MeFi post: Food and Beverages in Hungary
No one makes better maharpörkölt than I do. No one. It took me 18 months of trying nearly every day and I finally cracked it. I swear the truth when I say that old Transylvanian women have cried with joy when they've tasted it. I've done a lot of things in life, but I am perhaps most proud of this.

Hungarian food is the best.

My fiance got me the beer and bread yeast a couple years back, which led to him charmingly telling everyone we know how he had given me a yeast infection.

This is spiffy, thanks for posting it. It's bizarre to me that up until today I had never seen a cervix, despite being the proud owner of one.

MeFi post: Beyond Rape: A survivor's journey
Finally, I just want to throw out the idea that a lot of women I know who have been sexually assaulted are genuinely unsure if the perpetrator is even aware that they violated consent. Especially when substances are involved, nonconsensual sex is incredibly easy to rationalize. Rape happens all the time. And it seems to me that it's not about maliciousness as much as it is about entitlement.

A friend of mine was raped at a party by a boy she had had... [more]

MeFi post: # The thunder of his own guns filled him with stupid wonder.
During the summer between 7th and 8th grades I read almost everything Stephen King had written to that point. I used to think Tommyknockers was actually pretty decent, but having read Lovecraft now I really think it's mostly a rip of The Colour Out Of Space. Like a lot of people here I liked the DT series til the 4th book at which point I thought it derailed itself.

MeFi post: >>>>>PASS THIS ON! (emails from the right)
I didn't find the "Rules for the Non Military" particularly repugnant until the end, when it informs that the soldier gives us the right of free speech, and also anyone daring to sing our national anthem in Spanish should have their ass kicked.

I can see why forwarding stuff like this is popular, it's like a mean-spirited "Yeah! Me too!" loop that assures people that others agree with their simplistic racist bullshit.

...you don't find advocating the enforcing of patriotism through brutal beatings to be repugnant?

I should have been clearer, I didn't find anything unexpectedly repugnant. Enforcing patriotism through brutal beatings is part of the expected grossness quotient, like how if you take a bath in shit you're not surprised by the smell so much as what you find in there. Like, "Ew, when did you eat all these pennies?!"

MeFi post: Foreclosure Radar
Ugh, FUCK, I worked as an admin for an agent who did this exact same thing. We were provided a list of people who had defaulted, and I mailed out letters advising that the agent could be of assistance to them. He loved that part because whenever he was confronted he would piously insist that he was "trying to help people", but of course he almost never got any responses from those letters (who *would* respond? I can't even imagine how weird that must be, you're having financial... [more]

I think it's neat that however you feel about the show or Joss, this even takes a concept Joss tries to get across (women are people too!) and couples it with an organization that pushes this point (women are people too!) funded by people who think maybe that women are people too. Or they think Summer Glau is hot. It's still better than tracking down that original Boba Fett thermos, or whatever the fuck it is scifi fans spend their money on.

MeFi post: Weird Tales: The Strange Life of HP Lovecraft
Thanks for this post! I only recently got turned onto Lovecraft, I've made my way through most of his best-known stuff. If you get the three penguin editions (The Thing On The Doorstep, The Call of Cthulhu and The Dreams In The Witch House) they cover almost every single work of his between them. My favorite so far is probably either The Case Of Charles Dexter Ward, or The Shadow Over Innsmouth. I find Lovecraft more unnerving than outright scary, but I never sleep well after reading one of his... [more]

But very time I deal with a smug smartass, I always think to myself, 'you weren't hit enough as a child, otherwise you'd know fear.'

My maternal grandfather used to routinely beat the living shit out of everyone in his family, and my mom as an adult is one of the most opinionated outspoken people I know, so no, I don't think hitting people teaches them humility at all. Quite the opposite if anything. Humility isn't something that can be taught if the... [more]

I dont get the hate for tattoos either. I have four of them, and I love them, and yeah they're all for personal reasons. My fiance, otoh, would never dream of getting one because of the whole "one hat for the rest of your life issue." It is what it is, no need to get all hysterical about it.

I was always told I was smarter than the other kids when I was in grade school, and like EB I always thought of it *exactly* like having athletic ability. As in - so what? It means you're good at doing one kind of thing, it doesnt say anything at all about you as a person, or about your ability in any other area of your life.

MeFi post: It's Our Money, Too
When I first moved to NZ it took me a while to get used to the wacky different-sized-and-colored money. It still kind of looks like play money to me. On the other hand, now when I visit the states I find myself very annoyed with dollar bills and pennies. Seriously, 1 and 2 dollar coins are the way to go, so much more convenient. And is the US the only country that still uses pennies? No one else cares about that crap, they just round up or down and everyone's couches are much cleaner for it.

I dont have a dog (although I like them) - can someone who has a dog please explain the appeal of bringing one to the bar with you? What kind of bar situation do you picture taking your dog to? I can kind of see the appeal of a relaxed pub environment, but my experience with most bars (admittedly limited) is that they're often very loud and crowded. I just cant feature it as the kind of thing a dog would enjoy.

MeFi post: Guns! Guns! Guns! Guns!
I may be naive, but as far as home protection goes I dont see what people honestly think a gun will achieve that a taser or a stun gun wont. You might have to get a little closer yeah, but on the other hand if little Timmy finds your taser the worst he'll do is hit his friend Jack with 50k volts, at which point Jack will hopefully wet himself and pass out, leading to hilarity for the whole family.

If the government really wanted to crack down on the population, it would be impossible to stop them. You wouldn't be just fighting the cops, you'd be fighting the military, on its home turf, with virtually unlimited access to supplies and reinforcements, and unfettred mobility.

I agree, what the hell good is a gun going to do against a force armed with you know, tanks and planes and bombs and whatnot?
