Ask post: Help me find movie recommendations for a 50+ mom who won't watch anything that has violence or doesn't have a happy ending.
Thanks for all the info everyone, I'm compiling a list to give to my mother in law!

Ask post: Should I attend a co-workers wife's funeral?
Thanks all, you've convinced me, I think I'll go.

Thanks also for clearing up the etiquette issues - I really wasn't sure whether it was appropriate or not to attend if you hadn't been asked.

Thanks for that The Monkey, it's not a Maori funeral (the co-worker his wife are actually Dutch). Glad about the "I'm sorry for your loss" tip, I'll try to avoid saying that if the circumstances call for it.

I just got back a couple hours ago. I just wanted to say thank you so much to everyone who responded, I think you were all spot on with your advice.

The coworker was sharing the fears that his wife had communicated to him about dying just a week or two before she died, and one of these was that no one would come to her funeral. It made us all laugh because there were about 80-100 people there, but it made me doubly happy that I went.

Ask post: Travel dates in the months before passport expiration
If I were you I'd just go ahead and renew your passport. It's usually a relatively painless and fast process, and the last thing you want to worry about while you're abroad is passport issues.

Ask post: Is my neighbor a prostitute?
My neighbors exhibit almost identical behavior, except they don't have kids and the guys stopping by always go in through the back door. However I'm pretty sure my lady neighbor is selling weed rather than herself.

Ask post: Please give me your best mexican recipes
Hi, thanks for all the answers so far. To clarify yes I'm primarily after recipes I can make at home. Obviously I can get recipes off the net or from a book but those don't always come out quite how I expect them too, so I'm hoping for recipes people have actually tried and found successful. But all the answers are helpful to be honest, so thank you!

Try anything from Peter Jackson's early movies. Check out these from Brain Dead:

Rat Monkey

Zombie baby

Zombies

And, from Bad Taste, a head thing.

Ask post: Chkdsk has eaten my computer
It says STOP: 0x00000024 (0x00190203 0x82BDF2E0 0xC0000102 0x00000000 ) on the bsod.

Running the hard drive self-test yields a #1-07 fail.

I've backed up the data by running Ubuntu off a Live CD, so I also have limited access to the hard disk.

Ask post: work misery
No one has the right to bellow at you, period. The next time he does it just say "Look, if you cant speak to me civilly when I make a mistake then even don't bother speaking to me at all." You're right, he is a caveman.

Ask post: Is this a great idea or flight of fancy I will regret?
To give a slightly different perspective:

I think getting an RN is a wise idea in terms of salary and employment opportunities, but it's not always the best choice in terms of job satisfaction. If you're the kind of person who genuinely likes to help people that will go a long way, but nurses are often over worked and hospitals are under staffed, and it can be very stressful depending on what kind of nursing you're interested in getting into.

Hell no. I was all about bad-boy punk types my whole life and ended up head over heels for a glasses-wearing former role-playing english lecturer who's like full on wholesome.

Ask post: How can I get my doctor to take me seriously about my libido problems?
I agree with all the "it could be the pill" comments - it's happened to me too.

Getting a physician or nurse to take your concerns seriously can be a daunting task, especially in a culture that's disinclined to care much about women's sexual issues. The best that you can do is to be assertive, and if you're not getting the level of service that you expect then switch to someone who will listen to your concerns.

This may sound weird,... [more]

Ask post: When to give an allowance?
I didnt get a regular allowance - my siblings and I were expected to keep our rooms tidy and help out on the weekends. If we wanted money we could do above that, eg. if I washed the dishes for the whole week = 20 bucks. Although now my sister gets paid 50$ for the same work. INFLATION!

Ask post: Should an illegal alien go to med school or nursing school?
My mom is an RN in California; from what I recall correctly, before the Board of Registered Nurses will license an RN they have to have a background check done, with fingerprinting and everything, and (I think?) get federal clearance - so your friend would show up as being illegal, or at any rate as not having any kind data on file with the federal govt. So in short, no, I dont think your friend can just choose nursing and hope that the shortage will bear her out.

Ask post: Coming out to young people
If anyone asks you a question that personal, ie "OMG, butt secks, wut?!?!11?", you're perfectly within your rights to direct the Icy Stare(tm) at them, and inform them, in whatever phrasing you prefer, that they're being incredibly gauche. Dont feel obligated to educate people with no manners. Gay people arent any more obliged to answer questions that cross the line of good taste than straight people are.

