I favourite comments to let the commenter know I'm on their side, but it's nothing against actually being the one to take the hits. I'm sorry for hiding behind you, and I hope you come back. I don't know if I will get the guts to stand up for myself and I am worried that without strong, eloquent, passionate people like yourselves, Metafilter will become a place where I no longer feel welcome.

This is why we can't have nice people.

Dude, the poster says they're giving a friend a gift certificate for their birthday. Nowhere does it indicate they think OMGPSYCHICSARREEL! They might think it sounds like fun. Their friend might have indicated it's something they'd like to try. Their friend might be a fruitloop and think she needs psychic guidance. Since there's no way to know, I dont understand why you automatically assume that the poster is ignorant of the issues surrounding psychics.

Maybe I'm presumptuous, but I kind of assumed y2karl's posting style was done out of courtesy. The opening paragraph gives you the gist of what you'll find the FPP to be about (for easy skim-then-avoid, if that's your prerogative), and the format on the whole clues you in right away as to who wrote it and what the subject is likely to be. Whether it's aesthetically pleasing or not seems to me to be beside the point.

Metatalk is recommended when a thread is being derailed or turning into a flame war. It's not for continuing a flame war, that you started, in a thread that's been vaporized.

If you seriously think that the mods here only let "officially sanctioned viewpoints" you're either new, or have your head so far up your ass you can taste your fillings.

I'd love -- love -- for every new user to have to go through a "Why do you call it 'the green' when it's white?" phase. It'd be just as much fun as "What does '.' mean?". Ohhh, yeah, good times.

Forgive me if this has been addressed, but a way around that might be to just invert the color scheme if you were unregistered/logged out, eg. Ask would be a white background with green text, MeFi would be white with blue text, etc.

Perhaps the easiest way to do it would be some sort of numerical formula, where you subtract points for things like mentioning Bush, Iraq, Apple or the Christian Right and add points for analysis, multiple sources, unique information or artistic merit.

Maybe a quiz based on this idea? "Before posting your FPP, please take our newsfilter quiz." And if the post didnt pass muster, it would just take you to goatse.... [more]

I remember Matt commenting a while back that he was trying to think up some extra features for members who wanted to donate monthly; what if askme questions were more restricted (1 a month, or whatever seems appropriate), but people who wished to sign up to pay a monthly fee could retain the 1 question a week privilege?

Sorry if this has already been suggested, I'm still new to wrangling 100+ comment threads.
