Why were all of our household's phone numbers -- through separate phone companies -- recently removed from the (US) National Do Not Call list? The reasons given on the website don't seem to apply.

To celebrate my 7th MetaFilter Birthday (yay!) here is another track from the band I was in in 1991. This is a cover of a Young Fresh Fellows song. It's a little rough. There's another thing we cover during the intro part before I start singing -- see if you recognize it.

Oh, will I ever regret this one. A couple of years ago in AskMeFi,
I referred to a joke version of "Rapper's Delight" I once did, combined with the riff from the Cure's "Fascination Street". This is that very "rap". It is
very rough -- we just did it as a joke for Halloween 1991, and we practiced it... maybe... once. (You know those goofy things you come up with in practice that crack you up but should never be played in public? Yeah.) So there are lots of screw-ups in the recording.
Lots. But it was a huge hit with our friends, and so for the remainder of that band's short life, we had to play it at every gig. Unfortunately, it was only recorded the first time we played it. Recording notes: this was recorded by someone in the audience on a boombox, but it's not bad considering that. Definitely not high fidelity, though! Also, there's some talking for a minute at the beginning of the track. Despite everything, I think it's kind of fun. But painful. Definitely painful. "Enjoy."
(can you believe we were totally sober when we did this?)

The US Figure Skating championships are this week, but though the ice skaters in Spokane and elsewhere get all the press,
another group of skaters toil in near-obscurity.
Roller figure skaters (also called
artistic roller skaters) skate on
quad (
or sometimes inline) skates, do
all the moves that ice skaters do (and even more -- notice the "heel" and "broken ankle" spins in
this program, spins that are not possible on ice), and compete,
as they have for decades, in local,
national, and
international events. In 1978, skating was at a peak of popularity and
Time magazine wrote
"skaters are hoping to be included in the 1988 Olympics"; nearly 30 years later, roller figure skating still hasn't reached the Olympics, some roller skaters like Tara Lipinski have switched to ice to get famous, and the number of clubs and participants in the US have declined precipitously, but dedicated roller figure skaters still spend many hours practicing
school figures (on circles painted on the floor), dance, and free skating,
for the love of their sport. Want to see more?

Garagey powerpoppy cover of a song by the Pointed Sticks. Recorded almost exactly 15 years ago by
the band I was in at the time, NOT!. (That's the band name. Not a comment on whether we recorded the song. Yes, we had seen
Wayne's World. I'm sorry.) There are some glitches that are on the original tape. I'm singing lead and harmony. I might be playing some rhythm guitar. This was our rowdy set closer, and lots of fun.

MLMFilter: My mother called me and mentioned a "new business" she wants to start. She was very excited about it, and said the business is at
http://www.mywayoutonline.com/, and the company is actually called
PhotoMax. I have my doubts...

It's getting to be time to put together the Christmas mix tapes! This was recorded by a band I was in in 1991. Our new guitar player, Michael Cox, brought us the song so he sings lead. I'm one of the girl background singers (heard best toward the end) and might be playing a tiny bit of guitar (I don't remember for sure), and I know I played some jingle bells near the end of the track (What Christmas song doesn't have bells?). It's a goofy singalong sort of holiday tune. I like it a lot. I wish I had a better quality copy, though.
We recorded this song along with another batch of demos, in time to get airplay on KNDD's local music Christmas show that year... then promptly broke up before even completing all the tracks as a band, though I went in to the studio later to finish. C'est la vie.

Another acoustic living room demo, same lineup as last one. This is an original, inspired by the way the my timing seemed to be so screwed up back in my single days. I'd get a crush on someone who didn't know I existed. Then, sometime later, they'd be interested in me... but I was already over them. Someday I want to record this with a cello in the arrangement.

"It is doubtful that the popular sport in Seattle can survive,"
wrote a Seattle sportswriter in 1966, after three of unlimited hydroplane racing's most popular drivers were killed in one horrific day in Washington, D.C. Forty years later, what was
once the most popular sport in Seattle survives, if not thrives, and
this weekend's Chevrolet Cup will feature boats with safety improvements that trace directly back to the events of "
Black Sunday". But it's nothing like it used to be in the 60s and 70s, when
"winning a hydro race was about the biggest thing a Seattle kid could do," and everyone in town, knew names like the boats
Miss Bardahl,
Miss Budweiser, and the drivers
Bill Muncey,
Chip Hanauer, and
Dean Chenoweth -- and no one, but no one would miss the
Seafair hydro races.

Acoustic cover, me and Chris Otto sharing vocals. Living room demo on Tascam 4-track tape deck, recorded around 8 years ago or so. A song I've always loved to sing. Sorry the last couple of seconds are clipped off; I'm not sure why.

This one is really lo-fi as I don't have the master tape and it's a 21 year old rough demo -- and I do mean rough. :) Recorded Spring 1985 in dorm room A-1016, The Evergreen State College. (More inside.)

Semi-acoustic cover of "Mrs. Green" by the power pop band the Posies. This was done by a 3 piece band (two guitars, one bass) group I was in a while back. (We never could find a drummer, so...) I'm singing lead and also a back up part near the end. The other band members are Chris Otto and Terri Doherty. Chris did lead guitar, backing vocals, and some keys. Terri played bass. I think I did some random percussion and guitar strumming as well. (Please delete when/if covers are determined to be a problem here.)

The impact of the AIDS pandemic over the next 100 years may have effects even more far-reaching than many of us have considered. Joseph Riverson has some thoughts on what it will take to prevent a "Black Death" reality.

Neil Howe and William Strauss have written a series of books (really, the same book rehashed three times, but who's counting?) on generational cycles. Their theory is that we are due for a "fourth turning" in the first part of the 21st century: a catalyst event that causes an extreme change in public mood, causing us to go through a decade or two of crisis. For example, the 1929 stock market crash was a catalyst, and the Depression and WWII were the time of crisis. Was 9/11 such a catalyst?

Following up on
a previous thread, I just posted something with a link to the NYTimes, and it apparently got filtered to channel.nytimes.com... which would be fine except that channel.nytimes.com is reachable. I tried to post a correction before I realized the filtering was at fault, and the correction got filtered too. Then Rebecca tried to post a working URL and hers also got filtered. Needless to say, this adds a lot of noise to the thread. I would vastly prefer the URL to remain to www.nytimes.com; perhaps the filter could instead follow up the post automatically with a link that says "if you want to avoid registration, try this link instead" with a link to channel, so that the content of the post isn't altered?
I wonder if the Times has closed the channel back door, or if the server's temporarily down?

Aslan gets a makeover?
(NYTimes link, reg. required, sorry.) Apparently Harper-Collins and the C.S. Lewis estate see a
Harry Potter-style merchandising bonanza in the Narnian Chronicles -- if they de-emphasize that pesky Christianity, that is, and write a few more Narnia books, and produce some plush toys of the Narnian characters. I feel queasy.