Ask post: Doc, I Think I'm A Quart Low
I asked my mom who is an RN:

Every unit or two of blood (she cant remember the exact amount) is known to raise the hematocrit by so much. So you start by looking at the base hematocrit, and then transfuse units based on what their normal hematocit value (which is different for men and women) should be. If the person is asymptomatic, and their hematocrit is in the 20s, the doctor will often start with 2 units of blood.

Blood pressure is not... [more]

Ask post: In marriage, what is more powerful: Love or God?
For what it's worth, my fiances dad is a hardcore atheist and his mom is a christian. They've been married for 30 years and raised 5 kids together without any problems. I think if two people love each other (and respect each other) they'll find a way to work stuff out. I think the same can be said of the raising of children: if you love them and respect them, you'll tell them what both of you believe and allow them to make up their own minds. I'm not saying it would be easy - I cant imagine... [more]

Ask post: When to go to wine country?
I grew up in Sonoma county, I think the best times of year are definitely fall and spring/early summer. Be aware though, both seasons are really brief - for instance it was pouring rain in Sonoma county til just a couple weeks ago, and now is apparently up around 90 degrees, according to my mom. I would recommend visiting around May-June or September-October, if you want to miss the hottest or wettest weather.

Ask post: Jailbird!
Will he be serving time in the Santa Rosa county lock up? I'm from Sonoma county, and most of the law enforcement personnel I've met from there have been pretty cool for the most part. I had an uncle who was at the Santa Rosa facility for a couple days and it didnt seem like it was that big a deal to him - he said that he guards were okay but the food sucked (duh, like prison food is ever good.). As long as your friend doesnt go crazy broadway style I dont think he's in for an ass whipping... [more]

Ask post: Music for those Goddamn Liberals?
I second CCR's "Fortunate Son". Also recommend The Dead Kennedys' "The Man With The Dogs", and Matthew Sweet's "Holy War" (I don't know what's going on
In the scenes behind
I worry about it some of the time
And I hope there's not a war
Cause I'm not in for killing another man
Defending my holy land
As if there's a god who would understand)

Ask post: When is flirting inappropriate?
I think everyone has a different baseline for what's appropriate and what's not; my own rule of thumb is that I wont do anything I wouldn't be comfortable doing with my fiance standing right there. The fact that I would have to (for all intents and purposes) hide my actions from him implies to me that I feel guilty about it on some level - thus, I choose not to overtly flirt with other men, period.

Ask post: Prolific Proposal
My fiance took me to Armstrong National Park and proposed to me on the stage of the forrest theater. I spent a lot of my childhood in that park, so it was special to me personally that it was there. What was wacky about it was the first time he pulled me up on the stage some totally drunk yokels took that moment to wander by, so he just kind of stood there awkwardly til they left. After they toddled off he dropped to one knee and blurted out "Marry me babe!" I think the interruption... [more]

Ask post: Why do you enjoy shopping?
I do like to shop. Both actual shopping and window shopping. Like some people have said upthread, it's mostly because stuff is pretty. I get aesthetic satisfaction from looking at cool dinnerware, or shiny glasses, or well contructed furniture, or interesting textiles. It's a sensory thing for me.

I'm also hoping to go into product design at some point, so wandering stores presents me with inspiration.

Ask post: Films about revenge
This question is a couple days old, so I dont know if you'll see this slimepuppy, but a great set of movies that deal with revenge are Jean de Florette and Manon des Sources. It's basically one long movie broken into two, where the first one Jean de Florette is the setup, and the second deals with the revenge and fallout from it. And I second Kill Bill.

Ask post: When was the last time you changed your mind?
I was pro-death penalty til 9/11. After that I decided I couldnt stomach people intentionally killing other people, no matter who was doing the killing. I also used to be agnostic, til I took a biology class and now I'm an atheist. My fiance used to be a christian til he made a good friend (online) who was gay, and decided his belief that his friend was a good person wasnt compatible with what the bible was telling him; now he's an atheist too. Abortion is something I struggle with: I strongly... [more]

Ask post: Cinque Terre and Rome lodging
My parents were in Rome recently, and stayed at The Hotel Meridiana which is right near the Vatican. It is a little more expensive than you're looking for I think (80 euro a night?) but it's supposed to be really nice and have a kick ass breakfast.
