Yeah, I can just see them giving the report on this.

And then as I read Optimus Chyme's comment about satanic panic I realized I was listening to a track from Of Montreal's Satanic Panic in the Attic. Spoooooooooooky. I don't think anyone could ask for any more clear evidence of these dark forces at work.

MeFi post: Warner Music buys Rykodisc
Man, I guess I'd better go ahead and buy the rest of the albums from Rykodisc on emusic that I was thinking about getting. Squalor's probably right, I'd be surprised if those will be available there much longer.

MeFi post: Opera Mini
I've been using it for a few days on my Samsung A900, and it's pretty awesome. I think the thing that I like most about it is how easy it makes using Backpack and Tada Lists from anywhere. The only thing that's a little annoying is that some sites that have WAP formatted version decide which one to show based on the browser type and with Opera Mini they serve you the full thing instead of the WAP version. It's not too much of a problem since Opera Mini can usually make the full version... [more]

MeFi post: SHMUPS!
Am I the only one that loves these games but thinks that "shmup" is the Dumbest Name Ever? It seems like it's just recently come into use, and I'd like to know who's responsible for that atrocity of an appellation. I grew up just calling these things "shooters" and I'll be damned if I'm going to start calling them "shmups" now.

MeFi post: Flickr Fans to Yahoo: Flick Off!
Wait, so you really have to enter your password everytime you go to Flickr after you merge your accounts? It won't keep you logged in and just take you to your home page? That's ridiculous. I certainly won't plan to merge until they fix that. Flickr is one of those web applications that actually feels like an application rather than a just bunch of connected pages and having to login each time breaks that feeling.

Or, if I'd actually read the Flickr blog post I would have seen:
"Q: OMG, it is really annoying to have to log in to Yahoo over and over many times a day just to get my Flickr fix! [This is not a question.] Uh ... isn't it annoying?!!?

A: Yes, it really, truly is. It's enough to drive one batty. And it's a bug. And a fix will be out soon. It's taken a while, but for security reasons we couldn't do the quick fix here. Just be patient for one

MeFi post: Gas, Grass, or Ass, But No One Rides For Free
What concerns me is how did the cops know the guy had been using the unsecured router for access? Did they check its logs (not likely) or did they just haul the guy in on the word of the network owner? What if I'm driving around, get lost and pull over in front of a house to look up directions on my laptop by connecting through my cell phone. I happen to park in front of the house of some nervous dude with an unsecured wifi network who assumes that I must be using his network and he calls the... [more]

oh... I think I see the problem. Dios is talking about something called "bandwith" while everyone else is talking about bandwidth. Bandwith is indeed personal property while bandwidth is the property of your ISP. Seriously dude, if you're going to go off about something at least learn how it's spelled. Chill out and go get a sanwich or something. /cheap ad hominem

MeFi post: Like a Pepsi Blue coloured rollin' stone
I didn't see much of an improvement over TaDa Lists until they rolled out the Backpack Mobile functionality today. Being able to access my todo lists from my cell phone's crappy little web browser is a thing of beauty. The amazing thing is, it's actually usable in that format, unlike every other WAP web app I've tried to use. Not so much for adding new items, which would be a pain, but its pretty much perfect for checking off shopping lists on the go, and... um, well probably just that.

I just got a new Built to Spill album (released on, unfortunately, Warner Bros) and it won't play on my computer's CD-R drive. Not just unrippable, unplayable. Not that I'm a huge Amazon customer, but I've noticed that they regularly have a greater discount when you preorder something than after it is released. Is it possible that that's all it is and not some bait and switch over the free shipping. The only thing I've ordered from Amazon is a couple anime dvds, and the prices have always gone up after they were released. If you checked the same books before and after they were released, i wouldn't be suprised if they were more expensive.

when record companies control online distribution and charge for everything you hear it does me no good whatsoever. I do not want to buy mp3s, contrary to whatever record companies think. I want to buy albums. I like having a cd, artwork and liner notes. What I want the mp3s for is to hear the music first, so that I know I won't just listen to it once or twice and toss it on the floor of my closet.

Back when higher level languages began to overtake assembly programming, there was a very similar "Now anyone can be a programmer" kind of thought about it. While every layer of abstraction between us and the machine code is certainly helpful in simplifying the process of writing and reusing code, it's not quite that revolutionary. The bulk of the complexity in software comes from the actual design process, not the coding.

I agree argybarg. While I really like being able to find good new music, and check out stuff that before Napster I could only read reviews of, I tend to build up a backlog of music that I never really get around to listening to. Then, when I buy the albums I never really get to give them the time I'd like to listen to and absorb them, because I'm back on Napster getting more new stuff. Still, even without Napster there just isn't enough time to listen to all the music I'd like to. Oh well.... [more]
