to pick up dudes in the Castro) or more broadly (like, the history of Manhattan) I would love to hear as much detail as possible about the walking tours that have bored you, thrilled you, or just made your feet hurt. Thank you!

If I knew what to look up in the manual, I would!

irritatinglybasicfilter: I made a really big picture in photoshop. It is about 5 feet long. I want to print it, but I can only print one page of the whole picture - a small section of the whole thing. I looked at the photoshop help pages, and searched askme and the internet for help, but I'm afraid I know too little to even understand where to look for the answer to my dumb question. If it matters (I suspect it doesn't), I'm using CS version 8 on my Mac.

Choking - yea or neah

Kinkfilter: I know there’s a big campaign to discourage kids from playing the choking game, and I know people die from autoerotic asphyxiation all the time, but

Help me Brits!

Where can I find recordings of Zappa influenced Sons of Mr. Greengenes, former band of alt-movie heartthrob Cillian Murphy? (As far as I know they never released anything, but they played for a few years and were offered a record deal, so there have got to be Demo tapes somewhere!)

Help me clothe my geek!

I want to buy a t-shirt for a friend with the Mac spinning circle - the one you see when you're waiting for something to happen - not the one that is the spinning beach ball. I swear I saw one on the internet once, but now I can't find it. Any idea who sells them?

Help me get drunk in style!

Inspired by this New Orleans drinking post, but not ready to commit to making my own, I must know: Where in the San Francisco Bay Area can I order a Sazerac? (If you can tell me of a bar that makes them in Oakland, I’ll buy you one.)

Don't make me hate my Mac!

I recently signed up for an Internet based math class. After registering, I discovered that although the class is primarily internet based, you must also download its software in order to complete homework assignments and take tests. The software is not Mac compatible, and I'm on a Mac. Doh!!

Advice on privacy in simple terms please

What software should I use/purchase to protect my privacy on the internet? (I'm sure this question has been asked before, but in my archive searches I couldn't find an answer in plain English that I could follow. Feel free to send me the link to any previous discussion on this!)

What should I listen to?

I spend most of my work day listening to interview and essay type radio shows on the internet. My favorite, of course, is This American Life. I also love Fresh Air . I've checked out Radio 4 a little, and sometimes I listen to Democracy Now and even more rarely Air America. Keeping in mind what I already like, what else would you recommend I listen to?

Make my car go away for free?

Recently, my little '90 Civic was towed away. Perhaps it was the fact that my car had been unregistered since November. Or it could have been the $900 in unpaid tickets.

I want a Peugeot. Am I insane?

I'm looking for a diesel that I can cram my kids, dog, girlfriend and friends into. (I posted previously about this.)For some reason I'm now obessed with getting a used Peugeot. I live near San Francisco. How would I go about finding a Peugeot? (They aren't sold new in the US.) I called a local European car repair shop and asked who sells them used and he said "no one". Not promising. Any ideas?

I hate cars but...

I want a car that carries more than 5 passengers AND gets good fuel economy! I did see some similar recent posts on this question, but not explicitly including the more than 5 seating issue! Right now I drive a tiny civic hatch back. I don't care about having a BIG car, I just want a car that can carry more people than the members of my immediate family. I hate to switch from 35 mpg to the 18 that even the most efficient minivan provides. Any creative seating solutions (Optional rear bench? Back facing station wagon seating?) will be considered!
