Finally, I just want to throw out the idea that a lot of women I know who have been sexually assaulted are genuinely unsure if the perpetrator is even aware that they violated consent. Especially when substances are involved, nonconsensual sex is incredibly easy to rationalize. Rape happens all the time. And it seems to me that it's not about maliciousness as much as it is about entitlement.

During the summer between 7th and 8th grades I read almost everything Stephen King had written to that point. I used to think Tommyknockers was actually pretty decent, but having read Lovecraft now I really think it's mostly a rip of The Colour Out Of Space. Like a lot of people here I liked the DT series til the 4th book at which point I thought it derailed itself.

I didn't find the "Rules for the Non Military" particularly repugnant until the end, when it informs that the soldier gives us the right of free speech, and also anyone daring to sing our national anthem in Spanish should have their ass kicked.

I think it's neat that however you feel about the show or Joss, this even takes a concept Joss tries to get across (women are people too!) and couples it with an organization that pushes this point (women are people too!) funded by people who think maybe that women are people too. Thanks for this post! I only recently got turned onto Lovecraft, I've made my way through most of his best-known stuff. If you get the three penguin editions (The Thing On The Doorstep, The Call of Cthulhu and The Dreams In The Witch House) they cover almost every single work of his between them. I dont get the hate for tattoos either. I have four of them, and I love them, and yeah they're all for personal reasons. My fiance, otoh, would never dream of getting one because of the whole "one hat for the rest of your life issue." It is what it is, no need to get all hysterical about it.

When I first moved to NZ it took me a while to get used to the wacky different-sized-and-colored money. It still kind of looks like play money to me. On the other hand, now when I visit the states I find myself very annoyed with dollar bills and pennies. Seriously, 1 and 2 dollar coins are the way to go, so much more convenient. And is the US the only country that still uses pennies? No one else cares about that crap, they just round up or down and everyone's couches are much cleaner for it.

I dont have a dog (although I like them) - can someone who has a dog please explain the appeal of bringing one to the bar with you? What kind of bar situation do you picture taking your dog to? I can kind of see the appeal of a relaxed pub environment, but my experience with most bars (admittedly limited) is that they're often very loud and crowded. I just cant feature it as the kind of thing a dog would enjoy.

I may be naive, but as far as home protection goes I dont see what people honestly think a gun will achieve that a taser or a stun gun wont. You might have to get a little closer yeah, but on the other hand if little Timmy finds your taser the worst he'll do is hit his friend Jack with 50k volts, at which point Jack will hopefully wet himself and pass out, leading to hilarity for the whole family.

If the government really wanted to crack down on the population, it would be impossible to stop them. You wouldn't be just fighting the cops, you'd be fighting the military, on its home turf, with virtually unlimited access to supplies and reinforcements, and unfettred mobility.
