Best thing I've posted (as another username): Fret Killr. I still listen to his stuff all the time. Kind of wish I'd written a better post though. Anyway, here's Mr Tambourine Man, and Let It Snow.... [more]

Scrump Goes For Broke
I will also note that I've seen some simply outstanding troll-ignoring here lately
I recently suggested (but didn't explain very well) the idea of an "ignore this" button by each post that would change to "you are ignoring this comment" once clicked - and have no other effect at all - in other words it would be completely private and provide no feedback to the troll or anyone else but the troll-ignorer would... Mefi Made Me See The Light!
The sexism thread was probably the biggest eye-opener I have ever had here. I had long assumed that a man actively challenging sexist comments would be overwhelmingly seen as a condescending, sanctimonious douchebag by women and men alike so it was a big surprise to see so many female members saying that they actively appreciate it when men do their share of policing.
More trivially, I also remember a discussion which started out along the lines of "Isn't it... [more]

Non-foxy Mefite delight?
Anyone tried the Ruby-based scriptable proxy MouseHole? MonkeyGrease also sounds like it might have been interesting, but the site is unavailable right now - not a good sign.

I can haz marketshare?
YES. I am incorporating the phrase "I'm salty" into everyday conversation starting now. HERE I COME, WORLD!
I'd never even heard of this expression before. Apparently, there's also "jump salty" meaning "to unexpectedly become enraged", which is equally awesome.

[more than you wanted to know inside]
I'm sure this post was well-intentioned but with very few exceptions a man making more than a passing reference to female bodily functions in a public forum is going to come over as a bit creepy. It's best avoided.

To tomcooke, certainly. No one else. I think some people are wrong, not inferior. Except perhaps men who get squicked out at discussions, or even references to, the details of female anatomy. They are at least annoyingly childish, in my opinion.
Did I give the impression that I'm among the squicked out? All I meant to say is that it's very difficult for men to comment on these matters without appearing boorish or unctuous ("creepy") and... [more]

Question about deals: Bad deletion
poorly-worded questions draw in bad/misguided answers
Questions like this also encourage further chatty questions. In this sense, being more aggressive about deleting things can actually lead to less deletions overall because you don't get the effect of a lot of new users going "Oh, cool! I have a fun question too!"

More Inside? You bet.
I thought the reason for not doing this on the blue was that we didn't want to do anything that might encourage more GYOBFW essay-length posts. Has that thinking changed?
The way I would like to see this work is that all posts are expected to have a presentation of one or two good links in the front page part - which would have a sensible character limit, and probably a limit on the number of links as well. This could then optionally be followed by... [more]

Oh, and thanks, I'm happy to see this feature. I also suggest that if a character limit is going to be added for the front page part then line breaks in that text should be disallowed at the same time.

It just seems wrong somehow.
It's all the extra reference-type links that make it look like an essay written by the poster. I'm not a fan of these additional links anyway, but this seems like a new reason to avoid adding them.
